BASE WORDS, Roots, Prefixes, and Suffixes
These word parts give clues to the meaning of a word.
Prefixes and suffixes change the meaning of a word.

Prefix Root Suffix

The prefix “in” means not. The suffix “able” means capable or able to be.
indescribable = not capable of being described

§ The suffix “ful” means full of. § The suffix “ing” shows action occurring.

Did you notice? Adding a suffix can


change the spelling of a base word.
