1.2 System of Measuring Angles There are two commonly used systems in measuring angles, the Degree System and the Radian System. Both systems measure a central angle, an angle with vertex at the center of a circle. A degree measure, denoted by °, is defined as the measure of a central angle that subtends an arc equal to 1/360 of the circumference of a circle. A degree measure can be subdivided to minutes (‘) and seconds ("), i.e., 1°.is equal to 60’, and 1’ is equal to 60"; therefore 1° is. equal to 3600" . We emphasize A radian measure (rad) is defined as the measure of a central angle that subtends an arc equal to 1/2 7 of the circumference of a circle. Thus, if ris the radius of a circle, (rade rad =r 2a Since ‘rad is equal to the radius of the circle, it follows that a = a rad When the unit of measurement is omitted, it is understood that the unit is radian. Combining the above observations, we have 180° qo2 270 ee COL r,&trad =r 360 a 480° eid = 57.2958° a ater =1°=_7 =0.01745rad 180 SPHERICAL TRIGONOMETRY 11 The radian and degree measures are related as follows; If represents the radian measure and d represents degree measure Tred x 180° of an angle, then Exampies: 1. Convert 60° to radian measure in terms of z Solution: 7 oo On ea amS0 Se a’ [S0cer es Thus, 60° = = us, 60°= >. 5a ; 2. Convert ag radians to degrees. Solution: os Seil- d 180° 5 gh: S¢| poe ea Fea => d= = 150°. a 180° at Thus, 2 = 150°. PLANE AND SPHERICAL TRIGONOMETRY 12 3. Convert 1.23 radian measures to degrees, minutes and seconds. Solution: 0 80 q’ 1.23rad © 57.2958 = 70.4738 Since 1 radian = : But 1° = 60', so 70.4738 = 70° + arse) = 70°28.428'. Moreover, 1’ = 60’, so that ro2s+0.20() = 70°28'25.68"= 70°28'26"_ Thus, 1.23 radian = 70°28'26". 4. Convert 32°16'50" to radians, correct to four decimal places. Solution: Convert minutes and seconds to degree first as follows: le 1° 2 | — "| —— | = 32° + 0.2667° + 0.0139° = 32.2806° 32) +16( 22) +50 (
