ASSIGNMENT-Merchant Of Venice Act 1

ANTONIO:
In sooth, I know not why I am so sad.
It wearies me; you say it wearies you.
But how I caught it, found it, or came by it,
What stuff ’tis made of, whereof it is born, I am to
learn.
And such a want-wit sadness makes of me,
That I have much ado to know myself.
1.Where are Antonio and his friends? What does
Antonio says about his sadness?
2. Give the meaning of:
(a) whereof it is born:
(b) a want-wit sadness
(c)That I have much ado to know myself
3.What reason does Salarino give as the probable
cause of Anonio’s melancholy?
4. State in your own words the scene on the ocean
as described by Salarino, when Antonio’s ship were
sailing.
5. The play begins with the atmosphere of
melancholy. Why do you think that Antonio is
presented as a melancholic and passive character?
