Nutrients

= are essential for the growth and survival of living organisms

Nitrogen and phosphorus = extremely important in aquatic ecosystem
Other elements
a. Iron
b. Magnesium
c. Copper
Nutrients are found in different forms
1. Organic and inorganic particulates
2. Dissolved organic and dissolved inorganic particulates
Phosphorus = is released from minerals during weathering events

Artificial sources of nutrients

1. Sewage
2. Agricultural fertilizers
3. Animal wastes
Elevated concentration of nutrients can
= limit primary productivity
= enhance algae growth
these lead to eutrophication
Eutrophication = is a natural process occurring in freshwater ecosystems
= can also be human induced artificial
= as algae or plants excessively grow, less sunlight is penetrated through the
water and this prevent photosynthesis and produce toxins
As plants and algae die and decay
= decrease in DO concentrations and can affect the diversity of aquatic
organisms and reduce human use of water

Metals
Copper
Manganese
Zinc
= important to maintain life but in high concentration, these can become toxic ingested
by humans and animals or humans that consume animals expose to high
concentrations

Weathering of rocks
Soil erosion
Sedimentation
= introduce metals into aquatic ecosystems
Wastewater treatments
Industrial wastes
Sewage
Contaminated soils
Mining operations

Metals accumulate in fish and passed unto humans during consumption

Mercury causes major risks to human health

Effects of mercury on health

= death
= suffer convulsions
= paralysis
= regnant women gave birth to poisoned babies with deformities
