What is Animal Science?

• Animal Science is concerned with the

science and business of producing
domestic livestock species, including but
not limited to beef cattle, dairy cattle,
horses, poultry, sheep, and swine.

• Animal Science is also concerned with

foods of animal origin: meat, dairy foods,
and eggs.

1. Animals in the Ecological System
Ecology – is define as study of relationship
of living things and their surrounding.
Components of Ecological System and
their Relationship:
1. Food producers (plants)
2. Food consumers (animals and man)
The continued growth of plants and
animals depends on maintainance of the
balance of the components.

Interactions of Factors on Animal
Production:
1. Physical and chemical conditions:
a. climate
b. soil & water resources
c. pollution
2. Biological condition:
a. plant resources
b. pest
c. micro-organisms

3. Human factor
a. Cultural condition
b. Social structure of raisers &
c. Involvement in the economic systems.
Manager-Management-Animal Production
Relationship:
1. Intensive management – environmental
conditions are highly controlled.
- Many environmental conditions are
changed to fit the animals.

2. Human factor:
2. Extensive management - less producer
control over the environmental conditions in
which animals are expected to produce.
- Animals are changed to fit the environment.
Therefore: Management decision can then be
made to determine whether changing the
environment or changing the adaptability
of animals in the most economical feasible
alternative or can produce optimal results
of production.

3. Animals and their Economic Utility
Animal have the following attributes that
enhance the ability of an agricultural
system to produce food for man:
1. Animal can feed on and convert plant and
other material which could have otherwise
gone to waste.
2. Animal products have chemical
composition that closely resemble man’s
dietary requirement and therefore more
digestible and nutritious.
