Answer these questions briefly.

1. Explain briefly the Dramatic Farce

Literary theorist and critic Eric Bentley described farce as 'practical-joking turned
theatrical'. Farce is a genre that we are all familiar with, though we may not always be aware
of it. Farce is a common style that pervades the boundaries of art formats. Let's say the comic
movie that takes its comic bits to the limits of physical comedy can be characterised as a
farce. Yet, the term farce is most commonly associated with theatre.

The key difference between farce and other comic styles like satire and dark or black comedy
is that farce usually lacks the sharp critique and commentary the other formats are famous for.
Black comedy uses humour to present heavy and serious themes in a humorous
manner. Satire uses humour to point out social drawbacks or flaws in people.

Farce is a comic theatrical work that presents unlikely circumstances, stereotypical characters,
and taboo subjects, along with violence and buffoonery in performance. The term also stands
for the category of dramatic works written or performed in this style.

The chief purpose of a farce is to create laughter and entertain the audience. Playwrights use
different techniques of comedy and performance to achieve this, often using fast-paced and
humorous physical movement, dilemmas, harmless violence, lies, and deception.

2. What do you know about Epic Theatre in drama? Explain briefly.

Epic theatre was a theatrical movement that consisted of new political dramas and
was inspired by the social climate of the time.
It is important because it sought to do what other theatrical movements did it. It
exposed its workings and ensured the audience was aware they were watching a
production at all times. They also focused on social issues and political policies.
The features of epic theatre include the use of poor or ironic acting, moving sets,
actors playing multiple characters, the actors interacting with the audience, and the
direct address of social issues.

3. Explain the difference between Theatre of the Absurd and other types of theatre.

The Theatre of the Absurd is a post–World War II designation for particular plays of absurdist
fiction written by a number of primarily European playwrights in the late 1950s. It is also a
term for the style of theatre the plays represent. The plays focus largely on ideas
of existentialism and express what happens when human existence lacks meaning or purpose
and communication breaks down. The structure of the plays is typically a round shape, with
the finishing point the same as the starting point. Logical construction and argument give way
to irrational and illogical speech and to the ultimate conclusion—silence.
Absurd plays generally do not have a plot and characters in the way that conventional drama
has. They do not stage a story that starts, develops and resolves as in the conventional plays.

4. Explain briefly the following elements in drama,

a. the plot : A plot is a sequence of events within a play that tells a story. Essentially, a plot is
what makes a story. Five components make up a plot: exposition, rising action, climax, falling
action, and resolution--conflict and theme help drive the plot forward.

b. the character and characterization : Characterization is the representation of the traits,

motives, and psychology of a character in a narrative. Characterization may occur through
direct description, in which the character's qualities are described by a narrator, another
character, or by the character him or herself.

c. the theme : A theme is a recurring idea that's present throughout the work. Which themes
are present in your script – love, loss, hope, injustice? What is it about on a wider level than
the story itself? Perhaps there's an idea here that you can take away from the script to explore
in more depth.

d. the point of view : point of view refers to who narrates a story and how much that narrator
knows. In a story told from the first-person point of view, the writer chooses to have a
character within the story narrate it, using the first-person pronouns I and me.
