TOPIC OF THE DAY

Linear relationships

Learning objectives:
Understand that a situation can be represented either in
words or as a linear function in two variables (of the form
y = x + c or y = mx), and move between the two
representations.
SUCCESS CRITERIA

•I can understand that a situation can be represented

either in words or as a linear function.
•I can draw conversion graphs for linear functions.
•I can analyse and interpret a conversion graph.
Term3 Week 2

coordinate linear conversion input

pair function graph output
1. Coordinate pair
2. Linear function
3. Conversion graph
4. Input
5. Output
Write the coordinates for
(x1,y1) from the coordinate
grid.
For any function, the input and output numbers
can be used to create a coordinate pair (x,y)

For example : for the function y = x + 4 , When you put

the number 2 in , you get 6 out.
Which would give the coordinate pair (2 , 6)
A linear function is defined as a function that has
either one or two variables without exponents. It
is a function that graphs to the straight line.

The coordinate pairs created by the function form a straight

line when plotted on a coordinate grid.

Linear means ‘straight line’

WORKED EXAMPLE

An inch is a unit of measurement of length. 1 inch is approximately

equal to 2.5cm.
a.Write a function connecting length in inches (x) and length in cm (y).

Ans - y = 2.5X
b.Complete the table for inches and centimetres.
WORKED EXAMPLE

C.Use your values to draw a conversion graph for inches and centimetres
WORKED EXAMPLE
