A globally recognized research university located in Hoboken, New Jersey, the Stevens Institute of Technology has earned a reputation for its outstanding academic programs in technology management, science, and engineering. For more than 140 years, Stevens has educated some of the most accomplished figures in a variety of fields, including Nobel Prize winner Frederick Reines. Through its numerous world-class research centers and institutes, Stevens dedicates itself to a wide range of research initiatives. Here is a brief glance at some of the most noteworthy research centers on the Stevens campus, all of which qualify as National Research Centers of Excellence. Atlantic Center for the Innovative Design and Control of Small Ships Although the shipbuilding industry has undergone a number of radical changes in recent decades, few researchers have focused on the problem of integrating the numerous engineering disciplines associated with the shipbuilding process. To maximize performance and affordability in U.S. Navy ship design over the next few years, particularly among small ships designed for the littoral zone, the Atlantic Center for the Innovative Design and Control of Small Ships conducts a large quantity of targeted research. In addition to creating an environment of integrated engineering disciplines in the areas of ship automation and hull design, the Center also sets out to recruit the most promising young engineering talent for careers in naval ship design. Department of Defense Systems Engineering Research Center In 2008, the Stevens Institute of Technology received a contract to house a Systems Engineering Research Center (SERC) for the U.S. Department of Defense. At SERC, researchers set out to improve the quality of systems engineering for the Department of Defense and ensure the integration and sustainability of complex defense systems. SERC addresses four primary challenges facing the intelligence community: quick and flexible

response, operating and evolving large complex systems, improving the quantity and quality of systems engineers, and addressing security issues in a systemic fashion. National Center for Secure and Resilient Maritime Commerce At the National Center for Secure and Resilient Maritime Commerce (CSR), researchers attempt to protect people and properties on U.S. islands and improve maritime domain awareness. Situated opposite Manhattan on the bank of the Hudson River, CSR possesses an ideal location and resource set for continuing research in fields such as security, resilience, and port operations.
