Assessment Guidelines
This document details how a student using the
Corrodere online coating inspector training
programme can progress through the Institute
of Corrosion Coating Inspector Certification
Levels 1, 2 and 3.
Levels of Certification
The ICorr Req Doc has three levels of certification
which are defined as follows:
Level 1
Level 1 personnel are qualified to execute
operations according to written instructions. ICorr
Level 1 certified personnel have demonstrated
competence in:
• Setting up and calibrating specific inspection
or test equipment
• Conducting tests and inspections based on
written criteria
• Recording and categorising the results of tests
and inspections against written criteria
• Reporting the results
Level 1 personnel, however, are not required to
demonstrate competence in selecting the extent
of inspection or testing required, determining
appropriate inspection or test methods, or
interpreting specification requirements.

Level 2
Level 2 personnel are qualified to conduct
and oversee inspection and testing operations
according to established or recognised
procedures. They have demonstrated
competence in:
• Determining the scope of inspection or testing
within the boundaries of agreed procedures.
• Selecting appropriate inspection and testing
methods within the confines of agreed
procedures.
• Setting up and calibrating inspection or test
equipment.
• Carrying out and supervising inspection or
testing activities.
• Interpreting and assessing results in
accordance with relevant normative
documents.
• Defining the limitations of common test
methods.
• Understanding and translating normative
document requirements into practical
instructions suitable for real working
conditions.
• Creating written test instructions.
• Organising and reporting inspection or test
results.

Level 3
Level 3 personnel are qualified to:

• Direct any inspection or test operation for

which they are certified.
• Assume full responsibility for an inspection or
test facility and its staff.
• Establish and/or validate work instructions or
procedures.
• Interpret normative documents.
• Determine the extent of inspection and the
specific test methods and procedures to be
employed.

Level 3 personnel have demonstrated:

• Competence in interpreting and assessing

inspection or test results according to existing
normative documents.
• Possession of the knowledge and skills
necessary to select inspection methods
and tests. They can also contribute to the
development of inspection and test criteria
when none are otherwise available.
• A broad understanding of all coating materials,
application methods, and related areas.
• The ability to mentor and guide personnel
below Level 3.”

Level 2 – Preparation of written instructions for Level 2 & 3 Practical Assessments

assessment.
• The assessor will display each piece of
inspection equipment on the screen, and
candidates will be asked questions about the
equipment and its usage.
• Subsequently, candidates will be requested
by the assessor to describe the procedure
and application of each piece of inspection
equipment according to the relevant standard.
• The assessment will last approximately 1 hour -
1 hour and 30 minutes.
• Candidates will be promptly informed by the
assessor whether they have passed or failed
the assessment.
