Nutrition is important to all of us. What we eat has a profound effect on our health and our
enjoyment of life. Nutrition is the process of taking in food and converting it into energy and other
vital nutrients required for life. According to the World Health Organization Trusted Source, these
nutrients must come from food, and they’re vital for disease prevention, growth, and good health.

2
Nutrients are substances required by the body to perform its basic functions. Nutrients have one or
more of three basic functions: they provide energy, contribute to body structure, and/or regulate
chemical processes in the body.

3
Nutrients have any important functions including:
1. They are the main source of energy for the body.
2. They help in building and repairing body tissues.
3. Increases the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.
4. Helps in the synthesis of collagen.
5. Provides proper structure to the blood vessels, bones and ligaments.
6. They also help in maintaining the homeostasis of the body.

4
This is a picture of the food guide pyramid. The triangular symbol you see on many food packages,
was developed by nutrition experts at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in 1992. A Pyramid
is an educational tool that translates nutrient requirements into the foods you need to eat and helps
you put into action the advice offered by the Dietary Guidelines. The Pyramid divides all foods into
six categories, based on the nutrients they contain.

5
The six categories of the Pyramid are 1. Grain products (such as bread, cereal, rice, and pasta), 2.
Fruits, 3. Vegetables, 4. Milk products (such as milk, yoghurt, and cheese) 5. Meats and other high-
protein foods (such as lean meats, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs, and nuts), 6. Fats, oils, and sweets.

6
Nutrients can be broken into two categories:
Macronutrients are nutrients that a person needs in larger amounts which provide your body with
energy. Macronutrients include water, protein, carbohydrates, and fats.
Micronutrients are nutrients that a person needs in small doses and go a long way. Micronutrients
consist of vitamins and minerals. Although the body only needs small amounts of them, a deficiency
can cause ill health. So, There are six main groups of essential micronutrients and macronutrients.

7
Proteins are macromolecules composed of chains of subunits called amino acids. Amino acids are
simple subunits composed of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen. The benefits of proteins are
necessary for tissue formation, cell reparation, and hormone and enzyme production. It is essential
for building strong muscles and a healthy immune system.

8
Carbohydrates are molecules composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Carbohydrates are
broadly classified into two forms based on their chemical structure: simple carbohydrates, simple
sugars, and complex carbohydrates. These nutrients provide a ready source of energy for the body
and provide structural constituents for the formation of cells.
9
Third, Fat:
Fat is high in calories, but those calories are an important energy source for your body. The Dietary
Guidelines for AmericansTrusted Source recommends that 20 to 35 percent of your daily calories
come from fat, but the World Health OrganizationTrusted Source suggests keeping it under 30
percent of your calories. Fat provides stored energy for the body, functions as structural
components of cells, and signalling molecules for proper cellular communication. It provides
insulation to vital organs and works to maintain body temperature.

10
Fourth, Vitamins:
Vitamins are vital for warding off disease and staying healthy. Vitamins regulate body processes and
promote normal body-system functions. The thirteen vitamins are categorized as either water-
soluble or fat-soluble.

11
Fifth, Minerals:
Minerals are solid inorganic substances that form crystals and are classified depending on how much
of them we need. They’re essential for many body processes are necessary proper cellular function,
and comprise body tissue, including building strong bones and teeth, regulating your metabolism,
and staying properly hydrated.

12
Sixth, Water:
Water is another nutrient that we must have in large quantities. More than 60 percent of your total
body weight is water. Water can transport essential nutrients to all body parts, transport waste
products for disposal, and aid with body temperature maintenance.

13
In conclusion, nutritions are really important for our body. We need balanced nutrition for a healthy
life. A healthy lifestyle can be applied by eating nutritious food that is processed properly, exercising
regularly, and getting enough sleep.
