The design process involves a series of steps in order to achieve the desired output in designing
a building up to its conception. This chapter involves an in-depth lecture about the programming
phase, the Site analysis and the Schematic Design Phase of the Design Process.

THE DESIGN PROCESS: Programming Phase

Programming is also known as the pre-design phase. It involves the in-depth analysis and
documentation of:

 Needs
 Requirements
 Goals and objectives

This can include:

(take note of these needs as this will be the steps you will be doing before doing the initial
planning)

 Space identification (search for the activities of that particular building; functions)./
 Adjacency requirements analysis
 Asset assessment
 Specialized needs assessment
 Codes and accessibility Research
 Identification of conceptual and thematic issues
 Analysis of architectural or site parameters
 Analysis of scheduling and budget (in your case, you will just do the unit costing or
rough estimation)

Typical means of VISUAL PRESENTATION

Aside from doing written information about your initial research also known as your
PROGRAMMING REPORT, since this phase is the start of the DATA GATHERING phase of your design,
you also need to include:

 Site History, Actual Site Conditions

 Space Requirements from Design Standards and Codes, Environmental-Land

Disturbance, Rough Estimate for Budget Constraints, Sun and Wind
 Design Controls (from Existing Building codes)
 Data from In-situ Observation
 Data gathered from interviews or from surveys
 Data gathered from literature or studies
 User Identification (may be derived from Population Data, existing plantilla for office
designs, may be dictated by the client, may be thru the peak hours depending on the
building type)
 Space Identification (taken from design guidelines and case studies)
 Cultural Implication (e.g. Who are the users? For example, their beliefs or religion.
Search for the Filipino or any beliefs (may be regional beliefs like the slope of the roof)
based on their roots as this will have an impact in your design later. If they are Chinese,
the data about Feng shui should be highly considered.)

THE DESIGN PROCESS: Site Analysis

Typical means of VISUAL PRESENTATION

A very good and detailed site analysis will include the following data:

 Lot Plan with bearings

 Design Controls Evaluation – your Maximum Allowable Building Footprint (AMBF)
computed by subtracting the Area of your Setback from your Total Lot Area (TLA). This
will serve as your initial massing reference area
o May also include proposal of the initial location of your structure
 Existing trees and type (include diameter because the diameter of the tree=location
of roots)
 Topography – contours, slope direction
 Geology – soil conditions
 Lot Profile – provide a sectional view of your lot including the RROW (actual elevations)
 Elevation near the RROW
 Site History

 Maximum Flood Level

 Sun Path with Prevailing Winds
 Existing structure (as built location)
 Accessibility (Road networks, width, also locate the probable entry point, identify if it is
a one-way, two-way, usual traffic flow)
 Noise Source
 Vista or your good view
 Locate the probable danger of your site
o (from your SWOT Analysis)
o Put a location for the dangerous areas (e.g. area with the risk of erosion or
landslide. If located, what would be your initial solution?)
 Existing utilities - Where is the:
o Nearest utility pole? (electricity pole, internet pole, telephone, etc)
o Nearest Water main line
o Existing Drainage line
 Also include the distance of the utility to your site
 Locate the nearest Public Areas in the vicinity
 Also include the distance of the Public Area to your site

THE DESIGN PROCESS: Schematic Design Phase

The Schematic Design Phase is also known as the Preliminary Design Phase. It is the preliminary
conceptual, spatial, and technical design of the project.

This includes preliminary space planning often using:

 Relationship diagram matrices

 Bubble diagrams
 Blocking Diagrams
 Stacking and fit plans (you need to master doing this one because this is used to
analyse spaces often in ALE board exams)
 Initial furnishings, fixtures and equipment design/layout
 Development of conceptual and thematic issues
 Color, material, and finish studies

 Preliminary Code Review

 Preliminary Budget Information

Typical means of VISUAL PRESENTATION

For this phase, it is more of the PROBLEM SOLVING phase of your design process. It is the
application of what you have gathered from your programming and site analysis.

You need to include your analysis, computations, and graphic presentation of preliminary
designs like:

 Sun Path Analysis (derived from Climatic Data)

 Wind Analysis (derived from Climatic Data)
 diagrams like Bubble Diagram, Net Diagram, Matrix Diagram, Flow Chart
 Initial Computations (Space Requirements from Design Standards and Codes,
Environmental-Land Disturbance, Rough Estimate for Budget Constraints, Sun and
Wind)
 Site planning (Go back to your Site Analysis and connect your schematics. Overlay
your initial scheme for better analysis.
o e.g. add trees or foliage + go back to your programming at the same time your
site analysis. Now add a backup data like why did you add trees to that
particular area? The benefits of trees should be reflected in your related
literature or studies while the actual perceived effect should be reflected in your
analysis
 Form and Massing Analysis
 Initial Space Layout or space schematics
 Conceptual Site and Building Plans
 Preliminary Section and Elevations
 Preliminary Selection of Building Systems and Materials
 Approximate Dimensions, areas and volumes, perspective sketches, study models
