BASE WORDS, Roots, Prefixes, and Suffixes
These word parts give clues to the meaning of a word.
Prefixes and suffixes change the meaning of a word.

Prefix Root Suffix

IN describe able
The prefix “in” means not. The suffix “able” means capable or able to be.
indescribable = not capable of being described

§ The prefix “un” means not. § The prefix “re” means again.
§ The suffix “ful” means full of. § The suffix “ing” shows action occurring.
Ø ungraceful = not full of grace Ø rewriting = currently writing again

Did you notice? Adding a suffix can

change the spelling of a base word.

The prefix “pre” means before. One meaning of the suffix “er” is person.

it would take them to select their books.

Trent’s gaze fell to the floor.
“It’s okay, buddy. You still have an
