3. (a) The profits of a company are to be shared between two business partners, Jim and
Dorothy, in the ratio 2:3.

(i) What is Jim’s share as a fraction of Dorothy’s share? 1 Mark


(ii) What is Jim’s share as a percentage of the total profit? 2 Marks
(iii) If Dorothy is to receive K460,000, calculate Jim’s share of the profit
(give the answer to the nearest Kwacha). 3 Marks

(b) Define mutually exclusive events. 1 Mark

(c) A, B and C are three events such that P(A) = 7⁄9, P(B) = 2⁄3 and P(C) = 1⁄5 .

Required:

5. (a) What annual rate of compound interest would be necessary for K250,000 to grow

6. (a) An insurance company charges a premium of 3% of the value of the car for full
cover. If a car is involved in an accident, the owner will pay the first K100,000
of the repair cost. Otherwise, the insurance company will pay the market value
for a write-off. For a car costing K6,000,000, calculate:

(i) The annual premium 2 Marks

(ii) How much the insurance company will pay if the car is involved in an
accident and it is written off. 1 Mark

(iii) How much the insurance company will pay if a garage charged K520,000
for accident repairs. 2 Marks

(b) Define office automation system. 2 Marks

(c) Outline any five advantages of office automation system. 5 Marks

(d) Differentiate the following:

(i) Low level and high level programming languages. 4 Marks


(ii) System unit and peripheral devices as the main categories of computer
