Repair Boom—Minimal Damage
Before performing any carbon fiber repair procedures,
verify that you are familiar with safety and handling
procedures. Make it a habit to practice the following safety
precautions when working with carbon fiber materials and
tools:

• Dress appropriately to protect skin from exposure to
sanding and grinding dust, resins and solvents, and
carbon fiber particles.
• Wear gloves when handling carbon fiber mat, resins
and solvents, and cutting/grinding tools.
• Wear approved eye protection and a respirator when
using cutting/grinding tools or compressed air, and
when handling resins, solvents, and adhesives.
1. Park the machine on a flat, level surface.

CAUTION: Approximate weight of the boom


section is 614 kg (1355 lb).

IMPORTANT: Do not support the inner boom section


from the center of the cross tie bracket. Apply
jack-stands at support locations (A).

2. Unfold the boom and lower onto suitable jack-stands
placed at intermediate joints and ends of the boom.
3. Shut off engine and remove the key.
4. When necessary, clean the machine of pesticides.
(See Clean Vehicle of Hazardous Pesticides in Section
10, Group 05.)

5. Using 120 grit sandpaper remove loose or damaged


fibers that are in the damaged area (A) on the boom.
IMPORTANT: Only sand the paint. Do not remove
any carbon fiber material.

6. Using 220 grit sandpaper remove the paint from the N163823 —UN—18OCT23
surrounding area (B) that will be used for blending
filler material.
7. Using a lint-free cloth, clean the mating surface of
damage area of the boom with denatured alcohol.
8. Ensure that the damaged surface area is clean and dry.

9. Apply automotive body filler to the area, blend as
needed.

10. Allow body filler to cure per the instructions on the (undamaged)
product then sand smooth.
11. Paint to match the rest of the boom using TY25638
Black Medium Gloss Paint as required.
