Summary of the First Document

The story begins with the exodus of 10 Bornean datus from their homeland due to theoppression of Datu
Makatunaw. The 10 datus are as follows: (1) Dato Pote [Datu Puti], (2) Dato Lubay, (3) Dato Bangcaya,
(4) Dato Paiburong or Payburong, (5) Dato Somacuel, (6) Dato Domangsil, (7) Dato Domalog or
Domaloglog , (8) Dato Padoginog , (9) Dato Domongsol , and(10) Dato Balensusa.
They landed on the mouth of the river Sinaragan and landed where they first encounteredthe Aetas who are the
natives of the Island. Datu Puti expressed his desire to discuss with theirchief Datu Marecudo
concerning the buying of land for the settlers and the two sides met on themouth of Jalauor river, in a place called
Dagame
. The Borneans proposed to buy land by barteringto Marecudo a golden hat ( sadoc) and a golden wash-
basin. Marecudo’s wife Maiuantiuan however refused to acknowledge the sale unless she was given a necklace

(colintas) so long itwould reach the ground. Datu Puti and his wife Pinangpang consented to her wishes and requested

in turn for the aetas to give them “a cavan of crabs, a wild pig with long tusks, and a full grownwhite deer with long horns.” With
the barter complete, Marecudo declared that all the ancestors ofthe Borneans could settle wherever they pleased, either on the
coasts or on the mountains.
