The meeting of

two cultures

@teacherfulrd
On January 20, 1486
Christopher Columbus decided
to ask the Catholic Monarchs to
help him start a great
adventure.

@teacherfulrd
Christopher Columbus' plan
was to find a new trade route
across the Atlantic Ocean.

@teacherfulrd
On August 3, 1492, the expedition
of Christopher Columbus began. It
consisted of three ships: the Santa
Maria, the Pinta and the Niña.

For this trip
Christopher
Columbus took
with him some
important
tools such as a
map, a
compass and a
spyglass.

@teacherfulrd
Upon his arrival to this island
Columbus, he baptized it with the
name of "La Hispaniola" and was
surprised by its incredible natural
beauty.

@teacherfulrd
The Spanish found the island
inhabited by a large population of
Taino Indians, who called it Hayti
that means high ground.

@teacherfulrd
The Taínos lived in houses called
bohíos and collected food such as
corn, guava and yucca; with which
they prepared the cazabe.

@teacherfulrd
They also hunted animals for food and
fished using spears and small boats
called canoes.

@teacherfulrd
When Christopher Columbus
returned to Spain he presented
the kings with the gold and the
things he brought from our
island and they marveled.

@teacherfulrd
That’s how two different
cultures first met over 500
years ago on our island.
