steel (Sut = 750 N/mm2). The service factor and the factor of safety are 1.5 and 2
respectively. The gears are finished to meet the accuracy of Grade 4.
i. In the initial stages of gear design, assume that the velocity factor accounts for the
dynamic load and that the face width is ten times the normal module. Assuming
thepitch line velocity to be 10 m/s, estimate the normal module.

4. a) Calculate the design compressive load for a stanchion 350 @ 710.2 N/m (72.4 kg/m), 7M
3.5 m high. The column is restrained in direction and position at both the ends. It is to
be used an uncased column in a single-storey building. Use steel of grade Fe410.
b) Design a column to support a factored load of 1050 kN. The column has an effective 7M
length of 7.0 m with respect to z axis and 5.0 m with respect to y axis. Use steel of grade
Fe 410.

following factored forces. Maximum moment, Mz = 5000 kNm, Maximum shear force =
900 kN, The girder is laterally restrained. Use steel of grade Fe 410 and assume yield
stress of steel to be 250 MPa irrespective of thickness of plates. Connections need not
be designed. Avoid intermediate and bearing stiffener.
