The importance of tourism can be viewed from two perspectives: the tourism industry

A stakeholder is quite literally an individual or group that is involved with a particular
project, organisation or industry. To put it simply, they hold a metaphorical 'stake'

3. Government.
The Government plays a key role in the tourism industry. Throughout the d ferent
levels oftourism policy and planning, the Government will dictate a variety of rules,
requirements and practices. From visa policies to the maintenance of public
infrastructure, most tourism business will operate closely with the Government.

4. Tourism organisations and operators


There are a wide range of tourism organisations and operators.
From travel agents and airlines through to DMOs (Destination Management
Organisations) and travel bloggers, to restaurants, hotels and tourist attractions, all of
these organisations are key players in the tourism industry.

5. Small and medium enterprises


There are a wide range of businesses that are seen as stakeholders in tourism. These
may be directly associated with travel and tourism, such as an airline. They may also
be indirectly associated with tourism, such as a waste removal company (which deals
with the waste created by tourism).

6.Tourists
Tourists are at the very heart of the tourism industry. Without tourists there wculd be
no tourism!

Taking a holiday can greatly benefit a person's quality of life. While different people
have very diferent ideas of what makes a good hliday (there are more then 150
ypes of tourismafter all!), a holiday does have the potential to enhance quality of lfe.
Travel is known to help broaden a person's way of thinking. Travel introduces you to
new experiences, newcultures and new ways of life. Many people claim that they find
themselves' while travelling.
The importance of tourism can be attributed to the educational value that it prcovides.
Travellers and tourists can learn many things while undertaking a tourist experience,
from tasting authentic local dishes to learning about the exotic animals that they may
encounter.
Tourism provides the opportunity for escapism. Escapism can be good for the mind.
t can help you to relax, which in turn often helps you to be more productive in the
workplace and in every-day life.
Rest and relaxation are
very important. Taking time out for yourself helps you 1o be a
happier, healthier person which in turn helps to enhance wellbeing.

1. Marie was born in 1867 in Warsaw, Poland, where her father was a Professor
of Physics. At an early age, she displayed a brilliant mind and a blithe
personality. Her great exuberance for learning, prompted her to contin ue with
her studies after high school. She became disgruntled, however, when she
learned that the University of Warsaw was closed to women. Determined to
receive a higher education, she defiantly left Poland and in 1891, entered the
Sorbonne, a French university, where she earned her master's degree and
doctorate in Physics.

2. arie was fortunate to have studied at the Sorbonne with some of the greatest
Sclentists of her days, one of whom was Pierre Curie. Marie and Pierre were Inaried
in1895 and spent many productive years working together in the physics labcratory
A short time after they discovered radium, Pierre was killed by a horse drawn carriage
in 1906. Marie was stunned by this horrible misfortune and endured heart-bi eaking
anguish. Despondently she recalled their close relationship and the joy that they had
shared in scientific research. The fact that she had two young daughters to raise by
herself greatly increased her distress.

3. Curie's feeling of desolation finally began to fade when she was asked to siucceed
her husband as a physics professor at the Sorbonne. She was the first woma1 to be
Nobel
given professor-ship at the world-famous university. In 1911, she received the
Prize in chemistry for isolating radium. Although Marie Curie eventually sufered a
fatal illness from her long exposure to radium, she never became disillusionec about
her work. Regardless of the consequences, she had dedicated herself to science and
to revealing the mysteries of the physical world.
