HURRICANE
Today we will:

Define what a storm is.

Discuss three examples of
storms and their effects:
Thunderstorms
Tornadoes
Hurricanes
Reflect on how humans can
deal with these weather
disturbances.
What are
storms?

Storms are extreme

disturbances in the
Earth's atmosphere.
What is a
thunderstorm?

It is a storm with heavy

rains accompanied by
lightning and thunder.

A thunderstorm may also include hail

and strong winds. It often occurs when
the air is hot and humid.
Let's review.
Do we remember the
difference between
thunder and lightning?

Lightning
An intense burst of light in the sky
that is produced by electricity

Thunder
Caused by the sudden expanding of
the air around the path of a lightning
bolt; the loud rumbling sound you
hear after a lightning clap
What is
this called?
What is
this called?

Correct, this
is a tornado!
What is a
tornado?

It is a storm characterized
by strong winds in a whirling
motion. The cloud it creates
is shaped like a funnel.
What about
a hurricane?

It is a powerful storm that

forms over warm ocean
water with strong winds
and heavy rains.
Hurricanes are larger and
last longer than typhoons.
One of the reasons
for extreme weather
is climate change.

As global surface temperatures increase,

the more likely we will continue to
experience intense storms.
Do you think we
are seeing more
or fewer storms in
the past years?

Discuss your answer with your seatmate

by sharing your experiences.
