How to match a slope field with a differential equation

wIn multiple-choice problems, it is not practical to solve the given differential equation to
match it with a slope field because of time concerns. Also, the differential equation in
question may not be separable, making algebraic solution impossible.

It makes more sense to use following questions and process of elimination when matching
slope fields with differential equations.

1. If dy/dx is a function of x only parallel slopes within the same column.

2. If dy/dx is a function of y only parallel slopes within the same row.
3. What condition will make d y/dx = 0? Horizontal tangents.
4. What condition will make d y/dx nonexistent Vertical tangents.
5. What is the sign of d y/dx in each quadrant?
6. What happens to dy/dx when x is 0? (on the y- axis) and when y is 0? (on the x -axis)
7. When x and y are equal to each other d y/dx =1. When x and y
  are opposites of each
other d y/dx = -1.
8. What happens to dy/dx when x gets very large and/or when y gets very large?

Example: 2003 BC #14

In this example, the first four questions are not helping to select the correct answer, but the
fifth question does. We need to analyze the sign of dy/dx in each quadrant. (Answer: E)
