Activity 11.1

Log on to https://www.footprintcalculator.org/home/en and answer the ecological footprint quiz. (10pts)

1. What is your ecological footprint?

ANSWER: Base on the result, my ecological footprint is 4.1 global hectares.

2. How many planets does your ‘footprint’ need? Why did you get such results?

ANSWER: I need 2.5 Earths for my ‘footprint’. I got such results because of my consumption of
the various resources like food, fuel, shelter etc. . It looks like I’ve consumed some resources
over the limit and therefore if everyone lived like me, we would need 2.5 Earths.

3. The earth’s biocapacity or total available resources is only about 1.8 hectares per person. How
does your footprint compare with this?

ANSWER: My ecological footprint of 4.1 global hectares exceeds the Earth’s biocapacity of 1.8
hectares per person. This suggests that, on average, my lifestyle may be consuming resources at
a rate unsustainable for the planet in the long term. I should consider exploring ways to reduce
my ecological footprint, such as adopting sustainable practices or making environmentally
conscious choices in daily activities.

4. How many are you in your house? Multiply that by 1.8 hectares to get the total biocapacity for the
persons living with you.

Number of persons: 5

Biocapacity for family: 5 × 1.8 = 9

5. Get the total ecological foot print of your family. [Each member of the family will be encouraged to
answer the ecological footprint quiz]. How does this compare with the total biocapacity for your
family?

ANSWER: Mother: 3.9

Father: 3.9

Sister: 4.3

Sister: 4.1

Mine: 4.1
The total ecological footprint per person in my family is 4.06 global hectares. This exceeds the Earth’s
biocapacity of 1.8 hectares per person, suggesting that my family’s overall lifestyle may be placing a
strain on the planet’s resources.

6. If your family’s total footprint is greater than the earth’s biocapacity for your family, what do you
think would be the possible consequences of this fact to our planet?

ANSWER: If my family’s total ecological footprint exceeds the Earth’s biocapacity for the family, it
indicates that our family is consuming resources at a rate unsustainable for the planet. The possible
consequences of this overconsumption include: Resource Depletion: Continued overuse of resources
may lead to depletion of natural resources, affecting biodiversity, water quality, and soil fertility.
Ecological Imbalance: Exceeding biocapacity contributes to ecological imbalance, disrupting ecosystems
and potentially causing irreversible damage to habitats. Climate Change Impact: Increased resource
consumption often correlates with higher carbon emissions, contributing to climate change and its
associated impacts like extreme

7. What did you feel upon realizing the possible effects on our planet of the fact that your family’ total
footprint is greater than what the earth can provide?

ANSWER: Upon realizing that my family’s total ecological footprint exceeds what the Earth can
sustainably provide, I feel a sense of responsibility and concern for the possible effects on our planet. It’s
disconcerting to think that our lifestyle choices may contribute to resource depletion, ecological
imbalance, and climate change. This realization emphasizes the need for change and prompts me to
consider the broader impact of my family’s actions. It’s a call to action, urging me to explore sustainable
practices, reduce our ecological footprint, and actively contribute to the well-being of the environment.
There’s a recognition that small changes in our daily choices can collectively make a significant difference
in preserving the Earth’s resources for future generations.

8. Suggest ways on how to reduce your carbon footprint in a drawing.

ANSWER: In reducing our carbon footprint, every small change adds up to make a big difference. By
embracing public transport, renewable energy, plant-based diets, and opting for reusable products, we
contribute to a healthier planet. Let’s be mindful of our choices and work together to create a
sustainable and eco-friendly future.”

Conclusion:

In reflecting upon the ecological footprints of individuals and families, it becomes evident that our
daily choices have far-reaching implications for the health of our planet. Whether considering personal
lifestyle habits or collective family behaviors, understanding the balance between resource consumption

and the Earth's capacity is crucial. The realization that our actions may exceed the planet's sustainable
limits serves as a call to action. Through adopting sustainable practices, reducing carbon footprints, and
promoting environmental awareness, we can actively contribute to a more harmonious coexistence with
nature. It's a shared responsibility to safeguard the Earth's resources, preserve biodiversity, and mitigate
the impact of climate change. In the collective effort to live more sustainably, we lay the foundation for a
healthier, resilient planet for current and future generations.
