FOCUS: Allah’s attributes

+ Our duties

The first five passages in the syllabus relating to God in Himself are: Ayat al Kursi 2.555; Al-Anaam
6.101–103; Fussilat 41.37; Shura 42.4– 5; Ikhlas 112.

All 5 passages teach us about Allah’s Oneness, His Tawhid. Surah Ikhlas revolves around this theme.
It states: “Say: He is Allah. The One and Only. The Eternal, Absolute.” These verses discuss Allah’s
unity. Belief in Tawhid is the foundation of Islam. ‘Ahad’ refers to the Oneness and Uniqueness of
Allah as He is one without any hint of plurality. He has no one to share in his Lordship, neither in his
essence or His attributes. He alone is worthy of worship. Moreover, He is eternal and immortal
without beginning or an end, nor limited by time, place, or circumstances. As said in Ayat ul Kursi,
“Allah! There is no God but He, the living, the self-subsisting, Eternal.” Surah Ikhlas continues by
saying, “He does not beget, nor is He begotten. And there is none like him.” These verses clearly
negate the concept of trinity. They explain that he who wishes an offspring must have a mate from
his own species. Then how can God have a son when there is none like him? Hence, shirk is kufar as
Allah is unparalleled in existence and attributes. So, we must worship him without associating
partners with Him. Surah Anaam states, “How can He have a son when He has no consort?” Thus,
Muslims should not associate partners with Allah in His Lordship, worship and names and attributes.

Further to this, the next theme explained in these passages is “Allah’s Omnipotence”. Ayat ul Kursi
or the Verse of the Throne states, “His throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels
no fatigue in guarding and preserving them for He is the Most High, the Supreme.” These verses
explain Allah’s attributes of Supremacy, Majesty, and Glory. Allah’s will encompass everything
physical and spiritual in the Earth and the heavens. He has authority and control over the universe.
There is none equal to him about anything He does or to challenge the commandments He issues.
He is free of human weaknesses and His Sovereignty is vast. Surah Shura extends this concept
saying, “To Him only belongs all whatever is in the heavens and all whatever is in the Earth, and He
is Supreme, the Greatest.” Moreover, Surah Al Anaam further explains: “then worship Him: And He
has power to dispose of all affairs. No vision can grasp Him, but His grasp is over all vision.” Hence,
Allah’s vision encompasses the whole universe, and He has power over all. So with that, a man must
know that going to shrines and visiting saints to seek their help is futile exercise and great sin.
Adding on, the next theme is “Allah’s Omniscience”. Ayat ul kursi states, “He knows what is before
them or behind them. Nor shall they encompass any of His knowledge except as He wills.” These
verses tell us that Allah’s knowledge is complete, absolute, perfect, and All- Embracing. He is aware
of the hidden and the manifest, the present as well as the past and that is beyond our perception. It
is further mentioned in Surah Anaam that "He created all things, and He has full knowledge of all
things.” Hence, Allah is Omniscience. He watches us at every second of every day and nothing is
hidden from Him. Our knowledge is limited to what He wants us to know.

The next theme discussed is "Allah as a creator." This theme is discussed in Surah Fussilat which
states, "Adore not the sun and the moon, adore Allah, who created them, if it is Him you wish to
serve." These verses explain to humanity that night and day are not conflicting powers but are both
creations of Allah. Allah is the sole cause and the source of all that exists and whatever exists is a
sign of his power. Hence, Allah is alone worthy of worship and submission. Surah Anaam states,
"That is Allah, Your Lord! There is no god but He, the creator of all things." Hence, Allah is the sole
creator of the universe and his creations are his signs for the observant among us. Whatever exists is
a wondrous sign of Allah's existence. Therefore, the signs are not to be worshipped. Instead by
pondering over them, one can understand the reality of Allah's Greatness and creative power.

Subsequently, the last theme amongst the themes discussed in the given passages is "Allah's
Mercy”. This theme is mainly discussed in Surah Al-Shura where Allah explains that "and the angels
celebrate the praises of their Lord and pray for forgiveness of all beings on earth: Behold! Verily
Allah is He, the Oft-forgiving, the Most Merciful." This surah implies that while all human beings are
weak and liable to error and sins, Allah has willed upon himself the law of grace and mercy despite
all our evil doings. This exceptional quality of Allah’s grace and mercy is further stressed in a hadith
of prophet, "Allah says: Verily My grace and mercy outstrip my wrath." Hence, despite the
persistent transgression of his commands and the rejections of his message, Allah mercifully forgives
his men so that they may find themselves at the right path before it is too late. This attribute of Allah
gives hope to the sinner, we must repent and seek Allah’s forgiveness, and He will surely forgive us
and guide us for the right path.

Q2 a) Choose two from the following passages and write in detail about the several ways in which
God describes in them how He is unique: 6.101–103, 42.4-5, 112, 41.37. [10]

MARKSCHEME:

6.101–103, 42.4-5, 112, 41.37 choose any two
• Allah is unique because he is Ahad, alone etc.
Verse + Explanation + Example (everything born in pairs, he is alone hence unique)
We can add references from other surah’s Shura> mercy, alone, powerful> How is he
unique?
He is unique knowledge wise> Past, present and future no one else knows hence he is
unique. Has given us knowledge in Quran.

FOCUS: Extensive detailing about unique

attributes of Allah should be written. Address
only two passages from the given question.
The first five passages in the syllabus relating to God in Himself are: Ayat al Kursi 2.555; Al-Anaam
6.101–103; Fussilat 41.37; Shura 42.4– 5; Ikhlas 112, describe how God is unique.

First verse of Surah Ikhlas states, “He is Allah the One and only” describes God’s uniqueness in the
most concise way; He is perfect in His attributes and action; therefore He is One and Only, the main
theme of Tawhid and oneness of Allah. It explains the essence of Allah, he is one and only God, the
only god to who worship is due. He is the creator, master, and the sustainer of the worlds, “Allah the
Eternal, the Absolute.” The second verse declares that Allah is Al-Samad, the perfect, the sublime.
Al- Samad is one of Allah’s names and according to Ibn e Abbas, implies no beginning and no end, no
dependency and no equal of any king. Such is the significance of this singular attribute of Allah that
the Prophet said, “Any supplication using the grand divine name is sure to be granted.” He does
not give birth nor die nor leave any inheritance. He does not have a beginning or end. As it is
mentioned in Surah Ikhlas, “He does not beget, nor is He begotten”. He cannot have anyone equal
to Him so He does not have any partners or any offspring, as He cannot share His uniqueness or
authority with anyone. This clearly shows Tawhid and the Oneness of Allah. He has no other partner
because it is written in another verse that if there were two gods there would have been conflicts
and problems between them. This surah thus, shows how Allah is unique as no one else in the entire
universe is alone or Ahad. Surah Shura also emphasizes his unity by saying that how He can have a
son when he has no spouse. Surah Al-Anaam also states, “How can He have a son when He has no
consort?”

He is all alone which proves his oneness and uniqueness as we have people such as our parents,
siblings etc. The Quran also says, “Do not take two gods for there is only One God.” Thus, this is
important as it tells us about Allah as our sole God and we worship Him only. Thus, Muslims should
not associate partners with Allah in His Lordship, worship and names and attributes.

This Surah tells us how Allah is unique as he has no equal to Him. No one can come up to the same
level as Allah says in the Quran, “And there is none like unto Him.” Thus, this clearly establishes the
fact that Allah is All Powerful and Omnipotent. No one can match Him or possess the same
attributes as him, therefore it means that he has no parents, offspring, or wives. This surah depicts
his uniqueness by telling us about his Tawhid and oneness.

Surah Al-Fussilat (41) Ayah 37 describes God’s uniqueness through His ability power and control
over everything He has created. He is unlike the things that He has created, so is unlike the sun and
the moon because He does not change, rise or set. The things that He has created are there to show
humans how to recognise and worship Him. We see how Allah is the Creator of the Universe and
how he made everything the universe, “Among his signs are the night and the day, and the sun and
the moon.” This clearly verifies how Allah made all these things for us. It shows that all the
mountains, rivers, trees, and everything has been created by Allah which shows his uniqueness as no
one in the entire universe can do that except for him. Thus, it shows his supremacy and power over
us. Thus describes the unique quality of Allah as the Creator.

This surah also states, “Prostrate yourselves not to the sun and to the moon but prostrate yourself
to Allah who created them. If it should be Him that you should worship.” Thus, it shows his
uniqueness and how only he alone deserves to be worshipped. It clarifies to us that the ruler and
master is Allah and Him alone. No one else can possess the power to create nor the power to be
Ahad which proves his uniqueness.

• Relation as a creator + Our duties
• Relation as a sustainer+ Our duties
• Relation as forgiver+ Our duties
• Relation as teacher+ Our duties
• Relation as a protector+ Our duties
• Relation as the lord of day of judgment + Our duties

FOCUS: Relating Allah to his creations using his

attributes and reference from specified passages.

Allah’s relation with the humankind is a unique one, unlike any other relations. It is a bond between
a creator and creation and in the Quran, Allah has explained it in many places to tell men about their
duties and this undying bond. Some of these passages in which this relation is explained are Al
Fatiha (1), Al Baqarah (2:21-22), Al Alaq (96:1-5), Al Zilzaal (99), Al Naas (114).

Allah has taught humans that our relation with Him is that He is the Creator, and we are His
creations. It is mentioned in Surah Alaq that “Say in the name of your lord who created you created
you from a clot of congealed blood" these verses are the first 3 verses revealed to the Holy Prophet
show that was the first relationship introduced of Himself with humankind. He says that apart from
planets and the earth he created humans form scratch without any help and from a drop of
congealed blood to full grown humans with beating hearts and souls which is a miracle no one else
can do so. Since Allah has started the verse with 'read', it shows that as he created us it is our duty in
return to recognize Him as the creator and praise Him. “He is your Lord and the Creator of all
things” this verse shows that in return to our Creator it is our duty that we must strictly follow all
teachings and the obligations set by Allah for us to get into Jannah.

Allah is the Sustainer of humans, and this created world. He has provided humankind with blessings
such as sustenance for his Creation and He never leaves them alone when they need His help. It is
stated in Surah Al Baqarah, "He who has made the earth you couch and the heaven you canopy,
and sent down rain from heavens, and by it brought forth fruits for your sustenance & then do not
set up rivals unto Allah, when you know." Therefore, we should always be thankful to Allah and all
of one blessing and make beneficial use of all that is provided by him. Moreover, it is our duty “not
to worship the sun and the moon but Allah if it is Him you wish to serve."

Along with all these grandeur and powerful attributes Allah also has the relationship of Mercy and
forgiveness with His creation. Allah is also the Forgiver of his creations as He forgives the major sins
of humankind. Allah is the most merciful and shows his forgiveness towards his creation as a Hadis-e
Qudsi states "My mercy overcomes my wrath." Allah will always forgive every sin (except for Shirk)
no matter how big it is. Allah wants his creation to succeed in the purpose of life and gave the
blessing of forgiveness stated in Surah al Fatiha, "(Allah) the most gracious, most merciful."
Therefore, Muslims should always remember Allah and ask for forgiveness to him, one must seek
forgiveness after committing a sin as small as looking at the opposite gender after first glance (which
is acceptable) Even Hazrat Sawdah spent days in devotion to Allah, who is one of the mothers of
faithful. One must avoid sins and enjoying virtuous deeds as they will be judged on the Day of
Judgment. It is stated in Surah Al-Zilzaal. "And one who has done an atoms weight of good shall see
it, and one that has done an atom's weight of evil shall see it." One must always seek forgiveness
from this evil.

Allah is also the Teacher and Guide for all humanity. Muslim would go astray without his guidance as
this world is filled with distractions. Muslims supplicate in Al Fatiha as stated, "Show us the right
path, the way of those whom you have given your grace." According to the Surah, Muslims should
always be humble and Obedient towards Allah by doing virtuous deeds & staying away from shirk
and all evil. Allah expects no Muslim to perform shirk/lie associating partners with Allah as stated in
surah Ikhlas, "Say he is Allah, the one and only". Oneness of Allah as a guide is also emphasized in
surah Al-Alaq who does not feel burden in providing guidance to his creation by preserving and
protecting them to a higher life through Quran and Sunnah. "Read, and your Lord is the most
bountiful, who taught the pen, taught man what he knew not". As Allah has fulfilled his
responsibility by guiding the humanity and by providing them with knowledge. Muslims should make
effective use of his knowledge to achieve a better life and to succeed in Allah's test. They must obey
and follow Allah's guidance and make sacrifice in his way.

Allah is also the Protector of all worlds and of the mankind. He puts the believing men and women
through difficulties to test those faithful. He protects his creation from evil such as black magic as
said in Al-Naas, "I seek refuge with the lord of mankind. From the evil of the sneaking whisperer,
who whispers into heart of mankind." As Allah is ready to always protect his creation, one must
seek help from Allah and no one else. One must believe in Allah as the protector during challenging
times as Allah will always grant them (his creation) blessings after tough times. Muslims today must
be honest and obedient to Allah as prophet saw said "I have left with you two things, the Quran
and Sunnah. By following these you will never go astray."
He is the Lord of the Day of Judgment as Allah says, “On that day men will proceed in companies
sorted out to be shown their deeds.” This verse tells us how on the Day of Judgment, all mankind
from Adam to the last human will appear in front of Allah and will be shown their deeds and there
he will judge them, and he will be a fair and merciful judge. Then “anyone who has done an atom
weight of good shall see it and anyone who has done an atom weight of evil shall see it.” Allah will
judge with mercy, but it is our duty to fear Him, and worship Him always as He says: “worship your
guardian lord who created you and those before you.” We should always remember the Day of
Judgment, have fear of Allah and obey obligations e.g., prayer & zakat. We must stay away from bad
deeds and shirk as well as realize how Islam is such an easy religion and how easy it is to please
Allah.

All along the Quran, Allah teaches us about the bond and relations between Himself and the Created
World. We should intensively study them and learn this not a one-sided relation because Allah has
fulfilled all his blessings upon man and he expects man to be obedient to him in return.

INTRO:
The five passages studied i.e., Surah Baqarah (2:30-37), Surah Anaam (6:75-79), Surah Maida
(5:110), Surah Doha (93:1-11), Surah Kauthar (108:1-3), highlight multiple relationship of Allah with
his Prophets which can be seen as a teacher, guide, creator and much more.

CHOOSE ANY TWO FROM THE FOLLOWING:

Hazrat Adam:

Surah al Baqarah (2:30-37) highlights the relation between Allah and Hazrat Adam. Allah created
Hazrat Adam and made him His representative on the earth. He made Hazrat Adam His vicegerent
on the earth as it is stated in the Quran “I will create a vicegerent on the earth.” Thus, this shows
Allah’s relation as a Creator. Surah Baqarah states “bow down to Adam.” Thus, this shows that Allah
made Hazrat Adam from clay and fed him all the knowledge, language and wisdom making him
superior to all His other creations which is why He told all His creations to bow in front of Adam.
Thus, it was Adam’s duty to preach Allah’s message and worship Him only and associate no partners
with Him.

Allah made Hazrat Adam full of knowledge and wisdom as he states “and He taught Adam the
names of all the things.” This shows the relation of Allah with Hazrat Adam as a Teacher and shows
us how Allah is All-Knowing and All-Wise. He knows the hidden and the manifest and shared some of
his knowledge with Hazrat Adam by teaching him the names of all things, the things that the angels
did not even know. That is why it his duty to obey Allah alone, and spread his message as he knew
Allah is the Supreme being who has knowledge of all things power of the world. The surah further
verifies Allah’s relationship with Hazrat Adam as a teacher by saying “In truth it is you who are the
All knower the All wise.” thus this tells us that Allah is the only one in the whole universe Who has
knowledge about everything in the past, present and future. Hence it was duty of Hazrat Adam
attain knowledge and preach the message of Allah to mankind (his descendants). Allah states in
surah Baqarah “Did I not tell you that I know the secrets of the heaven and the earth. I know what
you reveal and what you conceal.” Thus, this tells us further about Allah’s all-knowing nature and
He knows what no one else knows, knows all the secrets of the heavens and the earth.

Allah as a Sustainer to Hazrat Adam is also shown as Allah made Ama Huwa, to be Hazrat Adam's
wife. Allah gave them permission to live in the Gardens of Paradise, where they were granted
necessities to eat from the bountiful things in Jannah. However, Allah prohibited Adam and Ama
Huwa to eat from a particular tree, showing Allah's relation as a Guide and a Warner to Hazrat
Adam. Allah states in Surah Baqarah, "We said, 'Adam! You and your wife dwell in the Paradise and
eat of the bountiful things in it as you wish. But do not approach this tree, or you will run into
harm. And transgression'." Thus, it was the duty of Adams to obey Allah and His command.

Allah also acts as a Punisher to Hazrat Adam, as the prohibited tree was chosen for the purpose of
trial by Allah to see if Hazrat Adam and Ama Huwa stay obedient to it His command, but Iblis
persuaded Hazrat Adam to eat from the prohibited tree and caused Hazrat Adam to commit a sin.
Due to this Allah punished them and said, "Go down, with enmity between yourselves. On Earth
will be your dwelling place and your means of livelihood for a time." Thus, Allah sent them to Earth
and removed them from Jannah. However, the surah also shows Allah's relation as a Forgiver to
Adam. When Adam realized his mistake and started to repent. Thus, Allah took pity on him and
taught him the words of forgiveness for Allah forgives sins. Allah said, "Verily, He is the One who
forgives, the most merciful." Thus, Adam found Allah, the most Merciful and learned to repent from
his sins and seek forgiveness.

Hazrat Isa:

From the conversation of God with Hazrat Isa in Surah Al-Maida (5:110), we can see how God
blessed Hazrat Isa with miracles in times of difficulty. When Hazrat Maryam gave birth to Hazrat Isa,
people started to persecute her and speak ill of her. They started calling her impure. To protect
Hazrat Maryam, Allah gave Hazrat Isa the gift of speech at the age of infancy and hence, he
confirmed her mother’s purity of character. Surah al Maida states “I gave you the Holy Spirit so you
spoke to people in childhood and in maturity.” Surah Maida also tells of some other miracles given
to him so his people would believe him like giving life to birds made from clay heal the blind and
cure the leapers, “I restrained the children of Israel from you and when you showed them obvious
signs among the unbelievers said ‘this is nothing but evident magic'.” Thus, Allah as a
Protector/Giver can also be seen as Allah gave Hazrat Isa all the abilities so that people might
believe him. Thus, in turn for these miracles it was duty of Hazrat Isa to worship none but Allah and
obey no one else and be grateful to Him for all the blessing he showered upon him.

Allah’s relationship with Hazrat Isa can be also seen as a Teacher as He says, “I taught you the Book
and Wisdom the Law and Gospel.” This verse shows Allah as the most knowledgeable who passed
off His some of His knowledge to Isa. Thus, it was Isa’s duty to attain this knowledge and pass it on to
the whole of mankind as Messenger of Allah, which he fulfilled

Hazrat Abraham:

From the conversation of God with Prophet Abraham in Surah Al-Anaam (6:75-79), Allah’s
relationship with Abraham (A.S) was like that of a Guide. Allah showed him the true path, even
though Abraham’s family and ancestors were idolaters. Indeed, it was Allah’s mercy on him as He
says "Thus did we show Abraham the power and the laws of the heavens and the earth, so that he
might have certainty." Thus, it was Abraham’s duty to recognize Allah, worship Him alone and avoid
shirk as he said (reported in Quran), "For me, I have set my face firmly and truly towards Him who
created heavens and the earth, and never shall I give partners to Allah."

Q2 a) Describe what the following surah tells Muslims about the circumstances in which they were
revealed 112(Al-Ikhlas) 108(al-Kauthar)? [10]

MARKSCHEME:

• Background
• Translation (whole)
• Explanation

FOCUS: Explain the background of both Surah’s

in detail along with the references.
Quran is a source of guidance for all humanity which covers whole range of themes. The Surah Ikhlas
surah was revealed when the occasion of revelation of this chapter is about pagans who asked the
Prophet (PBUH) some questions. They came to Prophet (PBUH) and said: “O Muhammad these are
our gods as, you can see. You, too, describe your god to us, is your god made of gold, silver, or
iron?" If you respond to our questions, we may believe in you and become Muslim. After three days
“Surah Al Ikhlas” was revealed. This chapter clarifies the oneness and uniqueness of God as the
pagans wanted. The surah states:

"Say: He is Allah, the One and only. Allah, the Eternal, Absolute. He does not beget, nor is he
begotten. And there is none like him."

The content of the surah clearly established God’s oneness, and that he has no end or beginning,
unlike the idols that were worshipped by pagans at that time. It also negated the idea of trinity
which the Christians believed in, as well as negating that God had any physical or human
characteristics. It even mentions Allah’s freedom from time and space by saying that he is as Samad
which tells he is not dependent on anyone for anything as Allah himself says in the Quran: “There is
no deity but me, so worship me alone.” (Surah Al-Anbiya). Allah even does not have parents and he
is incomparable to any of his creation as surah Inam also repeats same thing. “How can he have a
son when he has no consort?”

The Surah Al Kauthar (108) tells us about his intense love with Prophet (PBUH). This surah was
revealed when the enemies of Prophet (PBUH) used to call him "Abtar" which means the one cut off
since his male children had passed away. God revealed these verses to console and give hope to the
Prophet (PBUH) that it would not be him, but his enemies that would be cut off, and that he would
be given abundant blessing in life or next. This surah states:

“Verily, We have granted you (O Muhammad) Al-Kauthar (a river in Paradise). So, pray to your
lord and sacrifice (to him only) for he who hates you, he will be cut off.”

This content of this surah tells us that through this surah Allah is directly consoling the Prophet
(PBUH) and this surah helped revealed the prophet tension he was facing at that time of being called
“Abtar.” This surah even mentions the abundant blessing of God given to Prophet (PBUH) like
revelation of the Quran, knowledge, his progeny through his daughter, his Ummah and other
rewards.

The Surah Naas (114) mentions the three fold relation of Allah with the mankind. This surah was
revealed when the Prophet (PBUH) fell ill for around six months during which the hairs from his head
fell. One day while the Prophet was asleep, two angels came to him. One said that a “spell of black
magic was cast upon it”. The second asked that “where did he use the magic?” the first angel replied
that the comb with fallen hair was used that had been placed inside a spandex of palm tree beneath
the stepping stone which was inside the well of Dharwan. The prophet (pbuh) woke up and asked Hz
Aisha that “do you not think that this is from Allah to inform me about one of the cause of my
illness?” then he send H. Ali and h. Ammar bin yasir, they drained the water of the well and later
found some hair of the Prophet (PBUH), as well as few teeth from his comb. In response, Allah
revealed Surah Naas. As the prophet (PBUH) recited each verse by unknotting each knot, but when
he unties the last knot, he thought as if he was released from a cord.
“Say, I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind.

The king of mankind.

The God of mankind.

From the mischief of the whisperer who withdraws.

Who whispers into the hearts of mankind.

Among jinn’s and among mankind.”

This surah advises the believers to seek Allah Almighty’s protection, who is the Rabb of all mankind,
the sustainer and the Ilaah (deity). It tells about Shaitan, along with other jinn’s and evil minded
people, may cause harm. So the best way to protect one from such evil minded people and jinn’s is
to approach Allah only. Quran says, “Verily, Shaitan (Satan), is to man, an open enemy” Surah al
Naas and Surah Faalaq are together known as “Mauzzatain”, the two surah’s in which refuge with
Allah has been sought.

Surah al Doha (93), is the shortest yet one of the most effective surah of the Quran. This was
revealed when the Prophet (PBUH) had stopped getting revelations from Allah for some time. The
infidels began to say that Allah has left the Prophet (PBUH), so this chapter was revealed. His
enemies mocked him, but Allah had provided the Prophet (PBUH) with a break so that he could
distress and refresh himself for a new beginning. The surah says,

“By the glorious morning light.

And by the night when it is still.

Your Lord (O Muhammad) has not forsaken you, nor is He displeased.

And truly the Hereafter will be better for you than the present.

And soon your Lord will give you (all good) so that you will be pleased.

Did He not find you an orphan and gave you shelter?

And He found you wandering, and He gave you guidance.

And He found you in need, and made you independent.

Therefore, do no treat the orphan with harshness.

Nor drive the beggar away.

But tell about the bounty of your Lord.”

This passage elaborates Allah’s special relationship with Prophet (PBUH). It mentions that how Allah
comforted the Prophet by mentioning His blessings upon him in the past, present and future. Allah
specifically addresses the Holy prophet (PBUH) and mankind in general, not to give up hope in
difficult times and always be thankful to Him and share bounties with the less fortunate ones. Allah
says, “And surely we shall try you till we test those who strive hard and preserve in patience.”

Hazrat Adam:

Surah Baqarah Chapter 2, verse 30-37 describes the experience of Hazrat Adam. This passage
highlights the creation of man and his high status as vicegerent of Allah on earth. This passage
highlights the superiority of Prophet Adam over all creatures as he was the first human being sent to
this universe by Allah, thus he is the one creating Adam. Once he was created, Allah bestowed upon
Hazrat Adam, knowledge and recognition of the names of all persons and objects, which gave Adam
a high regard over his other creatures like angels, he asked the angels: “Tell me the names of these
if you are right.” The angels replied: “Glory to you, we have no knowledge, except what you have
taught us.” The angels admitted their inability and recognized the limits of their knowledge in
comparison to Hazrat Adam.

Allah also acts as a Sustainer to Hazrat Adam when Allah made Ama Huwa to be Hazrat Adam wife,
they were granted permission by Allah to live in the gardens of paradise where they were also
granted necessities by Allah to eat of the bountiful things in Jannat, which made Hazrat Adam realize
that Allah is the most supreme and should only worship Allah. Moreover, Allah also set limits for
Hazrat Adam which was regarding eating from a particular tree. Thus, Allah acts as a guide and said:
“We said, Adam! You and your wife dwell in paradise and eat of bountiful things in it as you wish.
But do not approach this tree or you will run into harm and transgression.” Thus, it was his duty to
obey Allah in his command.

Iblis, out of jealousy, as he was removed from heaven, persuaded Hazrat Adam to eat from the
forbidden tree. Allah had prohibited the tree ass a trial to see how for Hazrat Adam and his wife
remained obedient to his command. When they went, against the command of Allah, He punished
them and said: “Go down with enmity, between yourself. On earth will be your dwelling place and
your means of livelihood for a time.” Thus, they were sent to earth and removed from Jannat.
However, Hazrat Adam soon realized his mistake and decided to repent from his mistake. Allah took
pity on him and taught him the word of forgiveness for Allah forgives sins as said: “Verily, He is the
one who forgives, the most merciful.” Thus, Hazrat Adam found Allah to be the most of forgiving
and learned to repent from his sins and seek his forgiveness.

Hazrat Isa:

Surah Maida chapter 5, verse 110 describes the experience of Hazrat Isa and the relationship
between him and Allah. This passage first highlights how Hazrat Isa was born. Allah allowed him to
have a miraculous birth as he had no father. Allah this way blessed his mother Hazrat Maryam. This
was only made possible by Allah’s powers only. Allah also recalls all his favors upon Hazrat Isa and
his mother as said: “O Isa, son of Maryam! Recount my favors to you and your mother!” Hazrat Isa
was also blessed by Allah who gave Hazrat Isa the Holy Spirt through Angel Jibrael. It is mentioned in
the surah as: “Behold! I strengthened you with the Holy spirt so that you spoke people in
childhood and in maturity." This miracle given to Hazrat Isa shows Allah as a bestower of miracles to
Hazrat Isa, so he would worship and praise Allah only.

Moreover, Allah also taught him to book and wisdom and revealed the heavenly book, Injeel on him,
as a teacher, guiding him on the right path. Allah also bestows many other miracles to Hazrat Isa
such as being able to breathe life into birds made of clay, healing those born blind and disease
lepers. These shows that Allah have the most power and allowed Hazrat Isa to make a dead one alive
as stated: “Behold! You bring forth the dead by my leave.” Thus, Hazrat Isa could give life to those
people who were spiritually dead. Allah is also a protector towards Hazrat Isa because when Jews
tried to kill him and called his miracles magic, Allah raised him up unto himself to protect him.

Hazrat Ibrahim:

The story of the Hazrat Ibrahim, mentioned in Surah Al-Anaam Chapter 6, verse 75-79, starts with
his rejection of the idols worshipped by his misguided father, Azar, and other misguided people in
the city. Then, Allah prompted Ibrahim to see His signs in the heavens and the Earth, to guide him to
the realization that there is a Great Creator for this fantastic Universe. The process of guidance
started at one night when he marveled a bright planet that he saw, thinking that it was God, but
when it faded away, he realized that it was not what he was looking for. Then, he thought that it
could be the Moon or the Sun but when they disappeared, he realized that these were not God
either. Finally, he reached the conclusion that God must be the Creator of the heavens and the
Earth, with all of what in them. He is also the Sustainer of this system, the Only One worthy of being
worshipped.

The passage of the Quran says: "So also did We show Abraham the power and the laws of the
heavens and the earth, so that he might have certainty. When the night covered him over, he saw
a star; he said: 'This is my Lord.' But when it set, he said, 'I do not love things that set. When he
saw the moon rising in splendor, he said: 'This is my Lord.' But when the moon set, he said: 'Unless
my Lord guides me, I will surely be among those who go astray.' When he saw the sun rising in
splendor, he said: That is my Lord; this is the greatest.' But when the sun set, he said: "O my
people! I am indeed free from your giving partners to God." This Quranic passage outlines the ways
through which God guided Hazrat Abraham to identify the Creator and Cherisher who is Most
Supreme. The passage also proves that Hazrat Ibrahim, like other messengers, was a man chosen by
God because his intuitive progress of observing the celestial bodies and not accepting them as
deities shows that it was all divinely ordained. God planned for his birth in a polytheistic community
that boasted of its knowledge about the heavenly bodies and Hazrat Abraham's quest in search
Truth that led him to identify God.

CONCLUSION:
These surah’s show the experience of two messengers, and show how they faced difficulties during
their time and were helped by Allah through miracles and forgiveness.

Q2 a) From the Quranic passages you have studied, describe the ways in which God have
knowledge of Himself to His Messengers. [10]

MARKSCHEME:

• Intro [ Names of Passages]

• Knowledge given to Hazrat Adam + Ref
• Knowledge given to Hazrat Ibrahim + Ref
• Knowledge given to Hazrat Isa + Ref
• Knowledge given to Hazrat Muhammad + Ref
• Conclusion

FOCUS: Expand on the above points write about the

prophets mentioned. Do not merely describe stories,
but relate it to knowledge of Himself (Allah).

Allah has enlightened and guided his beloved Messengers throughout their lives which has led to the
Messengers gaining further knowledge concerning Allah’s Divine Attributes. In Surah Baqarah (2:30-
37) Allah has described His relationship with Prophet Adam (AS). Allah created Adam (AS) as His
vicegerent and fed him with knowledge and wisdom to help elevate his position before Allah’s
creations; “And we taught Adam the names of all things.” He then commanded His creations to
“bow down to Adam (AS).” While all others heeded, Iblis refused and was thereby banished. Iblis
therefore vowed to lead Adam (AS) and his generation astray. Allah then created Huwa as Adam’s
companion from Adam’s rib and said, “Adam, you and your wife dwell in the Garden and eat of the
bountiful things as you wish.” However, Allah set limits to this freedom by forbidding Adam from
approaching a particular tree. Regardless, Iblis misled Adam and persuaded him into eating from it.
Allah therefore banished Adam, “Go down with enmity between yourselves.” Later, Adam (AS)
repented and Allah forgave him, “Then Adam learnt from His Lord words of inspiration and his
Lord turned towards him, for He is often-returning, most Merciful.”

Hence through these experiences, Adam became aware of Allah being a Supreme Being who created
him single handedly and became a Teacher by giving him knowledge that helped surpass the
intellectual capabilities of all other creations under set commandments. Allah is also a Punisher but
more importantly He is Merciful. The Prophet (PBUH) said, “My (Allah’s) Mercy outweighs my
wrath.”
Ibrahim’s (AS) experience is recounted in Surah Al-Anaam (6:75-79). Ibrahim belonged to a society
of people with vast knowledge of celestial bodies which came to be worshipped by his people.
However, Ibrahim believe Allah to be a deity who is eternal and not just valid for mere hours of a
day. He hence went through a series of analyzations. Allah says: “When he saw the moon rising in
its splendor he said, ‘This is my Lord.’ But when it set, he said ‘Unless my Lord guides me, I will
surely be among those who go astray.” Hence, Allah helped in enlightening Ibrahim and aided him
identifying his sublime Lord as the true Creator of all such creations. “For me I have set my face
firmly and truly towards Him who created the heavens and the earth and never shall I give
partners to Allah.” Thus, Allah showed Ibrahim His Unity and control over creations.

Similarly, Hazrat Isa’s (AS) experience is recounted in Surah Al-Maida. When Hazrat Maryam gave
birth to Isa (AS) people began accusing her of impurity. Allah thereby blessed Isa (AS) with the power
to speak in infancy using which Isa (AS) confirmed his mother’s purity of character and chastity, “I
gave the Holy Spirit, so you spoke to people in childhood and infancy.” Allah further blessed Isa
(AS) with various miracles to help Isa (AS) to illustrate the truth of his Prophet Hood. These included
resurrecting the dead, curing the blind and lepers and bringing birds made of clay to life, “When you
showed them obvious signs among the unbelievers said, ‘this is nothing but evident magic’.”
Consequently, Allah also gave Isa (AS) knowledge and “I taught you the Book and Wisdom, the Law
and Gospel.” Hence through these experiences Isa showed God to be a Powerful Being, independent
and limitless in power and knowledge. He also came to know that Allah is a Teacher, a Guider, and a
Helper.

The Prophet Muhammad faced hardships like the other prophets, but God reminds him that He gave
him blessings in this life and the next, which relieved the Prophet and gave him reassurance that
God was looking after him. God gave him shelter, guidance and independence, and gave him
blessings in the form of Kauthar, which some say is a river in paradise, or offspring. He learns about
God through His generosity, mercy, and guidance. It is stated in the Surah Kauthar: “Verily, We have
granted you (O Muhammad) Al-Kauthar (a river in Paradise). So, pray to your lord and sacrifice (to
him only) for he who hates you, he will be cut off.”

Hence, Allah aided His Messengers throughout their lives and this aid helped broaden the
knowledge and insight of these messengers who came to know of Allah’s incomparable attributes.

Q2 a) Using Quranic passages from your syllabus, describe how God guided His Messengers to
increase their belief in Him? Refer to at least two messengers in your answer. [10]

MARKSCHEME:

• Intro [Name of Passages]

• Guidance to Prophet Muhammad [Detail] + Ref from Surah Duha and Kauthar
• Guidance to Prophet Adam [Detail] + Ref from Surah Baqarah (2:30-37)

FOCUS: Expand on the above points and write about at

least two of the prophets, giving references from
passages. Refer to the passage and give details of how
that passage shows God’s guidance to that messenger
and how, in turn, that messenger realised His belief in
God.

The five passages studied i.e., Surah Baqarah (2:30-37), Surah Anaam (6:75-79), Surah Maida
(5:110), Surah Doha (93:1-11), Surah Kauthar (108:1-3), highlight the relationship of Allah with his
Prophets which allowed the Prophets to increase their belief in Him.

Prophet Muhammad:
God has guided His beloved messengers at many a time that has led to the strengthening of their
belief in Him. In Surah Doha (94) Allah Almighty has addressed the grieving of Prophet Muhammad
(PBUH). When the Prophet (PBUH) was tormented beyond limits, he grew tense and became
grieved. Allah therefore revealed this Surah to give assurance to Prophet and comfort him by saying,
“Your Lord has not forsaken you, nor is He displeased.” This helped guide Prophet (PBUH) in his
time of need and therefore strengthened his belief in Allah. Moreover, Allah further assured Prophet
that the hurdles he was facing were finite and the abode of the Hereafter would be better for him
than this world and before long Allah would bless him so abundantly that he would be pleased. “And
truly the Hereafter will be better for you than the present. And soon your Lord will give you so
that you will be pleased.” Hence, this guided the Prophet (PBUH) to continue facing the hardships
and increased his belief in Him. Thereafter, Allah recounted His blessings bestowed upon Prophet as
when he was born as an orphan, Allah provided best arrangements for his upbringing; “Did He not
find you and orphan and give you shelter.” Moreover, Allah blessed him materially and spiritually:
he was poor but Allah removed his financial worries through Hazrat Khadija. Additionally, Allah
guided him when he was in the quest of truth, meditating in Cave of Hira when Angel Jibrael
revealed to Him the Book of Light. “And He found you wandering and He gave you guidance. And
He found you in need and made you independent.” Hence, Allah guided Prophet (PBUH) in every
stage of his life and so strengthened his faith in Him. Subsequently, Allah instructed the Prophet
(PBUH) to treat the orphans with kindness, help the poor and needy and thank Allah for the
blessings He was bestowed on him and share them with others. “Nor drive the beggar away but tell
about the bounty of your Lord!” Hence Prophet received words of advice from Allah which guided
Him to the straight and righteous path and increased his faith in Him.

Moreover, Allah also increased his belief by revealing Surah Kauthar (108) at the time when
Prophet's son died in infancy and the Quraysh used to call him 'Abtar', which meant the one cut off
due to no male off springs. Allah consoled him by this surah that it will not be the Prophet but the
enemies who will be cut off in the future. Allah said: “Verily, We have granted you (O Muhammad)
Al-Kauthar (a river in Paradise). So, pray to your lord and sacrifice (to him only) for he who hates
you, he will be cut off.”

Prophet Adam:
Allah guided His beloved messengers throughout their lives. He guided Prophet Adam which can be
seen in Surah Al-Baqarah (2: 31-37) “And He taught Adam the names of all things." Allah created
Adam as the foremost human and made him His vicegerent for which he guided him by giving him
abundant knowledge. He became his teacher and bestowed him with knowledge that even Allah’s
pious servants i.e., the angels did not know of. Hence Adam was guided by Allah which therefore
strengthened Adam’s belief in Him. Next Allah continues by saying, “Adam! You and your wife dwell
in the garden; and eat of the bountiful things in it as you wish but do not approach this tree, or
you will run into harm and transgression.” Allah created a partner for Adam from Adam’s rib i.e.,
Huwa, his wife and provided them with sustenance. However, Allah being a guider set limits and
forbid Adam from approaching a particular tree. Hence, through Allah’s guidance He increased
Adam’s belief in Allah as the supreme power.

However, Shaitan i.e., Ibis who had refused to prostrate before Adam and accept him as the head of
all creatures had been banished. He out of malice and jealousy convinced Adam into eating from the
forbidden tree. This incurred the displeasure of Allah and He sent Adam and Huwa to Earth. Adam,
later admitted he was at fault and regretted his mistake intensely so Allah taught him how he could
ask for forgiveness; “Then Adam learn from his Lord words of inspiration and his Lord turned
towards him; for He is often-returning and Most Merciful.” Hence Allah strengthened Adam’s belief
in Him as being the Most Merciful. He once again guided Adam upon how to ask for forgiveness and
thereby forgave him.

Q2 a) From the Quranic passages you have studied, write about what lessons can be learnt from
God’s conversation with Adam and Jesus? [10]

MARKSCHEME:

• Intro [Name of Passages]

• Relation/Conversation with Hz. Adam + Ref from passage
• Relation/Conversation with Jesus + Ref from passage
• Lessons learnt

FOCUS: Briefly describe the story of the prophet and

write the lessons from it. Use the passages in the
syllabus. Do not paraphrase the translation here.

From the Quranic passages Surah al-Baqarah (2:30-37) and Surah al-Maida, we can learn a lot of
lessons from God’s conversation with Adam and Jesus.

Surah al-Baqarah (2:30-37) highlights the relationship of Allah with Hz Adam. Allah created Adam
and made him His representative and vicegerent on earth. As the Quran states, “I will create a
vicegerent on earth.” Thus, from this we can learn how Allah is the Creator of mankind and
everything including His messenger and us. Therefore, we learn how Allah is the only Creator and
Master of His universe and we can learn to obey and worship Him only.

From Allah’s conversation with Hz Adam, we see how Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom. He
knows and sees all and He passed on this knowledge onto Adam by teaching him the names of all
things, the sun, the moon, and the stars. As surah al-Baqarah states, “And He taught Adam the
names of all things.” Thus, this verse clearly shows Allah as a teacher and highlights the importance
of knowledge. We learn about the importance of knowledge and how Allah promotes learning and
explaining, hence we learn to always find seek knowledge from wherever we can. We learn that we
should work on gaining wisdom and should always work hard to gain more knowledge and wisdom.
We should go out of our way and explore the universe. The importance of knowledge can also be
seen in this verse, “In truth it is you who is the All-Knower.” This further clarifies Allah’s knowledge
on all things and how he shared it with Hz Adam. Thus, giving us the lesson to out of our way to seek
knowledge and wisdom.

Surah al-Baqarah verse 30-37 also highlights how Allah sustained Adam in the heaven by providing
him all sorts of blessings such fruits to survive. The Quran states, “You and your wife dwell in
paradise and eat of the bountiful things in it as you wish.” Thus, this shows how Allah did not just
leave Adam alone in ignorance but gave and sustained him with all the things essential to his
survival. Allah blessed him with fruits, trees, and milk to survive; and it was the duty of Adam to
always obey and worship Allah as he was the Sustainer and the Master. Hence from this we learn the
lesson of how Allah sustains us. He has provided us with crops, plants, and trees to survive. We learn
that Allah s our only master and that is why we worship Him and Him alone. We learn not to
associate any partners with Allah as he is all giving.

Allah can also be seen as a warner in Surah al-Baqarah when he warned Adam not to go near a
specific tree and not eat from it. Allah says in the Quran, “But do not approach this tree or you will
run into harm and transgression.” Thus, this clearly shows how Allah had set limits and it was
Adam’s duty to abide by these limits. Hence it teaches us as well that God has sent is down with
limits and we learn to listen and abide by these rules for example, God had has told us not to take
interest. Thus, we learn the lesson to always listen and follow to the rules and regulations of Allah
Almighty.

Allah’s relationship with Adam can be seen as a punisher in verses 30-37 of Surah al-Baqarah, when
Allah punished Adam by sending him down to earth as he broke Allah’s law and ate an apple from
the tree. The Quran states, “Go down with enmity between yourself. On earth will be your
dwelling place and your means of livelihood for a time.” Thus, from this we can learn that we
should always listen to Allah and follow his commands or otherwise we will be held accountable and
punished on the Day of Judgement. Thus, we learn that we should always follow and listen to the
commands of Allah. However, Allah can also be seen as a mercy when he forgave Adam when he
prayed and supplicated to Allah for forgiveness. As Surah al-Baqarah states, “He is the one who
forgives, the Most Merciful.” Therefore, from this we learn a lesson that God if Oft-Forgiving. We
learn that if we make a mistake, we should ask and repent for forgiveness and God being the Most
Merciful will forgive us.

From God’s conversation with Jesus in Surah al-Maida (5:110) we see how God blessed Jesus with
many of the miracles in times of difficulty. When Maryam gave birth to Jesus all the people started
persecuting and speaking against her. They started bullying her and calling her impure. To save his
mother from these difficulties, Allah blessed Jesus with speech at the age of an infant who saved his
mother and proved her chastity. Surah al-Maida states, “I strengthened you with the Holy Spirit so
that you spoke in childhood and maturity.” Thus, from this we learn how Allah always helps his
believers in difficulty, we know and learn the lesson that God will never leave us alone or abandoned
in a hardship, but He will always be there for us and help us.

God also gave Jesus many of the miracles so the unbelievers would believe and listen to him. Thus,
Allah gave Jesus a miracle to raise the dead alive, cure the blind and give life to statues of clay of
birds. He could also cure diseases such as with lepers with was incurable. As Surah al-Maida states,
“You make out of clay, as it were a figure of a bird, by my leave and you heal those born blind and
the lepers by my leave….” Thus, Allah gave Jesus these miracles, so the unbelievers listen to him
about the message of Allah and do not reject him. The Quran says, “I restrained the children from
Israel from you when you showed obvious signs and the believers said, ‘This is nothing but evident
magic’.” Thus, to persuade the unbelievers Allah blessed Jesus with all these miracles. Thus, it
teaches us to believe in the message of Allah, we must believe in His messages and oneness and
should worship him alone. We should listen and believe how Allah blessed his messengers to show
signs of himself we learn not to associate any partners with Him.

Surah al-Maida also states, “I taught you the Book and wisdom, the Torah and Injeel.” Thus, this
shows the knowledge of Allah and how he transferred his knowledge to both the Prophets. Allah
taught Musa to learn, read and write. He taught the sacred book of Torah with shows the
importance of knowledge and wisdom. It shows us how Allah Almighty who is All-Knowing made
sure that his messengers were learned. Thus, it teaches us to always search and find knowledge. It
tells us the importance of gaining wisdom and how we should always try to find some knowledge to
gain from everything. The importance of learning and reading can also be seen in Surah Alaq which
says, “Read, in the name if your Lord.” Thus, further telling us how important knowledge is.

Hence from God’s conversation with Adam and Jesus we learn a lot of lessons. We learn about the
importance of gaining knowledge and only worshipping Allah. We learn that God is our Warner,
Punisher and Sustainer. He created us and gave us food to live hence he has power and right to set
limits for us. If we break these limits, he has the power to punish us. We learn how God is the Most
Merciful and how we must always ask for forgiveness, repent, and supplicate to Him only.
