The Rocking Horse Winner Selfish Quotes
Trapped In D.H. Lawrence s The Rocking Horse Winner, Paul is a young boy at a very
impressionable age, whom desperately wants his mother s love and attention. He is
observing and learning about life from his environment and the people who occupy it.
Paul s mother, Hester, because of her own selfish desires, unknowingly contributes to her
son s acquirement of unhealthy behaviors. Paul believes, to his mothers blame, that luck
brings money and money brings happiness. Hester s internal selfishness, dissatisfaction
and beliefs seem to lead Paul to his ultimate demise. First, Hester s selfishness is
portrayed in her character through her innermost feelings for her children. According to
the narrator, [Hester] felt they had been thrust upon her, and she could not love them
(484). A typical mother s love is unconditional and is expressed through nurturing,
protection, guidance and affirmation; this helps children grow and develop into healthy
minded adults. Instead, Hester is so consumed with herself and the image she maintains;
that, even though she does not say it out loud, it becomes quite obvious to her children
that she does not love them and they [can] read it in each other s eyes (485). This selfish
personality in Hester creates a strong desire in Paul s undeveloped mind to begin
searching for something that he can do... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The narrator describes the discontentment sensed by the whole family and that there was
always the grinding sense of the shortage of money... (485). The narrator implies that
Hester blames her husband, but secretly she racked her brains, and tried this thing and
the other, but could not find anything successful [herself] (485). Hester s unhappiness
troubles her son deeply. Consequently, Paul, being young and immature, feels he must be
the one to help satisfy his mother s discontentment (Kaplan
Themes In In The Time Of The Butterflies
During the 1930s 1960s in the Dominican Republic there was a dictatorship going on
by Rafael Trujillo. Trujillo ran the Dominican Republic as his own personal
possession. He and his friends held nearly 60 percent of the country s resources. If
things didn t go Trujillo s way then that person who broke the law would be either
prisoned or vanished. In her book, In the Time of the Butterflies , Julia Alvarez explores
many different themes, such as Family, Courage, and Freedom. Each of the Mirabal
sistershad different personalities. Patria the oldest sister was the most religious. Dedé
the second eldest was the only sister who survived. Minerva the third Mirabal sister
was the one who was more wrapped up in the revolution. Maria Teresa the youngest of
the sisters just wanted to be like her oldest sisters. The butterfly is a symbol for the main
characters, the Mirabal sisters. Butterflies are unique, they represent freedom, and they
have a very short life span. The Mirabal sisters, much like the butterflies were unique,
and died young. They had to sacrifice their lives in order to be free like butterflies.
In the book, there are many different themes, but one of the main themes is Family. I
don t know who talked Papá into sending us away to school. (Alvarez 11) Minerva was
talking about how her father let her and her sisters go to school she said this he didn t
want them leaving the house alone because he knows how the people in the dominican
republic are. Two of
How The Utilities Industry Changed The Us And Gis Essay
12/12/2016
Utilities in the US and GIS
GIS is critical to the utilities industry in the US. It allows them to perform mundane
tasks that they are required to perform with new levels of ROI (return on investment),
safety, and man hour efficiency. It also allows them to save the taxpayer a substantial
sum of money yearly, and also the ability to remain profitable while billing for less. In
this paper, I will first discuss some of the basic ways that the utilities industry in the US
is using GIS to achieving all of these things, then into each part of the electrical utilities
industry and then delve into some of the more technical items used by the industry and
their function within the industry as a whole. Geography, as defined in the Cambridge
dictionary is the study of features and systems of the earth s surface, including continents,
mountains, seas, weather, and plant life, and of the ways in which countries and people
organize life within an area. (3) Therefore, I think it is important to define the history of
electricity to give perspective, and its physical properties on a smaller scale to help
understand larger concepts from a power engineering perspective. Unfortunately, there is
a lot of relevant information to cover before GIS is brought into fruition.
Electricity had always been in a rather elementary and simple form of static electricity,
until people discovered we could harness its properties to conduct work, light spaces and
various other uses.

Jesus and the Trinity The Holy Trinity is composed of the Father, the Son, and the
Holy Spirit. These three entities create the overall being of God. In this Jesus plays the
role of the Son, but that does not mean he is not also God. Jesus is sent to walk among
humankind with the body and life of a simple carpenter s son, but also to be the physical
embodiment of the divine Son. According to Zahniser, it is necessary for Jesus to walk
on earth because as the communicator he must become one with those he wishes to
communicate with (Zahniser, 1989). For the communication to be
The Human Right Of Literacy Essay
In 2015, UNESCO Institute for Statistics reported that there are 774 million illiterate
adults and 123 million illiterate children in the world today. Two thirds of all illiterate
adults and children are female. Why is this an issue? As the world s technologies and
innovations have advanced, the ability to read and write has become a means of
survival. Today, 135 countries around the world provide a non discriminating education
for all. In the developing world, literacyis now recognized as a human right. When a
person is denied that right, injustice is manifested. The millions of illiterate adults and
children living in our world today are not only being denied educational opportunities,
they are being denied the basic human right of literacy. Nine out of the top ten illiterate
countries in the world are in Africa. Burkina Faso, in West Sub Sahara, is the single
most illiterate country in the world. Unfortunately, little to no changes in literacy rates
have occurred for the past several decades in Burkina Faso, or in the many African
countries with high illiteracy rates. Without the ability to read and write, people become
trapped in a cycle of poverty, inequality and unstable and poorly paid jobs. Without the
ability to read and write, women and children lose their voice in a male dominated,
corrupt government, conservative culture. Without the ability to read and right, a greater
division is made between developing and under developing countries. Without the ability
