Dia de la Hispanidad

• According to the Julian
calendar, Christopher Columbus
set sail from the port of Palos de
la Frontera in South-west Spain
on August 3, 1942. He landed
on an island that is now part of
the Bahamas in the Caribbean
on October 12 1942. The
anniversary of this day is
marked as Hispanic day in
Spain.
The celebration

• The king of Spain supervises the raising of the


Spanish flag in the center of Madrid. Then there is
a military parade after the raising of the flags. This
is a day off for workers and a day off for students.
Christopher Columbus
• Columbus was born in 1451, in the
Republic of Genoa (Italy). Christopher
Columbus sailed the ocean blue in1492.
With the help of Muslim stronghold in
Granada, the monarchs agreed to finance
his expedition.
America is discovered!

• Christopher columbus
discovered America in 1492
Columbus led his three ships -
the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa
Maria - out of the Spanish port
of Palos on August 3, 1492. His
destination was Asia but instead
he discover a new world.
