A Different Type of Holiday

‘Ecotourism’ describes a holiday that aims to preserve and protect the natural environment. Its purpose is
to educate the traveller about the environment and the culture of the local community. This type of
holiday wasn’t popular in the past, as it was very expensive. However, in recent years, with low-cost
airlines and cheap accommodation, more people can afford this type of travel. In addition, awareness of
environmental issues has increased and travellers want to get close to nature.

Luxury in the rainforest

An example of ecotourism is in Infierno in Peru. The place got its name because hundreds of years ago, the

g.
journey there was very difficult and dangerous. Now, boats carry tourists along the river to comfortable

in
places to stay called eco-lodges. These lodges are in the middle of thick rainforests where visitors can

py
explore and learn more about the amazing rainforest wildlife in its natural habitat.

co
An African adventure

to
The African country of Botswana has many options for the adventurous traveller. The Okavango Delta is an

ho
ideal location to see exotic wildlife. The region has some of the biggest elephant herds in Africa and offers
a rare opportunity to see these animals close up. Travellers can stay in eco-lodges and go on spectacular

rp
safari trips during the day. They get the opportunity to meet the local people and learn more about their

no
culture. tio
Working in ecotourism

tri

area is covered by rainforests, mountains and rivers. Today, many people work as tour guides for tourists
dis

who are interested in learning about their culture and their environment. Ecotourism has helped to
develop and protect this community.
