1 Overview Engineering Base
Electrical engineering with Engineering Base
The electrical engineering is used to specify the electrical infrastructure of the plant to be
designed.

This includes the location structures, which offer an overview of the spatial arrangement of
buildings, rooms and cabinets.
The electrical infrastructure contains all modules and devices required for operating the plant. It
contains the power supplies, the safety equipment and the controls.
Moreover connection information is required on items such as cable runs, cable data, terminal
blocks and their representation in terminal diagrams.
Among others, the following diagram types can be created:

page 9
Overview Engineering Base

Engineering Base components

Central database
In Engineering Base, all data is stored in a central database.
This can e.g. include different projects, equipment, plant structures, embedded Excel sheets or
customer-specific VBA programs.

You can work with several databases, but direct exchange or copying of data is only
possible within one database.

Engineering Base Explorer

The Engineering Base Explorer is the main tool used for creating and editing the data. It has all
functions necessary for comfortable management and editing of the planning data.
Graphic Editor MS-Visio
Graphic representation and editing is done in MS-Visio. For Engineering Base, it has been
extended by AUCOTEC AG and is linked to the database.
The graphic objects (shapes) are linked online to the database and are stored directly in the
diagrams.
Worksheets
In addition, so-called worksheets can also be used. They represent the data in the form of a list as
in a spreadsheet. The worksheets offer the same functionalities as the Engineering Base Explorer.
Objects can be created, edited and deleted.
Worksheets are recommended when large data volumes are to be edited.

web aucotec.com page 10

The Database Explorer
The main tool for project processing is the Database Explorer.

The navigation bar permits a rapid selection of objects and switching object trees in the Explorer.
It can be switched on/off via the View menu.
By means of the list buttons the view can easily be reduced to partial areas. The following views
are predefined:
• Projects (only the projects)
• Stencils (access to shapes)
• Catalogs (access to material data)
• Database (all)
From the context menu own list buttons can be created for a fast and easy access, for example the
project at work.
With the filter, special elements can be set to invisible in the explorer. With this functionality In huge
projects the data can be more clearly arranged.

page 11
Databases and Projects

2 Databases and Projects

Create projects
A new project is created in the Database Explorer under the system folder Projects.
The project dialog window contains the tabs System Attributes and Common Attributes.
• The dialog System Attributes is used to enter the project name and the comment.
• The tab Common Attributes can be used to e.g. enter company, contract or customer
data.
A "!" marks different projects with the same name.
New projects are created on the basis of so-called template projects. The name of the template
project used is proposed as the name of the new project.
If no project name is entered, then Engineering Base automatically uses the comment instead of
the project name for the display in the Database Explorer.

If neither a project name nor a comment is entered, the name is automatically

Project.

Every Engineering Base database contains the template project Standard. In EB EVU/Power the
template project EVU Template DIN 40719 or EVU Template IEC 81346 are used.

DIN 40719 or IEC 81346 Standard

This document describes both ways of working. Especially in the tasks there are
sometimes differences, the IEC Standard then is marked in red.

You can also define your own, company-specific template projects. For this
purpose just move or copy the respective projects into the system folder Project
Templates.

web aucotec.com page 12

Task 1: Create a new project

Specify the properties of the project

To specify the properties of a project, click in the Engineering Base Explorer with the right mouse
button on the project name and then on Properties in the context menu. The dialog window

For Projects according IEC the Designation Standards Use IEC Norm Indicate full reference
designation for items in Frame with “>” must be selected.
Default is the representation of the reference designation in the Long Form (-K1-Q01-S1-F01) if
the Short Form or the Dot Form are needed, the Central configuration must be changed.

web aucotec.com page 14

Setting a dictionary
Engineering Base offers the option to access standard texts organized in dictionaries when entering
texts.
The editing language is the language shown in the dialogs when the F3 key is pressed before
entering text.
The display language is used in the diagrams. It is possible to display several languages
simultaneously in the graphic.

How to specify a dictionary and the language:

1. In the Properties dialog for the project, click on Dictionary. The Dictionary dialog is
displayed.
2. In the line Primary Dictionary, click on the button [...] on the right. The dialog for
selecting a dictionary is opened.
3. Select the desired dictionary.
4. Activate the desired editing and display language(s).

If a diagram is opened in Visio, the project settings cannot be edited. The diagram
must be closed first.

page 15
Databases and Projects

Setting the catalog and the typical project for the project
Configuring the catalog
The Preferred Catalog contains general device master data that can be selected with this setting.
The Typical Project can be used to store Default diagrams for large devices. These diagrams are
copied into the working project via the Equipment Diagram Wizard, if the respective option is
selected.

How to configure the catalog

1. In the Engineering Base Explorer, click with the right mouse button on the project
name and then in the offered context menu on Properties. The dialog window Properties is
opened.
2. Under General, click on Catalogs.

3. In the line Preferred Catalog, use the button [...] to select the catalog EVU Catalog 67X.

A specification catalog or Pipe class Catalog is not selected; it is relevant only for Engineering Base
Instrumentation.

If a diagram is opened in Visio, the project settings cannot be edited. The diagram
must be closed first.

web aucotec.com page 16

Settings for the wiring
Enabling automatic wires
After selection of the checkbox Enable Automatic Wires, wires for all connections in the diagram
are automatically created. Each connection is stored in the project as unspecific wire in the folder
Automatic Wires under the folder Equipment. Prerequisite for this is that the connections link
two or more devices (unassociated shapes are insufficient).
The selection of the checkbox Enable Automatic Wires moreover checks all connections for
possible wiring problems. If a connection cannot be made with a given wire, you get a note with
information about the problem.

If you switch Enable Automatic Wires on, then only one person can work in the
project. If you wish to edit the project with several users simultaneously, then the
Automatic Wires can be created for each location as needed.

If you switch on the automatic wires retroactively, then you must execute the
function Create Automatic Wires in the context menu of the project.

Task: Project settings

1. Open the project settings of your project
2. Activate the Automatic Wires
3. Check/change:
Dictionary: EVU, language EN
Preferred catalog: EVU Catalog

page 17

Structure projects with folders

To get things straight, you can create folders, that may e.g. contain projects or groups of projects.
Except for structuring data, they have no other function in Engineering Base.

Task 2: Structure projects with folders

1. Click on the system folder Projects and use the context menu with New / Folder to first
create the folder AUCOTEC Projects.
2. While pressing and holding the left mouse button, move the demo and sample projects into
the new folder.
3. Under Projects, create the folder Training Projects.
4. In the Training Projects folder, create two new folders named Customer A and Customer
B.
5. Move the project TS Training 1 into the folder Training Projects / Customer A.
6. Set up a new button that reduces the display in the Engineering Base Explorer directly to
the project TS Training 1.

web aucotec.com page 18

General setup of a project according DIN Standard
A project contains all of the data of a planning job in a database. The basic structure is the same
for every project.
There are three essential folders that summarily contain all of the planning data. Each of these
folders represents an aspect of the planning job:
Equipments
In the Equipment folder, all structures are defined that have a physical aspect. This can e.g. be
locations, cabinets, equipment or cables used to realize a planning requirement.
Functions
Functions are logical structures used for specifying the planning tasks. It is e.g. possible to assign
all devices belonging to the supply side to a function Power Supply =PS.
Documents
This folder is used to create and manage all graphic representations for the project. These can e.g.
be circuit diagrams, layout diagrams, terminal diagrams or general and layout diagrams.

In the EB Power sample project and also for this seminar, functions are not used.

page 19
Databases and Projects

General setup of a project according IEC Standard

If you activate the option Activate location folder in the project settings you get an additional
folder for locations.

In that case should be in the Equipment folder no location structures. Therefore Units have to be
used. Units can be interpreted as a collection of devices combined to an unit without having a
specific material reference.
All elements there get the prefix for devices or logical structures.

web aucotec.com page 20

3 Create Structures
Create folders and locations
Generally in the planning phase you start with structuring the locations. This structuring proceeds
from coarse to fine.
In Engineering Base, units (locations) and equipments can already be created and arbitrarily
structured before there is any drawing.
An unit is created in the folder Equipment.

Task 4 DIN: Create folders and various units.

1. Open the Equipment folder and select New in the context menu.
2. Create the structure as shown in the graphic.

The bay, in the example =J01, is created in EB Power as unit, type bay.

page 21
Create Structures

Task 4 IEC: Create folders and various units.

1. Open the Equipment folder and select New in the context menu.
2. Create the structure as shown in the graphic.

web aucotec.com page 22

Structure documents in drawings and sheets
Drawings and sheets
Drawings and sheets are created and managed in the folder Documents.

Task 5 DIN: Create drawings

1. Select New / Drawing in the context menu of the Documents folder. The dialog for
entering the drawing data is opened.
For energy distribution, it is usual to name the drawings according the bay names.
Diagrams spanning several bays are typically assigned to the fictitious bay 00.
2. Create all drawings you see below.

page 23
Create Structures

Task 5 IEC: Create drawings and folders

web aucotec.com page 24

Task 6 DIN: Create and open sheets for a drawing
For the creation of a new sheet, Engineering Base offers a selection list with predefined sheet
templates. The selected template is copied with all settings, the form and possibly already placed
shapes (symbols). The sheet templates are stored project-related in the folder Templates /
Sheets / Favorites.

page 25

web aucotec.com page 26

4 Using Graphic Elements in Visio
The graphic view in Visio
Upon opening a newly-created sheet in the graphics window, the Microsoft Visio 2010 drawing
environment is shown. It shows the menus, the menu bars and the empty drawing sheet with the
form.
Important sheet settings:
• Grid setting 4 mm (tab Engineering Base / Snap & Grid)
• Align & Glue (tab View / Visual Aids)
• Ruler settings (tab View / Ruler)
• Units of measurement (tab Design / Page Setup)
• Page scale (tab Design / Page Setup)

The sheet-related Explorer

If you display the Engineering Base window next to the Visio window, then the additional sheet-
related Explorer does not make sense.
How to permanently switch off the sheet-related Explorer:
In the Engineering Base Explorer, select the item Options under Extras.
Remove the tick at Show Engineering Base Explorer in Visio Window.

page 27
Using Graphic Elements in Visio

Enable AutoSave Diagrams: Use this dialog to specify whether the sheet is to be saved
automatically and if so in what intervals.

Form sheet entries

Texts shown in form sheet may originate from different objects:
• Project texts
• Document texts
• Sheet texts
• Texts from the associated location/device
• Texts from the associated function

web aucotec.com page 28

Sheet parameters
If you copy the sheet into the project folder Templates / Sheets / Favorites,
then it is available with all of its settings for future sheets.

Task 7: Specify sheet parameters

1. Open sheet =J01 / A03 respectively –J1Q01&EAB / B02 graphically.
2. Change the grid spacing to 4 mm using Snap & Grid (tab Engineering Base)

3. Deactivate Ruler Subdivisions in the menu Snap & Glue, and activate Grid. (Tab View,
Visual Aids)

4. Switch over to the tab Advanced and set the snap strength for the grid to a high value.

web aucotec.com page 30

Use drawing tools in Visio
The use and editing of graphic elements (lines, rectangles, circles, ellipses etc.) is also effected
in the same way as with other Microsoft Office applications.
The Drawings tools button in the Start menu bar displays or suppresses the corresponding
toolbar with the usual graphic functions.
The properties of graphic elements such as line width, line pattern, line color are specified or
changed via the format toolbar or the context menu.
In contrast to Engineering Base shapes, graphic elements drawn with Visio do not possess a
logic of their own like item designations etc. and are not further processed by Engineering Base.
Visio shapes contained in Visio can also be used.

5 Visio Shapes and Unit Groups
Visio shapes in combination with device and unit frames
Visio shapes
For creating and editing general layout drawings you can use Visio standard shapes. Appropriate
Visio shapes already exist for many diagram types.

In contrast to EB shapes, Visio graphic elements and Visio shapes do not possess a
logic and are not further processed.

Device and unit groups

Each Engineering Base object can be displayed by any diagram type. In our example a unit
(cabinet) is to be represented by a rectangle.
The graphic is then associated with the object. Changes may be carried out both within the graphic
and with the Explorer, with the same result.

page 33

In the graphics window, you can work with layers.

The elements assigned to a layer automatically get the properties of the respective layer.
These can e.g. be:
• Color
• Visibility
• Read-only

Engineering Base uses a number of special layers that should not be changed particularly for circuit
diagram pages.

Further information is available in the online help under "Layers".

Drop cable ducts and mounting rails
Cable ducts
Cable ducts are defined by dropping special EB shapes.
These special EB shapes are available under Stencils / Devices / Cable Ducts
These EB shapes can be linked to the database and can be changed manually or by specifying the
height and the width.
For precise positioning of the cable ducts in the cabinet layout, a suitable distance of cabinet
shapes and grid should be specified via the menu tabs Engineering Base and Snap & Grid.
For the following steps, a distance of 50 mm has proved useful (use symmetrical settings).

If a cable duct is to be aligned vertically, it must be rotated via the menu tab Start
and (arrange) Position / Align Shapes.

Mounting rails
Mounting rails are available under Stencils / Devices / Mounting Rail in the Layout stencil.

1. Consider the structure and text of the cable -W101. Why is the structure locked?
2. Start the cable wizard via the context menu to get an overview of the number and kind of
the wires. Why are changes impossible?

Wires and wire properties

The automatically created wires cannot be directly modified, such like changing color or cross-
section. For this purpose the wires must either be represented graphically and manually labeled or
labeled automatically with the add-in Copy data from potential to wire.
If the add-in is active, the wire attributes are determined as follows:
• If a single wire should have special properties, it must be represented graphically and
labeled.
• If wire properties are defined at the potential, they are adopted to all wires of the network.
• If a wire is not shown and moreover the potential is not labeled, then the wire properties
are taken from the project dialog.

11 Worksheets and Reports
Create lists with worksheets and reports
Worksheets
A worksheet is a table that shows data in different columns. It can be used to edit specially large
data volumes quickly and simply as with EXCEL.
In a worksheet, objects can be created, edited, deleted or placed with drag & drop in the
simultaneously opened graphics window.
You can use the worksheet to add or delete columns or to filter and sort data. Moreover individually
modified worksheets can be stored as templates to use them again.
Several worksheets may be opened simultaneously.

Worksheets embedded in the graphic

All worksheets can be embedded in the graphic. It is for instance possible to integrate tabular
overviews into the diagrams.

Reports
A report is nearly the same as an embedded worksheet. In contrast to embedded worksheet, it
may comprise several pages. Engineering Base shows only the first page direct, for printing or
output via PDF all pages are shown.

Create additional documents with reports

A report is nearly the same as an embedded worksheet. In contrast to embedded worksheets, it

may comprise several pages. Engineering Base shows only the first page directly. For printing or
output via PDF all pages are shown.
Reports can be stored as templates in the project and re-used.

A report should always be printed with the print function of the Engineering Base
Explorer and not via Visio.
Only in this way multipage reports are completely printed.

12 Create Equipment Diagrams

Equipment diagrams for standard devices
Overview
Equipment diagrams represent on the one hand the technical data, and on the other hand the
complete graphics of the devices. Moreover they contain cross-references to the partial
representations in the circuit diagram.
For several identical devices (materials and accessories), a graphic shape is created containing
the technical data and the complete graphic representation.
A cross-reference shape is dropped directly underneath for all similarly devices. The cross-
references to the partial representations in the circuit diagram are automatically shown at this
shapes.

Equipment diagrams are automatically created with the List of Equipment wizard.

Precondition
The wizard must be able to find the corresponding shapes. For this purpose they must be stored in
special stencils or defined as preferred shape. How the shapes have to be named and where they
are expected, will be described on the next pages.

web aucotec.com page 88

Equipment diagrams for complex devices single sheet
For complex devices, like protection relays, it is usual to figure the internal wiring with one or
several pages. For automatically creating there are two possibilities:
Via shapes
Similar with the procedure for standard devices, shapes (in this case a shape named DEV3xxx)
will searched and automatically dropped. This shapes must be defined as preferred master
shape of the device and may fill a complete page.

Via typical
A typical project must be assigned to the project. In this typical project, the devices are stored
together with the assigned sheets. The wizard copies the associated diagrams of the corresponding
device from the typical project and renames the copied diagrams.

To access the typical project, it must be assigned in the project properties.

Create Equipment Diagrams

How to find Equipment diagram shapes?

The shapes are in search of a certain hierarchy:

Standard devices
The graphic and the cross-reference symbols can be defined as preferred shapes of the device in
the catalog. In this case it does not matter where the shapes are stored. The names of the shapes
must start with the prefix DEV1 respectively DEV2.
If no preferred shapes are defined the graphic shape is searched in the stencil List of Equipment
under the device type. It must be named DEV1.
Because the cross-reference shape may be the same for different device types, first the wizard
looks in the stencil Common / List of Equipment, it must be named DEV2. If the shape is not
there, the wizard looks in the device-specific stencil List of Equipment. Also there the name of
the shape must be DEV2.

Complex devices via shapes (standard)

The shapes for complex devices must always be defined as preferred shapes of the device. If you
want one single shape for a device name it DEV3*. If you need a combination of different shapes
you must work with shapes named DEV4* ore DEV5*, combined with DEV2*-Shapes. With this
systematics you can create several result sheets.
advantage disadvantage
Same systematics as for standard devices, Relative slow, because the automatic dropping
realized completely via shapes of large shapes is time-consuming

Complex devices via typical (optional working method)

In the Short Description the device must contain the text Typical and must have an
unambiguous material number. In the typical project, the name of the device must correspond to
this material number.
advantage disadvantage
Existing complete detail diagrams can directly More administration work (append
used typical project, material number must
match)

Create Layout Diagrams

13 Create Layout Diagrams

Layout Diagram in Engineering Base
Layout diagrams can be created at any time, independed from circuit diagrams.
It is important, that the material data are assigned to the devices, because device dimensions are
used to get the size of the dynamic shapes.

Devices in the Layout Diagram

For some device types exist specific layout shapes in the stencil Layout. For displaying the devices
you can use that shapes or black box shapes from the common-stencil. The black box shapes
(LS_001 to LS_004) are variable in the size and fit automatically to the dimensions of the devices.

web aucotec.com page 96

Task 42: Drop Layout Shapes in the Layout Diagram
For dropping the Layout Shapes you can use a worksheet where the column Layout Reference is
displayed.
1. In the drawing folder =J01 respectively –J1-Q01&ELU, open the sheet A04 respectively
U01.
2. Open the worksheet Devices and position it above the cabinet sheet. Add the column
Layout Reference, then you can see, which devices are already dropped.
3. Activate the stencil window with the icon and select the stencil Common.
4. Select a device from the list and drag & drop the shape LS_001 on the cabinet drawing.

It is possible to select and drop several layout shapes in one step.

15 Shape Design
Shapes and master shapes
More then 2000 IEC-compliant shapes are delivered with Engineering Base. Nevertheless the
creating of new shapes is described at the following sheets.
Shapes are used in the drawing sheets.
Master shapes are available in the stencils. They can be used for several projects.

Open the shape design

The shape design is opened via the context menu of a master shape or shape in the diagram,
function Open with Visio.
The shape design view is opened. This view has a special tree that contains stencils and shapes for
shape design.

Elements of the shape design

A shape consists of free graphic elements, like lines, rectangles or text, placeholders for device
attribute texts and connection pins.
Each shape has got a reference point (ORIGIN) where it is fixed during dragging.

Structure of the shapes for Equipment Diagrams

For all devices the shapes for the Equipment Diagram must have the shape type Equipment
Diagram.

Structure of the graphic shape

As for other shapes, the material data is placed with text blocks for the technical data.

Display of the sub-devices

The automatic display of the sub-devices is realized with a dynamic area and matching shapes.
The dynamic area specifies the range and the direction for the display of the shapes for sub-
devices. The shapes are dragged from the folder Shapes for Dynamic Area into the dynamic
area. The dynamic area expands automatically.

Display of the accessories

The accessories are also specified with a dynamic area, that table expands downward. The
Accessories shape shows the data in tabular form.

Structure of the cross-reference shape

Every device with the same technical data is shown in the Equipment diagram with a cross-
reference shape in the form of a line. It shows the item designations and the cross-references for
the representations of the sub-devices.

Modify the cross reference shape DEV2 for basic devices

Structure of the cross reference shape
The shape needs a text block with a peer to peer cross reference to organize the cross reference
from the main circuit diagram shape of the device.
The cross references to the sub devices are organized via a dynamic area. The dynamic area
contains for any sub device type a specific sub shape.
Such a sub shape is created in the shape processing window. It contains just a rectangle, a text
block for a cross reference, an origin- and offset point.

web aucotec.com page 106

Task 50: Create a new sub shape for the cross reference shape
In the following a new sub shape from the type output is created and nested in the cross
reference shape. With this new cross reference shape it is possible to show also cross references to
outputs of automation devices in the Equipment diagram.
1. Choose in the stencil view under Devices / Common / List of Equipment the master
shape DEV2 and open it with Visio.
• the dynamic area is existing
• the most shapes for typical sub types like contactors are existing

• You see only the origin- and
• offset point, they are overlapping
5. To define the width of the cell move the offset point to the right.
6. Drag and drop the text block TB_005 for the cross reference.
7. Draw a rectangle like in the figure and close the shape processing.
8. Drag and drop the new shape into the dynamic area of the cross reference shape.
9. Close the shape processing and test the new functionality.

page 107
Shape Design

Design of the Equipment diagram shapes for complex devices

If one shape (maximum full sheet size) is enough to show a complex device, a shape with the
name DEV3* can be used. It shows the material data, the overview of the sub-devices and the
cross-references to the pins of the circuit diagram symbols.
The block for the material data is dropped in the shape with the standard material data shape.
(see there).
The overview of the sub devices is a pure graphic without further connection to the database.

The graphic does not have to be newly drawn in Visio. It can also be imported as
DXF, bitmap or JPG file.

The passiv pins have a special peer cross-reference, which creates a cross-reference to the
corresponding pin in the circuit diagram.

16 Dictionaries
Dictionaries and dictionary texts
Dictionaries are used to store texts for translations. Texts from dictionaries can be shown in several
languages in the diagrams.
The dictionary and the languages, used in a project, are defined in the Project settings under
Dictionary settings. All dictionaries are organized in the folder Dictionaries in the database view.

There are three different types of dictionaries:

System dictionary: This dictionary contains texts used by the program (system texts). The user
has no access. However, the texts of the dictionary can be used with Strg+Shift+F3.
Database dictionary: This dictionary contains texts used by the database. It is selected and set
for the database in File / Properties / Dictionary.

Project dictionaries: These contain project-related texts. It is possible either to work with a
company-specific dictionary for several projects, or with a project specific dictionary.

Master Data and Catalogs

17 Master Data and Catalogs

Basics about master data and catalogs
Device master data includes informations about technical and commercial data, such as
manufacturer, supplier, price, catalog number, etc. and is managed in catalogs.
The system handles in the master data also substructures and functionalities (e.g. contact mirrors,
device options) of the device.
Folders can be used for further grouping and structuring.
There are several possibilities to create additional master data in Engineering Base:
• Manual entry
• Reading in data via the XLS or CSV format
• Import of Engineering Base libraries
• Using the ECAD Interface
• Import of existing data from ELCAD or RUPLAN

Catalogs can be exported and imported like normal projects via the menu File / Export Project or
File / Import Project. In the folder Catalogs several catalogs can be managed.
