Part 1: Data, Variables, and Reasoning

Section 1: Dependant Variable:

Football is a professional sport watched by millions of people every year. The NFL needs

to generate revenue and make a profit in order to keep its business running. One of the biggest

sources of revenue is the results of these football games and the success of these football

organizations. Why do some of these teams have a greater win percentage than others? What

contributes to these teams being superior to others? What are some variables that impact the

win percentages of these NFL teams?

The total win percentage at the 2022-23 regular season baseball games per team is going

to be the dependent variable. The 2022-23 season was the most recent year where attendance

wasn’t restricted. It may be said that before COVID-19 had an impact on attendance, football

had a "normal" year. All 32 NFL teams are measured for their win percentage in the 2022-2023

season. All 32 teams reside in the USA in different states and cities. This data is provided to me

by ESPN.com. These values are all discrete since these are counting the numbers of wins and

losses of teams.

What are some independent variables that can impact a team's win percentage?

Section 2: Independent Variables

This project will examine the independent variables of the strength of schedule and injuries to

determine if there is a correlation to team win percentage (dependent variable). The NFL could

use this information to help determine how they may be able to increase game competition and

revenue, which is good for the game of football overall.

For the strength of schedule, the 2021 strength of schedule of all 32 NFL teams will be used.

This data is provided by cbssports.com.

For injuries endured the whole season, the 2022-23 injured reserve for all 32 NFL teams will be

used. This data is provided by spotrac.com.

The first independent variable chosen is the strength of schedule from the previous year.

The strength of schedule combines the team’s opponent's win percentage from the previous

season to determine if a team will have a tougher schedule or an easier schedule. Usually, if a

team has a tougher schedule it will be more challenging to rack up wins as compared to a team

who may have an easier strength of schedule. Since CBSsports rounded their strength of

schedule percentages, the data used will be the rounded percentages to 3 past the point as it

will make calculations easier. The percentages will be represented in discrete values since a

team's strength of schedule is discrete.

The second independent variable chosen is the 2022-23 injured reserve for all 32 NFL

teams. When it comes to team sports availability is the best ability and these injuries can play a

huge factor in a team’s performance and win percentage. The injured reserve is a designation

used in NFl for athletes who suffer injuries and become unable to play. An NFL football player is

eligible to be placed on the injured reserve if he has suffered an injury that will likely require him

to be out for 4 games so likely 4 weeks. Not having players available to play can really impact a

team’s success and wins/losses. With the help of Spotrac, we have the total amount of players

that teams put on the injured reserve for the 2022-23 season.

The data collected for this project is presented in Table 1 below:
