Indicated for treatment

postmenopausal
women
Prevention (Fosamax): 5
mg PO qDay or 35 mg PO
once weekly.

Treatment (Fosamax): 10
mg PO qDay or 70 mg
once weekly.
Optimal duration of
use not determined;
for patients at low-risk
for fracture, consider
drug discontinuation
after 3-5 years of use
• Take with plain water only, not coffee, juice, or
mineral water.
• Sit or stand upright for at least 30 minutes
after administration.
 Hypocalcemia reported with
use of bisphosphonates;
correct hypocalcemia prior to
therapy.
Ensure adequate calcium and
vitamin D intake.
 Patients who is taking
alendronate for long
time should take calcium
& Vit D supplements to
correct hypocalcemia.
Co-administration with calcium, antacids, or
oral medications containing multivalent
cations will interfere with absorption of
alendronate.

Space the two doses with at least

2-3 hours.
Bioavailability of alendronate was slightly
decreased when alendronate and
levothyroxine were co-administered to
healthy subjects.
