to effectively understand and apply the concept of computer, its type and
parts in installing and configuring computer systems (ICCS). The scope of
this module permits it to be used in many different learning situations.
The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students.
The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course.
But the order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with
the textbook you are now using.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Distinguish the types of computers; and

2. Identify the parts of a desktop computer.

What’s In

In your whole life, have you encountered/experienced using the


different types of computer?

Have you tried to see or experience the supercomputers? What are


the types of computers?

This lesson deals with the types and parts of computers in


installing and configuring computer systems under the core
competencies.

What’s New

ACTIVITY 1: Have you experience using the different types of


computer? If yes, in your notebook, write one experience and compare in
terms of specifications, performance, etc. (any type of computer). Make a
table of your preference on how to do it. Name it as QIII_M1_Activity 1.

What is It
Read and understand the types and parts of computers in
installing and configuring computer systems. Your understanding on
these will help you deeply understand the varied types of computers and
its parts in Computer Systems Servicing.

Types of Computers

Supercomputer – the biggest and most expensive type of


computer, which can process trillions of instructions per
second. Supercomputers are at the frontline in terms of
processing capabilities. They are mainly used in scientific
engineering computations. (e.g. IBM Supercomputer Blue
Gene/P at Argone National Library)

Mainframe computer – the second biggest type of


computer. Mainframe computers have the capacity to
process millions of instructions in seconds and are
capable of retrieving billions of data. Unlike
supercomputers, mainframes are usually used for
transaction processing.(e.g. IBM System z9 Mainframe
Computer)

Minicomputer – possesses most of the features and


capabilities of a mainframe computer but is smaller in size
and processing capability. It accomplishes slightly less in
work and has lower performance than a mainframe
computer.(e.g. PDP-7 Minicomputer)

Personal Computer (PC) – a very common type of


computer that is affordable for most computer users.
Other names for this are desktop computers and
microcomputers. (e.g. Dell G5)

Mobile devices (laptops, tablets, smartphones) –


Mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones
possess lower performance and processing capabilities
than microcomputers, while many laptops possess
processing capabilities that can match even top-of-the-
line PCs and microcomputers. (e.g. Dell XPS Tower)

Parts of Desktop Computer

System Unit – the main part of the computer. It is an


enclosure that contains the major parts or components of a
computer.

Chassis/System Case – the enclosure that houses the


CPU and other interior components of a computer.
Normally it has expansion slots, spare drive bays, and
enough space for other components and expansion cards.

Motherboard – the main printed circuit board which holds


the components of a computer. It supplies power and
provides ways for the components to communicate with
each other.

Central Processing Unit (CPU) – a device that handles


and executes all the data and instructions that the
computer receives. Also known as the brain of the
computer.

Memory Module/Board – a device that allows computers


to store and retain information. It is installed into a
dedicated slot on the motherboard, which has varying
specifications, and is therefore motherboard dependent.

Hard Disk Drives – storage devices that hold the operating


system and data files. An HDD has read/write heads
attached to a mechanical arm that moves around a storage
platter.

Floppy Disk Drives (FDD) – a device that reads and writes


information on an outdated storage device called the floppy
disk, which has only 1.44MB worth of storage space.

Optical Disk Drives (DVD/CD/BD-ROM) – a device that


reads and writes information on compact discs (CD), digital
versatile discs (DVD) and Blu-ray discs.

Video Cable Connectors

Video Graphics Array (VGA) – a 15-pin D-subminiature


connector first introduced in 1987 with the IBM PS/2 line
of computers. It is the most common video cable
connector.

Digital Visual Interface (DVI) – developed by the Digital


Display Working Group (DWWG), this interface is used to
connect display devices, such as projectors and
monitors, to a video source such as video graphics
adapter.

High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) – an


audio and video interface that transfers video and digital
audio data from HDMI-compliant video source devices
such as a modem/high-end graphics card device.

Power Supply Unit (PSU) – a device that converts AC


power from the electrical socket to the appropriate power
before distributing it to the system components via power

cables.

Cooling Fan – a temperature-regulating device that


disperses excess heat inside the system unit to maintain
the ideal temperature necessary for the components to
yield optimal output or performance.

CPU Heat Sink – temperature regulators that are specific


to CPUs and processors that are prone to heating due to
their high processing speeds. Heat from the processor
transfers and dissipates into the heat sink.

Internal Speaker – the built-in sound output device that


produces beeps to tell the user if the computer has
encountered an error.

Video/Graphics Card – device that converts data from


the system unit to render an image or display on your
monitor. Some motherboards may have built-in video
adapters which should be enough for most users.

Sound Card – an expansion card that converts data into


sound, which will then be sent to speakers. It also
converts sound into digital formats. Recent
motherboards have built-in sound adapters that is no
need to install.

Network Interface Card – also called network card, this


is an expansion card that allows a computer to connect
to the Internet or to a local area network via a LAN cable
or a Wi-Fi antenna.

Modem Card – enables the computer to connect to the


Internet using a telephone cable.

Ports – an interface on a computer to which another computer or other


peripheral devices can be connected.

Peripheral Devices – auxiliary devices that communicate with the


system unit of a computer. Mouse devices, keyboards, image scanners,
and other input devices are considered peripheral devices. Output
devices like monitors, printers and speakers are also peripheral devices.
