Little Man’s Long Walk

Many people dream of hiking the famous Appalachian
Trail in the US. This 3,500-kilometre trail passes through
14 states, starting in Georgia and ending in Maine. It’s a long,
hard journey. But that didn’t stop five-year-old Harvey Sutton and his
parents, Josh and Cassie, from doing it. They finished their 209-day
journey soon after Harvey’s fifth birthday. But Harvey isn’t the youngest
person to hike the trail. Juniper Netteburg was four when she
completed it in 2020!
How did these children do it? Well, Harvey’s parents have taken him
for walks since he was only two years old. They used to take him
walking every day, and each walk was a little longer than the one
before. When they set out on the Appalachian Trail, Harvey could walk
long distances.
On the trail, the Suttons hiked all day, sometimes for ten hours. When
they arrived at their campsite, they put up their tent and spent the
night there. The next morning, they got up at 5.30 to pack their
sleeping bags and equipment and then began hiking again.
The biggest challenge was making things interesting for Harvey,
because young children get bored quickly. To overcome the problem,
the Suttons played fantasy games, encouraging Harvey to use his
imagination. While they were walking, they “planned” spaceships and
explored nature, looking at frogs, lizards and other animals.
They met other hikers along the way. Some of them gave “Little
Man” – their name for Harvey – toys and things to play with.
Fun-loving Karl Sakas (“Sugar Man”) shared part of the Suttons’
journey. He used to organise “treasure hunts” by hiding toys on the
trail and then giving Harvey maps to follow in order to locate them.
Little Man loved these activities, but his favourite activity was climbing
over rocks. He always had plenty of energy! At the end of each day,
when they arrived at their campsite, everyone was tired – except
Harvey. He still wanted to play with Sugar Man!
The Suttons’ Appalachian adventure ended on 9th August 2021. And
a month later, Harvey started a different kind of adventure – kindergarten!
