Native Americans And The Beginning Of Our Nation
In school when I was younger, Native Americans were portrayed in the history textbooks
in a negative manner. After returning to school, it s nice to see that textbooks are making
a great effort to get it right. But after reading our textbook and studying about everything
the Native Americans had to go through, at the beginning of our nation. I think their
deaths were the results of a broken heart, along with diseases. Which were brought from
settlers to North America, including measles, scarlet fever, influenza, chickenpox, and
colds. The proverbial broken heart threatens Native Americans, who were brave enough
to put their trust into the European settler s hands or choose to believe what they were
told. In fact, some Indians, surprisingly helped many English settlers. Which brought
different conflicts between their own people, because some choose to believe the
settlers were their friends. Consequently, we can say most conflicts between European
settlers in America and Native Americans were about land. The Indians used large
amounts of land to survive and the Europeans wanted it. In many cases, Europeans
simply took what they wanted. The Indians were taken advantage of by the settlers for a
long time, so the Indians were cheated out of trades, goods, and land. Other conflicts
between the Indians and the settlers was due to their belief they could take over the
Native Americans too. One example, is when settlers forced Natives to be baptized,
stripping them of all their
Analysis Of Leslie Jamison s Mark My Words. Maybe
Whether it be a dragon, tribal marking, Asian character, or a simple phrase, thousands
of people get tattoos daily. Tattoos play a significant role in self expression and
identity in the modern age as well as since ancient times. Tattoos can be just for fun,
symbolic of heritage and ancestry, representative of accomplishments or life events, or
can be just for style. For some people, it s an expression of identity and personal beliefs.
This is exactly the case for Leslie Jamison. She tells the story of her tattooin Mark My
Words. Maybe. On Jamison s forearm, the Latin phrase homo sum: humani nil a me
alienum puto . In English, this is translated to I am human: nothing human is alien to me
(Jamison 458). Throughout her story, she... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout the piece people approach Jamison inquiring about the tattoo and each time
giving a response that she doesn t want. Whenever she explains the translation of the
tattoo, the inquirer immediately questions the motives behind it and gets offended by her
claim to understand humanity and understand everything that is wrong in the world
(Jamison 459). Except, they don t know what Jamison has been through and don t
understand the personal meaning it holds. Although it wasn t her initial intention,
Jamison learns to accept the attention she receives from it. She explains that the purpose
of her tattoo is to attract attention, be aspirational, and cause admiration. But, she also
claims that it also serves the purpose of the opposite of all of those things (Jamison
460). Jamison tells this story to demonstrate the significance and symbolism of a tattoo
and how a simple phrase can mean so much more about a person s identity and how it
represents people.
In Jamison s story, the main focus is her tattoo and its significance. It is odd to think that
ink on an arm could be so meaningful to someone; however, to Jamison, it is her identity.
Tattoos are declarations of selfhood that make people unique and special (Jamison 459).
As previously stated, this tattoo is a new beginning for Jamison. Her tattoo means much
more than a quote on her arm or something that makes her
Narrative Essay On Lifeguards
My daughter s first birthday, which was July 18th, 2007, is a day that I remember like
it was yesterday. We had already celebrated her birthday with the family over the
weekend, so I had just planned to do something small with her. I decided I would take
her to Water Works, a community family aquatic center that we lived by. When I was
younger, my familywould get a membership every summer, and I couldn t wait to do the
same with Lauren. My sister, Amanda, who was watching our four year old nephew
Charlie, was off that day, so they came along too.
Walking through the gates it took me back to my childhood with the smell of the water,
the kids playing in the sand, and the sound of the kids splashing in the water. Amanda
was able to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My hands were becoming sweaty, my heart was racing, and all I could see was my baby
s eye shut. I was in full mom freak out mood at this point. I picked Lauren up and ran
her over to our seat to look at her eye, though she was trying to keep it shut. Her eye
was red and looked like it was swelling. Amanda told me I should have the lifeguards
take a look at it, therefore, I ran across the patio to the life guard station. Lauren just
couldn t stop sobbing and her poor eye was getting worse. The life guards told me that
since she was breathing fine she s probably just having a local reaction, but I needed to
call her doctor to see if I should take her in to get it looked at. They gave me an ice pack,
and tried to tell me everything would be fine.
We swiftly walked back to the chairs to call the doctor s office. The first thing they
asked was is she breathing? well if she wasn t I don t think I would be calling you, I
thought to myself. I told them that she was breathing fine, but her left side of the face
was very swollen, red and warm to the touch even though she had ice on it. The nurse
informed me that I should get her to the hospital. Since this was her first time getting
stung and with the reaction she was having they felt this was the best thing for
New Bravery Back In The Old Years
JK Rowling once said, It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but
just as much to stand up to our friends. Bravery back in the old days is way different
now days because, five year olds went and delivered meat when it was below freezing
out. New bravery is when people stand up to someone without being scared of them or
what they will do. Bravery will change in the future because it has changed through the
centuries. Bravery will always be important and it will always change but it will
somewhat stay the same. Bravery back in the old days is way different now days
because, five year olds went and delivered meat when it was below freezing out. Back
in the day people use to do some stuff that people would not do these
