Hunger Index 2023 India are Malnourished and FASSAI, 1/3rd of the
indicating a “Serious“ level 17.5% of Children (highest in food(Over 100 million tons
of Hunger in the Severity GHI report) are wasted due yearly) produced in India
Scale to lack of food gets Spoilt or Uneaten

Every day, the dining halls of IMI Delhi witness an average waste of 17
kgs of food, equivalent to a whopping 4 tons annually.
This wastage stems from a combination of student leftovers and excess
food prepared by the canteen.
As conscientious members of the IMI Delhi community, it falls upon us to
devise innovative solutions to tackle this pressing issue and transform it
into an opportunity for positive change.

Collaborating with Clubs and Societies


Adding posters and stories on reducing food wastage in the college mess to create
awareness among the students
Weekly rotation of responsibility among various clubs and societies for creative
content creation(Blogs, posts, inter college competition and other engaging activities)
on reducing food wastage
Regular data collection on student preferences with various food to better
understand and management of the food made
Introducing weekly rewards, medals and leaderboard(in the mess and key events) for
individuals that follow zero food wastage consistently
Additional form after RAC menu to let students choose what or how many meals
would they want to eat tomorrow(students can tick for each meal that they would
want to eat tomorrow) Through this, Canteen Authorities can get informed projection
for the count of students that would eat tomorrow which will drastically reduce the
unused food and help for better supply chain management

Partner with local NGOs for food rescue & redistribution to those in need

Introduce smaller plate sizes as studies show smaller plates lead to less food
waste (19.5% reduction in hotels, 7.4% reduction with 1 cm smaller plates)
Smart bins (that open after student scans the QR code and tracks individual
food dumped by each student). Collaborating with College Management and
Canteen Authorities to create a credit system that automatically adds certain
amount of credits to students each time they don’t waste any food. Students
can use this credits in flavors to buy food and various other services
Collaborate with College Management and Canteen Authorities to implement a
daily food management system in the mess. Create a platform enabling
students to convert money into credits, facilitating daily food purchases. This
not only streamlines food procurement but also promotes conscious
consumption, minimizing wastage while ensuring equitable access to meals
