ASSESSMENT#6
I think the aesthetic qualities contribute by making the viewers satisfied on what
they see. The artwork’s aesthetics can express the beauty and the background of the
artwork.
2. The landmarks in your area are not as old as the Parthenon but might need some
restoration work. Choose one historic/vintage building and write about its history and
its current status. Does it need to be restored in any way? Are efforts underway to do
so? What would you do to save the building or landmark?
Fort Santiago
Fort Santiago, built in 1593 by Spanish navigator and Governor Miguel López de
Legazpi for the newly established city of Manila in the Philippines, is a citadel. The
defense fortress is located in Intramuros, Manila's walled city. The fort is one of
Manila's most important historical sites. The fort is one of Manila's most important
historical sites. During the Spanish Empire and World War II, several lives were lost in its
prisons. Before his execution in 1896, José Rizal, one of the Philippines' national heroes,
was imprisoned here. The Rizal Shrine museum has memorabilia of the hero in their
collection, and the fort has his footsteps embedded in bronze into the ground,
representing his final walk from his cell to the location of his execution.
Fort Santiago is now a well-maintained park and popular tourist destination. For
me, it doesn’t need to be restored but to be preserved. It is now in the history and by
restoring it, we are likely to destroying it. Unlike in preserving it, we can take care of it by
not destroying it. When we are preserving a historic artifact or remains, we are also
saving it so that what we have seen today is what the other generations will see in the
future.
3. Collect visual examples of the architecture of Greece and Rome from the internet.
Study the examples carefully and try to determine similarities and differences in the
examples. Do the buildings have the same use? Are the construction methods alike?
How were the buildings named? Discuss of your findings.
Roman Architecture
Pont du Gard
Greek Architecture
The Great Theater of Epidaurus
Parthenon, Acropolis
The most obvious similarity between Greek and Roman architecture is the use
of the Doric, Ionic and Corinthian orders. It is like that Roman is inspired by Greeks.
For example is the column, the Greeks column has parallel lines while Romans column
is more like just round shape. They both like repeating things or design and both used
rocks. I also find that the names of it is almost based on what is really functions.
