Task 1
STARBUCKS IN CHINA
You are going to listen to a news item about a legal battle between Starbucks, a global
coffee company and Xingbaku, a Chinese coffee company.
The global coffee shop chain Starbucks has won its legal battle in China to stop a local
chain from violating its copyright. A Shanghai court ordered the Xingbaku Coffee Co. Ltd.
to stop engaging in “illegitimate competition”. The name "Xingbaku" roughly translates
into “Starbucks” in English – “xing” means star and “baku” sounds like “bucks”. Presiding
judge Lu Guogiang ruled that the name “Starbucks” and its logo were unique trademarks
and were entitled to special protection under Chinese law. He ordered Xingbaku to
change its name and to pay compensation of US$62,500 to the US company.
Starbucks is the world’s largest coffee retailer. It entered the Chinese market in 1999 and
now has over 300 outlets on the Chinese mainland. Xingbaku registered its company name
in China in November 1999 - after Starbucks had registered its trademark. Xingbaku began
setting up its own coffee shops in 2003, stealing the Starbucks name, logo and image.
Starbucks first sued the Chinese company in December 2003 for violating its intellectual
property rights. China had introduced copyright laws in 2001 to protect international
companies and their trademarks. Starbucks is the first international company to test China’s
trademark laws. Chinese lawyers see the court’s decision in Starbucks’ favor as an
important one. It may start a clean-up of the widespread stealing of foreign brands in China.

Task 2
A SUCCESSFUL “AMATEUR”
Interviewer: Theo, you have set up a number of successful Internet-based businesses over
the last five years. You began working from your university dorm?
Theo: Yeah...I was just messing about really, at first.
Interviewer: It was for fun?
Theo: Sure, yeah, exactly. I didn’t know five years ago that I’d be here today. The thought
never crossed my mind.
Interviewer: Would you still describe yourself as an amateur?
Theo: Not in the negative sense, obviously, but in the sense that I love what I do, then, yeah.
Interviewer: But you do make money?
Theo: I can’t complain!
Interviewer: Why do you think it’s the Internet that has created so many successful
amateurs?
Theo: Well, first of all, I’m not sure I agree with you that it has created all the successful
amateurs...I mean, there are lots of other examples of people who love what they do and
make money out of it. I’m thinking of someone like Michael Eavis, for example – the guy
who runs the Glastonbury festival. I don’t know how much money he makes from what he
does, but that’s not the important thing - most of the year he’s a farmer, but each year he
runs this enormous music festival on the site of his farm. Actually, he doesn’t even do it
every year, sometimes he just thinks “No, can’t be bothered this year.” (Laughs) You know, I
think that’s genius. Love that attitude. He’s only one example, but there are lots of others –
people who run record labels, or have restaurants, or make cheese! (laughs).
Interviewer: Do you think it’s important to love what you do?
Theo: Yeah, absolutely. There has to be passion for the product.
Interviewer: So it’s the product that’s important?
Theo: Again yeah – get the product right and everything else is simple. The marketing will
look after itself. This is why the net has produced so many successful amateurs – the
marketing is done by “word of mouth” so to speak, people just tell each other about a site
that’s cool, especially through networking sites like MySpace and Facebook.
Interviewer: Marketing isn’t important?
Theo: Well, of course it is, I’m sure there are marketing amateurs out there too – people who
love what they do!
But I firmly believe that you can’t market a poor product. That’s essential.
Interviewer: Your father was a successful businessman too, and you studied at Cambridge.
Does having such a background help?
Theo: I’m from a wealthy family, yeah, I’ve never denied it. That helps, obviously. It’s given
me time, time above all is the most important thing, time to experiment and make mistakes
and not have to worry too much.
Interviewer: Thanks.

Task 3
Behold, the shopping cart. But where did it come from? Meet Sylvan Goldman, born in 1898.
As a grocer in Oklahoma, Sylvan Goldman had a hunch that he was losing business, but
how? Turns out the customers bought only as much as they could carry. Once the wire
frame basket used to haul groceries was full, most customers just called it a day. Goldman
knew that if his customers could carry more, they’d also buy more. Inspired by a folding
chair, Goldman invented the world’s first shopping cart in 1937. He called this contraption a
folding basket carrier because it held two baskets on a wheeled assembly, and folded up for
storage.
However, the public didn’t readily take to this invention, so Goldman, in a move that may
have been even more ingenious than the invention itself, hired fake shoppers to walk
around using the carts. The publicity paid off, and by 1940, Goldman’s patented basket
carrier was a popular item in grocery stores from coast to coast.
So, how ingenious is this inventor? On the American Dream scale, he gets a five. Goldman
took a relatively simple idea and used it to make millions. On the benefit to humanity scale,
he gets a three. People are able to buy more things, and they’re also likely to buy more than
they need. On the ripple effect scale, he gets a two. Shopping carts haven’t really inspired
any other fabulous inventions.
