GENERIC OF STRUCTURE
---Orientation---
On October 19, 1999, the province of Timor Timur broke away and became independent
from Indonesia to become the state of Timor Timur. How come? Quite a number of lives were
lost during Indonesia's occupation of Timor Timur. One of the darkest was the bloody tragedy of
Santa Cruz on November 12th, 1991. At that time, the Indonesian military carried out a massacre
of civilians at the Santa Cruz cemetery. This incident occurred due to the presence of individuals
who provoked the pro and contra parties to the independence of Timor Timur.

---Series of Events---
It started in October, the arrival of parliamentary delegates from Portugal was rejected by
Suharto. The youth of Timor Timur who carried out the underground movement had prepared to
welcome the Portuguese delegation at the Dili Moteal Church. However, their actions were
known to Indonesian intelligence. Indonesian intelligence hired provocateurs.
On the night of October 27th, 1991, when a riot started, the Timor Timur youth were
ignited and a fight broke out. On October 28th, 1991, the body of activist Sebastiao Gomez was
found lying lifeless in the Moteal Church.
On November 12th, 1991, after the Mass for the death of Sebastio Gomez, activists
chanting for the independence of Timor Leste headed for the Santa Cruz cemetery. It turned out
that the TNI had been on standby there to open fire. The activists ran back and forth, while the
Indonesian Armed Forces shot, stabbed, and kicked the activists. Finally, many corpses were
swaying. This incident killed 271 people.

This incident is rarely exposed in Indonesia; even in Indonesian history lessons it is never
mentioned, because this event is considered a disgrace to the Indonesian state and is one of the
bloodiest incidents in Timor Leste history. The scars left by the atrocities of the Soeharto era
