These American machines are now crewed by Iraqis, sporting Iraqi numbers and insig- nia, and soldier alongside T-72 and Type 69 tanks in the ight against the insurgency and rebels in Northern Iraq ‘and the Islamic State. This idea served as an inspiration for ‘an imaginary similar chain of events in the recent Syrian conflict, when Russia started to back the failing regime. Back when | started to build the model for the present ar- ticle, the Russians have only started to send Sukhoi planes and helicopters, and sending ground vehicles seemed out of the question. Curiously enough, they started to deliver ‘modern ¥:90 tanks to bolster the defenses of their airbase in Syria, but also to reinforce the Syrian Army with newer ‘and more effective tanks than the old T-72AVs or T-55AM- 8 | THEWEATHERING M TAKOM.2029-15 TAKOM Vs. Of course, the T-14 tank based on the Armata platform is still a prototype in development stages, and the model seen in the 2015 Moscow Victory Day Parade will almost certainly undergo numerous changes during development, probably including a different and bulkier modular armor package of the turret. But, | thought it will be fun imaging "What would have happened if the Russians had sent their newest T-14s, as seen in TY, to help their Syrian allies?” Most probably the Syrians would have applied some kind of disruptive camouflage, because their silhouette makes them highly visible from afar. And of course Syrian tactical symbols and numerals would have been painted on too. The opportunities offered by this kind of crazy ideas -but not completely beyond the realm of possibility- are almost endless. Welcome to an alternative outcome of the Syrian conflict. Amongst these concepts is the Haunebu, a disc shaped flying object that would easily sweep the skies clear of allied bomb- fers and fighters, and who's long range capabilities would bring terror upon cities as distant as Miami and Moscow. A\limited number of these craft were built and tested ~ and even a few brief combat engagements over northern Germany in late April 1945. However, the quick pace of the allied advance prevented these crafts from ever being Ut into full production, thus never fulfilling the dream. The theme of "what if” is exciting as it allow us to stretch out and build something a little bit different from the usual topics. As for the Hanuebu, apart from a few concept sketches there are no reliable sources as to the actual nature of this craft, let alone any photographs! | will use this “fortunate” lack of information to my advantage and allow my imagination full reign to create one of these crafts, abandoned; post-war Luftwaffe UFO, circa 1952. One of the earliest projects to foster that early trust was "Project X-Pol” which was NATO parlance for ross Pollination. The idea was the preceding US President Reagan's to exchange a squadron each of fighters in order that each side may evaluate each other's aviation technology and maybe, enter into a joint manufacturing ven- ture some day in the future, The MiG-29 and F-16 were chosen from the WS and USAF. Gorbachev had wanted to ex- change a squadron of Yak-38 Forgers with the UK's Royal Navy and theit Sea Harrier who had recently fared superbly in the racant Falkland’s ‘War however the then Prime Minister Margaret ‘Thatcher had blocked the Idea. So Gorbachev ‘again turned to the US and in an extraordinary example of trust allowed the brand the new Su- 33 “Sea” Flanker to be exchanged for a squad- ron of F-14’s. Russia had recently converted its brand new Fleet carrier to a steam catapult RING MAGAZINE / WHAT IF and arrestor wires and with little modification the F-14 was deemed compatible. The Tomcats served with distinction and with their power and performance were loved by their crews. Certain modifications were necessary, Russian weapons were adapted to fit along with the fire control system. In order to keep some measure of compatibility, the seats were exchanged for Russian examples and this meant all the Rus- sian flight gear could be used simplifying main- tenance. In 2012 the F-14s were retired. In their place was the new Boeing-MiG-47 Shershen (Russian for Hornet), that joint venture first proposed by Ronal Reagan all those years before. When it occurred to me that Tcouldn’t simply make it up, the idea of building a “what iff model became all the more appealing. So. when Jamie Haggo and | had finished discussing a credible background story to explain why Russian and US combat aircraft had ended up being flown, in significant numbers, by the en- emy they were design to engage, the challenge of creating this believable alternate reality tured out to be as stimu- lating mentally as it was practically. THE WEATHERING MAGAZINE / WHAT IF SUS NAMY VF Created using the Academy 1:48 Su-30MK Flanker 1:48 (Item 12223) -B4 “THE In my version of realty, the USN took charge @f 4 squad rons of Su-27 Flankers, which they employed as dedicated counter tactics deyalonment platforms. The airframe was employed to explore the limits of the flightenvelope and to familiarise aircrews with the handling characteristics of the Flanker. Consequently. the aircraft was operated in a clean configuration because ‘compatible weapons had not at that point been supplied by the USSR and the USN saw little value in conducting the complex modifications necessary to integrate US missiles. It’s both fun and practice to fight off the boredom. This project is to be pert of the ongoing theme that I've chosen and decided to pursue: that of the world of UCRONIA, or ‘Alternate His- tory’. A parallel reality to ours, seen through mechanical subjects, straddling different eras, technological hybrids borrowed from his- tory and revisited though a Retro-futuristic lens, not exactly science- fiction, but rather an alternate history in which past, present and future merge to create vehicles both plausible and impossible, con- structed using materials and technique historically accurate to their ‘time period, whilst simultaneously incorporating some distinctly ‘un- usual’ features. By now | am firmly convinced that in my own style of model-making, artistic licence may be applied to aesthetics and func- tion, but not to materials, colours, context and mechanical details... a fact that has sometimes meant I have to respect standards which, are far more rigid and inflexible than those I follow when wor so-called ‘classic’ models. But back to the model itself; as Italy marked its 100 year anniversary since the start of the First World War, | decided to make my own personal tribute to this great tagedy by creating a Dieselpunk ver- sion of the iconic British Mark IV tank, re-imagined as a huge, bipedal mecha. 1 eventually chose to include a character, positioned alongside the mecha, within the setting of a bomb-scarred trench, so as to add dre- ma to the scene while stil showing respect and conveying the human side to the horrendous global tragedy. 52 ( THE WEATHERING MAGAZINE / WHAT IF oo A sigifcent amount of the mecha is med of forex (expanded.
