Contemporary World - Ximena Cervantes

Globalization
Globalization refers to the process of increasing economic, political, and
cultural integration on a global scale.

So, how does globalization affect developed and developing countries?

Positive influnce:
It has been estimated that the proportion of people living in
extreme poverty in the developing world has declined.
The creation of jobs for unskilled labour in developing nations
Economic growth also results in governments putting greater
investments into infrastructure and also increases the quality and
availability of public services.
People are able to more easily move around the world due to
advancements in technology and thereby utilise their skills in other
countries.
The availability of information makes political-type decisions more
transparent.

Contemporary World
Negative influnce:
Globalization has exacerbated global inequalities, thereby making
the rich become richer, and the poor become poorer. In practice,
this has meant a concentration of global wealth and power into the
hands of the wealthier nations.
As cultures become more integrated, there is a loss of cultural
identity often caused by the imposition of "western ideals" on other
nations.
The provision of cheap, skilled labour in the developing world puts a
lot of persons in the developed world at risk of losing their jobs due
to labour outsourcing.
Increased global trade and production may contribute to
environmental degradation, with developed countries often being
major consumers and contributors to pollution.

Trade
(What is WTO and its objectives?)
The WTO, or World Trade Organization, is an international organization
that regulates and facilitates global trade. It was established to provide a
framework for negotiating and formalizing trade agreements and to
resolve trade disputes between member countries.

Negotiating trade rules

WTO rules support maintaining trade barriers – for example, to protect
consumers or the environment.

The rules of the WTO are established through negotiations among

member countries. Decisions are typically made through a consensus-
based process, where all member countries agree on the terms.
WTO members consist of 164 distinct
nations. That is in addition to 24 observer
governments (countries moving through

The digital Revolution
Advantages:
Increased Connectivity: People can connect with
each other globally in real-time, fostering
collaboration and information exchange.
Access to Information: This has facilitated learning,
research, and the dissemination of information.
Economic Growth: Economic growth through the
expansion of e-commerce, digital services, and new
business models. More job opportunities in
technology
Entertainment and Media: Provide a wide range of
content through streaming services, social media,
and online platforms.
Disadvantages:
Digital Divide: Not everyone has equal access to
digital technologies, creating a digital divide.
Job Displacement: Automation and artificial
intelligence have the potential to displace certain
jobs, leading to unemployment and the need for
workers to adapt to new skill requirements.
Digital Addiction: Excessive use of digital devices,
particularly social media and online platforms, can
contribute to addiction and negatively impact mental
health, particularly among younger generations.
Environmental Impact: The production and disposal
of electronic devices contribute to electronic waste
(e-waste).
Terrorism
For example:
Technology can have both Advanced technologies, such as
positive and negative effects on data analytics, artificial
counterterrorism efforts and intelligence, and machine
terrorist activities. While learning, enhance the ability to
