A MENTAL HEALTH CASE

Students' poor mental health in

higher education is a growing
public health and policy concern.
According to a 2020 Insight
Network survey of students from
ten universities, "nearly half have
experienced a serious
psychological issue for which they
felt they needed professional
help" and "1 in 5 students has a
current mental health diagnosis"—
a rise from 1 in 3 in the same survey
conducted in 2018.
Over a three-year period, 85% of
colleges in England's 105 Further
Education (FE) colleges reported
an increase in mental health
concerns, according to a
research. Students were widely
affected by sadness and anxiety;
99% of colleges indicated that at
least one student had severe
anxiety, and all colleges reported
that at least one student had
depression.
A UK study discovered that levels of psychological
distress rise as students enter university, and recent
evidence suggests that the prevalence of mental
health problems among university students,
including self-harm and suicide, is increasing, with
increases in demand for services to support student
mental health and reports of some universities
seeing a doubling in the number of students
seeking help.

Many prevalent mental health

issues certainly pose a
significant threat to students'
psychological well-being, but
they also have educational,
social, and economic
ramifications, such as academic
underperformance and an
increased chance of dropping
out of university.
A current global COVID-19
pandemic caused a significant
influence on psychological wellness
across society, with concerns that
younger individuals (ages 18-25)
have been disproportionately
affected. According to Canada's
data, "almost two-thirds (64%) of
those aged between the ages of 15
and 24 showed a negative impact on
their mental health, while nearly a
third (35%) of those aged 65 and
older reported a negative impact on
their mental health since physical
distancing began"
DON’T ISOLATE
YOURSELF
This shows that older persons are
more equipped for the type of social
isolation caused by the COVID-19
response, whereas young adults
have found it more difficult to cope
with. According to figures from the
National Union of Students in the
United Kingdom, more than half
of

heredity might increase a person's
susceptibility to mental health disorders.

OVERVIEW
The awareness and adoption of
understanding, knowledge, and support for
mental health-related challenges, conditions,
and well-being is referred to as mental health
awareness. It attempts to lessen the stigma
associated with mental health problems and
motivate people to get treatment when they
need it. By increasing awareness,
communities can work to establish mental
health-focused supportive environments that
provide easily accessible resources for
individuals in need.
.This initiative focuses on common
mental disorders such as anxiety,
depression, and bipolar disorder, as
well as more severe conditions such
as schizophrenia and personality
disorders. Mental health awareness
includes both the promotion of
overall well-being and the
understanding of the difficulties that
people with mental health
conditions face.
OVERVIEW

Efforts to raise mental health awareness frequently

include educational campaigns, public discussions,
events, and the dissemination of accurate
information via various mediums such as websites,
social media, and other platforms. These public
awareness campaigns typically aim to increase
empathy, understanding, and open dialogue about
mental health.Promoting mental health awareness
also aids in the reduction of the stigma associated
with mental illnesses. Misconceptions and
stereotypes can lead to discrimination and prevent
people from seeking professional help or talking
about their problems with others.
Mental health is important for overall well-being, and here
are some practical tips to help maintain and improve it:

Prioritize self-care: Make sure to engage in

activities that bring you joy and relaxation. This
could include exercising, pursuing hobbies,
practicing mindfulness or meditation, getting
enough sleep, and maintaining a balanced diet.

Seek support: Reach out to friends, family, or support

groups when you need someone to talk to or share
your feelings with. Sometimes, speaking to a mental
health professional such as a therapist or counselor can
also be beneficial.
Next Tips :
MANAGE STRESS: FIND HEALTHY WAYS TO COPE WITH AND
REDUCE STRESS, AS EXCESSIVE STRESS CAN NEGATIVELY
IMPACT MENTAL HEALTH. THIS MAY INVOLVE PRACTICING
STRESS-REDUCING TECHNIQUES, SUCH AS DEEP BREATHING,
JOURNALING, OR ENGAGING IN ACTIVITIES YOU FIND
CALMING.

Maintain a routine: Establishing a daily routine can

provide structure and stability, which can be
particularly helpful during challenging times. Set
realistic goals, prioritize tasks, and ensure you
dedicate time for self-care and relaxation.
