The Nassau class battleships were a group of four dreadnought battleships built for the Imperial German

Navy; was Germany's response to the Royal Navy's commissioning of the revolutionary "all-big-gun"
battleship Dreadnought. The class included Nassau, Rheinland, Posen and Westfalen; All four ships were
laid down in mid-1907 and completed between May and September 1910. Compared to contemporary
British battleships, the Nassau-class ships were lighter and had a larger beam. However, they were two
knots (nautical miles per hour) slower, as the German ships retained three-chamber longitudinal
expansion steam engines compared to the more powerful British steam turbines. These ships also
carried smaller main guns, 11 inches (280 mm) instead of the 12 inches (305 mm) fitted on British ships.
