Animal Agriculture and Population
Problems
• With the ever increasing human
population and the reduction of areas for
agricultural production, the challenge to
produce more animal food products is
becoming more and more severe.

Animal Industry
 The animal industry in the Philippines at
present principally produces:
1. Carabao – 20%
2. Cattle – 20%
3. Hogs/Swine – 60%
4. Chicken – 15%
5. Other livestock species such as:
a. Goats
b. Sheep &
c. Ducks

 The country is relatively self-sufficient in
chicken, eggs and pork but import beef ant an
average of 4,500 tons annually.
 Distribution of meat in 1988 presented that:
- Beef = 49%
- Carabeef = 37%
- Pork = 13%
- Chicken = 1%
 Domestic dairy farming sector produces less than
1% of the country’s milk requirement. The rest is
supplied by importation.

• In our local milk production, dairy cattle
accounted for 87% while the carabao
sector contributed around 13%.
