FACTORS AFFECTING DESIGN & BUILD
CONSTRUCTION PROJECT SUCCESS IN
MANILA, PHILIPPINES
by: YIP HOCK SENG

Manila, Philippines's growing construction industry offers both

significant challenges and fascinating prospects. The constraints
limiting timely project completion are examined in this article,
"Factors affecting the successful completion period of
construction projects in Manila, Philippines," with an emphasis
on the Design and Build (D&B) approach. Although the study
provides insightful information, it might use more investigation
and clarification.

The study's main focus is on the several factors—such as client,

contractor, consultant, internal/external procedures, and
resource—that affect project completion. Using a quantitative
methodology, the authors distributed 967 surveys to various
stakeholders, including consultants, developers, and contractors.
The final study of only 396 replies raises questions regarding
generalizability and the possibility of selection bias, despite the
impressive spectrum of responders.

From intricate bridges and roadways to private houses, the

construction sector works on a wide range of projects.
Nonetheless, they all have three essential traits in common,
regardless of how unique they are: high stakes, long duration,
and resource allocation that is demanding. The intrinsic intricacy
of the project highlights how crucial its effective completion is. In
the past, satisfying client expectations, staying within budget,
and delivering projects on schedule have been the three primary
measures that have been used to define project success. These
components, which illustrate the financial considerations and
stakeholder satisfaction that are inherent in any building project,
are still essential.
The Design-Build (D&B) process has gained popularity in the
Philippines as the country's building industry booms. This
system, in which a single company controls both design and
construction, has the potential for increased efficiency and
speedier completion. However, research into its relevance in the
Philippines is limited. While D&B is widely used around the
world, there are reservations about its applicability for
complicated and risky projects, which are frequent in the
Philippines. According to the studies, problems include unclear
client needs, communication issues, and a lack of cost
management competence.

To ensure projects are completed on time, construction

businesses in Manila, Philippines must pay close attention to
three main areas: procurement methods, currency costing, and
logistical delivery. Proper handling of these aspects are essential
for completing a project successfully and on time.

The researchers sought to uncover the secrets of successful, on-

time projects by polling over 396 construction workers. First, a
smooth, effective procurement system with solid supplier
connections ensures that supplies arrive on time, avoiding
delays and keeping projects on track. Second, by predicting
probable changes and applying financial strategies, businesses
can avoid cost overruns and delays caused by unanticipated
currency fluctuations. Finally, delivering materials and equipment
to the job site on time is the construction equivalent of keeping
the blood flowing. By concentrating on these three areas, Manila
construction companies may increase their chances of
completing Design & Build projects on time. This is especially
important as the city continues to grow and develop.

The study also emphasizes the need of strong organizational

variables such as outstanding project management, emphasizing
the need for a comprehensive approach to success.
Furthermore, the researchers advocate doing similar studies in
other poor nations to evaluate and understand how factors
influencing project performance change across global contexts.
