The Big Sleep Heroism
The idea of heroism is a common motif in Noir literature; one that dominates the
characterization of the traditional hard boiled detective. This remains constant in
Raymond Chandler s novel, The Big Sleep, in which Philip Marlowe is hired to
investigate the blackmail of a rich man with two troublesome, fun loving daughters. As
Marlowe gains more information throughout the course of his investigation, he becomes
closer with the daughters, Vivian and Carmen Sternwood, and learns many dirty secrets
about the family and people close to them. This becomes as much of an exploration of
the exploitation of General Sternwood, as much as it is an exploration of Marlowe
himself and his role in life. Throughout the course of the novel, Marlowe s attempts...

This viewpoint of Marlowe as the knight in the window is so strong due to easily
recognizable comparisons drawn between the two scenes. However it is the
differences in the scenes that highlight his shortcomings. Because Carmen is under the
influence of drugs and there is a dead body lying nearby, this situation is not ideal, to
say the least. Marlowe acts accordingly through decisions about what to do with
Carmen, because his decisions are also not ideal for a hero. He decided to pass up her
underclothes, not from feelings of delicacy, but because [he] couldn t see [him]self
putting her pants on and snapping her brassiere (Chandler 37). This instance alone,
that Marlowe decides not to properly dress Carmen, not due to maintaining boundaries
or intimate feelings, but because he, as a man, cannot see himself doing that, is a
perfect example as to why can never be the perfect hero. A traditional hero would set
aside all concerns about how comfortable he feels, and simply do it in as professional
of a manner as he can. Marlowe s decision to disregard her undergarments for
superficial reasons do not meet the knights; chivalric standards. His expectations of
himself as a hero do not live up to the realities because of how he decides to care for and
control Carmen. To get Carmen to cooperate, he slapped her face. She blinked

Avoid Sensory Overload Advantages And Disadvantages
Games like Avoid Sensory Overload are pretty popular on mobile devices due to their
easy controls and addictive nature, but lately they have been making the jump to PC as
well. With titles like Race The Sun, T.E.C 3001 and Rage Runner, PC owners have been
spoiled for choice when it comes to these types of endless runners. Avoid Sensory

definitely want to check out.

cannot stop or slow down, but every few meters its speed increases, which make things a
bit challenging. Obstacles come in stationary and moving varieties along with other
challenges such as holes in the path and narrow sections where you can fall off.

levels each, ranging from easy to extreme. Each difficulty level has 8 levels and the

I quite like the style of the graphics as it looks good without being so over the top that
it is hard to see what is going on. The draw distance is also very generous, so it is easy
to spot upcoming obstacles and adjust your path accordingly. The three themes,
Electronic, Laserdance and Synthrock each feature its own soundtrack and some of the
tunes are rather catchy. The music really suits the game and sounds great with a decent
pair of headphones as it really draws you into the game. Some more tracks would have
been nice, but the developers have promised that there is a free theme coming which is
very generous considering the already low price tag of the game. The sound effects don t

The Reign Of The Byzantine Empire
Throughout the reign of the Byzantine Empire, sculpting and architecture were the
pinnacle of ancient Byzantine art; leaving a vast collection of masterpieces for later
cultures to admire, and even adopt their majestic styles and techniques. A focal period
during the lifespan of the Byzantine Empire was the reign of Justinian the Great (527
565 A.D.), which is also referred to as the Golden Age. It is during this time that
architecture and sculpture begin to flourish, along with other mediums of art such as
mosaics, murals, and illuminative manuscripts. Very many religious works of art were
created during this time as well, however very few survived the onset of the iconoclast
uproar in 726.
One work of art that managed to remain unharmed by Islamic efforts to destroy religious
images is Archangel Michael, an ivory diptych from the early sixth century. The artist of
this sculpture is unknown; however it is presumed that it was created in the court
workshop in Constantinople. Artists were usually servants to the court and created many
pieces of art including byzantine crosses, and illuminative manuscripts. The diptych
consists of two carved panels, usually made of wood or ivory, that are hinged together in
efforts to create a book like appearance. With roots stemming back to the ancient Roman
Empire, the diptych was used as a political as well as an informative device. Upon being
elected to the post of consul, Roman politicians would send these carvings to very close
