APPLICATION OF TRAVELBEE’S THEORY

Using Travelbee’s human to human relationship model, the interaction process of Nurse Luz
towards Joana’s situation can be applied as:

Original Encounter
Joana, a 25-year-old lady, sought therapy at a psychiatric outpatient facility.

Emerging Identities
Both the nurse and the patient are aware of the other's peculiar behavior. According to
the nurse, the patient had a happy childhood, is a happy, devoted daughter to her parents, and
adores her sister. Joana is a devout girl with a loving heart, since her family is involved in
Catholic activities, and as a result, she has a large number of friends. The patient, on the other
hand, believes Luz is a real person because she feels secure and comfortable around her.

Empathy
The client then tells her experience, claiming that her fear of touch began while she was
sleeping at a friend's place because, as night fell, her friend began to caress her in a way that
Joana misunderstood for erotic, leading her to become frightened and guilty.

Sympathy
The nurse detects her client's pain after hearing her patient's circumstances and desires
to ease the cause of the patient's suffering. Despite her caution, the client tried everything she
could to gather the facts so she could aid her in offering what is known as emotional support.

Rapport
Luz was able to offer the patient with the nursing interventions she required by gaining
trust and questioning her. As a consequence, she gained Joana's trust, and the patient was able
to communicate her trust and confidence in the nurse.
