ASTM D 75
Covers sampling of both coarse and fine aggregates for the purposes:
1. Preliminary investigation of the potential source of supply
2. Control of product at the source of supply
3. Control of the operations at the site of use
4. Acceptance or rejection of the materials.
Terminology:
The smallest sieve opening through which the entire amount of aggregate is required to pass.
One size larger than the first sieve opening through which the entire amount of the aggregate is
permitted to pass.
Securing Samples:
Procedure:
Avoid sampling coarse aggregate or mixed coarse and fine aggregate from stockpiles or
transportation units whenever possible, particularly when gradation is required.
If there is no other way than to take sample from stockpiles, a general guidance is as under:
It is very difficult to insure unbiased samples from stockpiles, due to segregation which
occurs when stockpiled, with coarser particles rolling outside base of the pile.
In such case, power equipments is used to collect material, should be drawn from various
levels and locations in the main pile after which several increments may be combined to
compose the field sample.
If power equipment is not available, take samples from pile in three increments taken
from top third, at the mid-point, and at the bottom third of the pile.
A board shoved vertically into the pile just above the sampling point to prevent further
segregation.
In sampling stockpiles of fine aggregate the outer layer (segregated) should be removed
and take sample from beneath.
Sampling tubes approximately 30-mm min by 2-m min in length is inserted into the pile
at random locations to extract a minimum of five increments of material to form the
sample.
The number of field samples required depends on the criticality of, and variation in, the
properties to be measured.
The number of field samples from the production should be sufficient to give the desired
confidence in test results.
