EXPERIMENT-13

Aim:
To prepare 25gm of cold cream.

Reference:
The Theory and Practice of Industrial Pharmacy by Lean Lachman, Herbert A. Lieberman and
Joseph L. Kanig, 3rd edition.

Theory:
Cream comes under concentrated emulsion and may be o/w or w/o type. Cold cream is a w/o
type of emulsion and the main principle of cold cream involves slow evaporation of water
which lead to cooling sensation on skin that is why it is called cold cream. Borax bee wax are
used as emulsifying agent as well as moisturizer. The application of cold cream ranges from
makeup removal and skin cleansing and protects the skin as it provides oily film on skin surface
giving an emollient property. Common ingredients used in cold cream are liquid paraffin which
act as solvent and emollient, bee wax which act as thickening agent and emulsifier, borax which
is responsible for whitishness and also has anti-bacterial property, distilled water, the pH of
the product should be ranging from 4.6-6.01.

Formula:

Liquid Paraffin- 45% w/w

Beeswax- 15% w/w
Borax- 1% w/w
Distilled water (q.s.) 100% w/w
Methodology:

1. Calculated amount of beeswax is to be taken in a China dish and heated on water bath
till it melts.

2. To this liquid paraffin is to be added, in another beaker borax and little amount of
distilled water are to be taken and heated till the borax is dissolved in water to form
solution. (Temperature of both phases [aqueous phase- water + borax] and [oil phase-
beeswax + liquid paraffin] are to be maintained at same temperature preferably from
75 to 100℃.)

3. The aqueous phase is to be added slowly in the oily phase with continuous stirring
maintained at equivalent temperature till both the phases blend well and whitish cream
type product is obtained.

4. The product after formation is to be removed from water bath and is to be filled in a
wide mouthed container after cooling down.

Evaluation test for cold cream:

pH Determination- Done by pH meter. pH should be equivalent to skin pH of 6.8 to 7.4.

Viscosity determination- Brookfield, Cup and bob viscometer is used.

Spreadibility- It is the extent of area to which topical application is done. This test shows how
well the cream adhere to skin.

Tube extrudability- This test shows how well the cream extrude out of the tube.

Skin irritation test- This test is done to check whether the cream causes irritation on the skin
of the person or not.
