EXPERIMENT NO: 2

SPECIFIC GRAVITY TEST

OBJECTIVE: TO DETERMINE THE SPECIFIC GRAVITY

OF SOIL BY pycnometer METHOD.

APPARATUS REQUIRED:
1. Drying oven
2. Balance
3. Moisture can
4. Gloves
5. Spatula.

THEORY:
A pyclinometer or constant volume method has found to be the most
reliable method for determining the specific gravity of the soil.
PROCEDURE:
1. Take a clean container (pan) and find its weight using a balance.
2. Take nearly 100 gm of wet samples (whose water content has to be find out) in
the pan and take the weight of the pan along with the sample.
3. Keep the soil with pan in oven for overnight maintaining temperature about 104
Degree Celsius.
4. After drying, cool the pan and find the weight of pan and dry soil collectively.
