Gurgaon to Gurugram
● In 2016, Gurgaon was renamed as Gurugram, which is the corporate hub of Haryana on the outskirts of Delhi.
● Legend has it that Gurgaon derived its name from Guru Dronacharya, the master of archery in Mahabharata who
groomed the Pandavas and Kauravas in military tactics.
● It is said the village was given as ‘gurudakshina’ to him by the Pandavas and hence it came to be known as
Guru-gram, which in course of time got distorted to Gurgaon.
Bangalore to Bengaluru
● A war was fought in 890 CE, according to a Western Ganga dynasty inscription found in Begur.
● The city was a part of the Ganga Kingdom until the year 1004 when it was named as ‘Bengaval-uru’, also referred to
as the ‘City of Guards’ in Old Kannada. The name change took place in 2006.
Bombay to Mumbai
● Some of the oldest names for the city date back to the 16th and 17th centuries when it was referred to as Mombayn
(1525), Bombaym (1552), Bombain (1552), Bombay (1538), Boon Bay (1690), Bombaim (Portugese 1666) etc.
● During the British rule in the 17th century, they changed the Portugese name to an anglicised Bombay.
● The financial capital of India, the name Bombay was changed to Mumbai in 1996. It derives its name from the term
Mumba or Maha-Amba, the patron goddess.
Calcutta to Kolkata
● The city, ubiquitous for its ‘adda’ (casual gathering of people engaging in friendly banter), adopted it’s Bengali name
Kolkata officially in 2001.
● The name is derived from the Bengali term ‘Kolikata’ which was the name of one of the three villages predating the
British rule in India. The other two villages were Gobindapur and Sutanati.
Pondicherry to Puducherry
● It is lovingly referred to as ‘Pondi’, the pleasantly old-world city of Pondicherry changed to Puducherry in 2006.
Waltair to Visakhapatnam
● Visakhapatnam's (Vizag) history can be traced back to the 6th century BC. It was historically a part of the Kalinga
region and then eventually ruled by the Vengi kingdom, Pallava and Ganga dynasty.
● It is the largest city of Andhra Pradesh both in terms of area and population. It went from being called Waltair during
British rule to Vizagpatnam after independence and later became Visakhapatnam in 1987.
Gauhati to Guwahati
● In ancient texts, Guwahati is referred to as the city of Pragyjyotishpura. The name Guwahati is derived from the word
‘Guwa’ which means ‘areca nut’ and ‘haat’ (market). The city changed its anglicised name to Guwahati in 1983.
Benaras to Varanasi
● Varanasi is traditionally known as the culture centre of north India for thousands of years.
● Known for its various ghats and embankments where ritual cleansing takes place everyday, the city is also a global
pilgrimage center. It derives its name from two rivers: Varuna and Assi.
Trichur to Thrissur
● The name Thrissur is the short form of Thiru-shiva-per-ur, which means ‘The City’ with the name of Lord Shiva’.
● It was one of the places where the Indian freedom movement gathered momentum after a committee was formed in
1919 of the Indian National Congress (INC).
● First sites of human settlement during the stone age have also been discovered here. The anglicised Trichur was
changed to Thrissur in 2014.
Baroda to Vadodara
● According to history, Vadodara was inhabited by early trade settlers who settled in the region around 812 AD.
● The province was primarily dominated by Hindu kings who ruled until 1297. The name Vadodara traces its origins
from a term called ‘Vatpatrak’ or banyan tree leaf. The name change from Baroda took place in 1974.
Hubali to Hubbali
● Old Hubli, also known as Rayas Hubli, grew as a commercial centre under the rule of Vijayanagar empire in 1336 AD.
Back then it was famous for cotton, saltpetre and iron trade. In Kannada, Hubli means a ‘flowering creeper’.
● The name was changed from Hubli to Hubbali in 2014. 17.
Mysore to Mysuru
● Mysore is derived from the word ‘mahishuru’. The term means ‘Buffalo’ in Sanskrit and ‘Mahishasur’ (demon) in
Kannada, who could shape-shift into a buffalo as well as humans.
● The place is well known for the sweet dish Mysore Pak and silk sarees. According to Hindu mythology, the area was
ruled by Mahishasur until Goddess Chamundeshwari killed him. The name change came about in 2014.
Mangalore to Mangaluru
● Mangalore is known by four different names in four different languages: Kudla in Tulu, Maikala in Beary, Mangaluru
in Kannada, and Kodial in Canarese Konkani. It is named after the deity Mangaldevi.
Bellary to Ballari
● Bellary changed its name to Ballari in 2014. There are several accounts on the origin of its name.
● One legend says when a few worshippers travelling to Ballari couldn’t find a Shiva Linga to worship, they installed a
Balla (measuring cup) upside down as Shiva Linga and worshipped it.
● The other legend derives its name from the old Kannada word Vallari.
Panjim to Panaji
● Goa's capital, Panaji officially detached itself from its Portuguese name Panjim in the 1960s.

● 2016 म, गुड़गां व का नाम गु ाम रखा गया, जो िद ी के बाहरी इलाके म ह रयाणा का कॉप रे ट हब है ।
● िकंवदं ती है िक गुड़गां व का नाम महाभारत म धनुिव ा के गु गु ोणाचाय से िलया गया था, िज ोंने पां डवों और कौरवों को सै
रणनीित म तैयार िकया था।
● यह कहा जाता है िक पां डवों ारा उ इस गाँ व को 'गु दि णा' के प म िदया गया था और इसिलए इसे गु - ाम के पम
जाना जाने लगा, जो समय के साथ गुड़गां व म िवकृत हो गया।
बगलोर से बगलु
● बेगुर म पाए गए एक पि मी गंगा राजवंश िशलालेख के अनुसार, एक यु 890 सीई म लड़ा गया था। यह शहर 1004 तक गंगा
सा ा का एक िह ा था जब इसे 'बगावल-ओ ’नाम िदया गया था, िजसे पुराने क ड़ म 'िसटी ऑफ़ गाड् स’ भी कहा जाता था।

बॉ े से मुंबई
● शहर के िलए सबसे पुराने नामों म से कुछ 16 वीं और 17 वीं शता ी के ह, जब इसे मो ा न (1525), बॉ ेम (1552), बॉ ाइन
(1552), बॉ े (1538), बून बे (1690), बॉ े ( पोटु गीज 1666) आिद कहा जाता था।
● 17 वीं शता ी म ि िटश शासन के दौरान, उ ोंने पोटु गीज नाम बदलकर बॉ े कर िदया। भारत की िव ीय राजधानी, बॉ े नाम
को 1996 म मुंबई म बदल िदया गया था। इसका नाम मुंबा या महा-अ ा, संर क दे वी से िलया गया है ।

● 1991 तक शहर को ि व म के नाम से जाना जाता था, जब सरकार ने इसे अपने मूल नाम ित वनंतपुरम म बदलने का फैसला
िकया। मलयालम म इसका उ ारण 'िथ -अनंथा-पुरम ’के प म आ, िजसका अथ है भगवान अनंत का शहर। यह पारं प रक
परं पराओं वाले सबसे पुराने शहरों म से एक है और 1000 ई.पू. पुराना है ।
कलक ा से कोलकाता
● शहर, जो अपने 'अ ा' के िलए सव ापी (मै ीपूण बातचीत करने वाले लोगों का आक क जमावड़ा) िव ात है , ने इसे 2001 म
आिधका रक तौर पर कोलकाता के बंगाली नाम से अपनाया।
● यह नाम बंगाली श 'कोिलकाता' से िलया गया है , जो भारत म ि िटश शासन से पहले के तीन गां वों म से एक था। अ दो गाँ व
गोिबंदपुर और सुतनती थे।
कोचीन से को (केरल)
● 14 वीं शता ी म, को मसालों म वसाय करने वाला एक मह पूण ापा रक क था।
● इसे अरब सागर की रानी के प म भी जाना जाता था। को नाम की उ ि किथत तौर पर मलयालम श 'कोचु अज़ी' से ई
है , िजसका अथ है 'छोटा लैगून'।
● 1996 म इसे एक अिधक पारं प रक नाम को िदया गया ।
पांिडचेरी से पुदुचेरी
● िजसे ार से 'पोंडी' कहा जाता है , पां िडचेरी का सुखद ाचीन शहर 2006 म पुदुचेरी म बदल गया।

● िवशाखाप नम (िवजाग) के इितहास की जड़ छठी शता ी ईसा पूव म दे खी जा सकती है । यह ऐितहािसक प से किलंग े का
एक िह ा था और िफर अंततः वगी सा ा , प व और गंगा राजवंश ारा शािसत िकया गया। े फल और जनसं ा दोनों के
िहसाब से यह आं दे श का सबसे बड़ा शहर है । यह तं ता के बाद ि िटश शासन के दौरान वा े यर से िवजागपटनम कहे
जाने लगा और बाद म 1987 म िवशाखाप नम बन गया।
गुआहाटी से गुवाहाटी ाचीन ंथों म, गुवाहाटी को ाग ोितषपुरा शहर के प म जाना जाता है । गुवाहाटी नाम 'गुवा ’श से िलया
गया है िजसका अथ है 'अरे का नट’ और 'हाट’ (बाजार)। इस शहर ने 1983 म अपना नाम बदलकर गुवाहाटी कर िदया।
बनारस से वाराणसी
● वाराणसी को पारं प रक प से हजारों वष से उ र भारत के सं ृ ित क के प म जाना जाता है । अपने िविभ घाटों और
तटबंधों के िलए जाना जाता है , जहां रोज़ाना धािमक ि याएं होती है , यह शहर एक वैि क तीथ थल भी है । इसका नाम दो निदयों से
िलया गया है : व णा और अ ी
ि चूर से ि शूर
● ि शूर नाम ित -िशवा-पेर-उर का संि प है , िजसका अथ है ‘भगवान िशव के मंिदरों वाला शहर’। यह भारतीय रा ीय कां ेस
(आईएनसी) के 1919 म एक सिमित के गठन के बाद भारतीय तं ता आं दोलन की गित बढ़ाने वाली जगहों म से एक था। पाषाण
युग के दौरान मानव ब ी के पहले थलों को भी यहां खोजा गया है । 2014 म ि चूर को ि शूर म बदल िदया गया था।
बड़ौदा से वडोदरा
● इितहास म, वड़ोदरा म शु आती ापार बसने वालों का िनवास था, जो 812 ई ी के आसपास इस े म बस गए थे। ां त म मु
प से िहं दू राजाओं का वच था, िज ोंने 1297 तक शासन िकया था। वड़ोदरा नाम की उ ि 'वाटपा क' या बरगद के पेड़ के
प े से ई है । 1974 म, बड़ौदा से नाम प रवतन आ।
बली से ली
● पुराना बली, िजसे रायस बली भी कहा जाता है , 1336 ई ी म िवजयनगर सा ा के शासन के तहत एक वािण क क के
प म िवकिसत आ। तब यह कपास, नमक और लोहे के ापार के िलए िस था। क ड़ म, बली का अथ है 'फूलों की लता'।
2014.17. म इसका नाम बली से ली म बदल िदया गया।
मैसूर से मैसू
● मैसूर श ‘मिहशु ’ से िलया गया है । इस श का अथ सं ृ त म ‘भस’ और क ड़ म ‘मिहषासुर’ (दानव) होता है , जो भस के
साथ-साथ मनु ों म भी बदल सकते ह। इस जगह को मीठे पकवान मैसूर पाक और रे शम की सािड़यों के िलए जाना जाता है । िहं दू
पौरािणक कथाओं के अनुसार, े म मिहषासुर का शासन था जब तक िक दे वी चामुंडे री ने उसे मार नहीं िदया था। 2014 म
इसके नाम बदल िदया गया।
मंगलौर से मंगलु
● मगलोर को चार अलग-अलग भाषाओं म चार अलग-अलग नामों से जाना जाता है : तुलु म कुडला, बेरी म मैकाला, क ड़ म मंगलु ,
और कैनेरी कोंकणी म कोिडयाल। इसका नाम दे वता मंगलादे वी के नाम पर रखा गया है ।
बेलारी से ब ारी
● 2014 म बेलारी से इसका नाम बदलकर ब ारी कर िदया। इसके नाम की उ ि पर कई लेख ह। एक िकंवदं ती म कहा गया है
िक जब ब ारी जाने वाले कुछ उपासक िशव िलंग की पूजा करने के िलए नहीं िमले, तो उ ोंने एक ब ा (मापने वाले कप) को
िशव िलंग के प म थािपत िकया और उसकी पूजा की। दू सरी िकंवदं ती इसका नाम पुराने क ड़ श व री से िलया गया है ।
पंिजम से पणजी
● गोवा की राजधानी पणजी ने 1960 के दशक म अपने पुतगाली नाम पंिजम से आिधका रक प से अलग कर िलया।
