Arch Builders
Introduction

Generally recognized as the primary text of the modern recovery movement, the
book titled Alcoholics Anonymous (commonly referred to as The Big Book) has
spawned an international fellowship numbering in the millions. The simple AA 12
Step process for spiritual development helps alcoholics and others to recover “from
a seemingly hopeless state of mind and body” (xxxi Forward Dover Publications First
edition Alcoholics Anonymous) and a “pitiful and incomprehensible demoralization”
(Big Book p30). Symbolic imagery that describes building a spiritual arch is used

analogy have been distilled and summarized herein so that they may be used as an
additional resource along with the Big Book and other AA literature, to help people

Arch Builders may be useful to communicate the “path to freedom” to newcomers

seeking recovery from addiction, as a resource for sponsors and others in working
with recovering individuals, as a 12 Step workshop or meeting format with groups of
recovering people and as a general resource for all those seeking to strengthen their
personal spiritual development. Also, it is strongly recommended on page 87 of the
Big Book to “be quick to see where religious people are right. Make use of what they
offer”. Therefore, the reader is encouraged to recognize that the AA principles and
the concepts in Arch Builders are Biblically based from the earliest foundation of the
fellowship. Thus, Arch Builders may be a powerful companion to Bible studies and
other organized religious pursuits aimed at personal spiritual development.

1) Code of the fellowship: Love and Tolerance of Others (BB 84)
Any building project, if it is to be solid and pass the test of time, must comply with a certain code
that has been established through experience and the evidence of past success.
“Love and Tolerance of Others”PZZ[H[LKVUWHNLVM[OL)PN)VVRHZ“our code”. This code of
the fellowship, suggests the way in which we build upon our foundation of helping others, that is,
with “Love and Tolerance”.

many other ways, the cumulative experience, strength and hope of the fellowship are offered free-
ly in this foundational spirit of Helping Others.

An entire chapter, “Working With Others” is dedicated to this topic in the Big Book, so the
importance of service to our fellow man is a clear emphasis of the suggested path to freedom. One

vital role in your own recovery. Actually, he may be helping you more than you are helping him…
suggest how important it is for him to place the welfare of other people ahead of his own.” Ad-
ditionally, the chapter “Working With Others” (BB pg. 89) begins: “ Practical experience shows
that nothing will so much insure immunity from drinking as intensive work with other alcoholics. It
works when other activities fail.”

Whether the still suffering person has a day or a decade of sobriety, another recovering member
of the fellowship can uniquely help and be helped in the process. As stated on page 20 of the Big
Book “Our very lives as ex-problem drinkers, depend upon our constant thought of others, and
how we may help meet their needs”. This foundational principle grows and strengthens the fellow-
ship every time two or more people interact in the spirit of Helping Others.

is joined to the foundation of recovery by two cornerstones that focus on faith and
unity. Faith demonstrated by a belief that a power greater than ourselves exists, and
unity with that higher power, our creator, through a living personal companionship
with Him.

meaning of “recovery”. We are all Prodigal sons and daughters returning home to
the delight of Our Father. We arrive empty handed, but are welcomed as heirs to all
that He has if only we seek, ask and are open honest and willing.

4) The Arch: (BB 62 & 75)

The building of the “arch through which we will walk a free man at last”(BB p75)
is achieved by the orderly placement of twelve stones, which represent the twelve
steps of recovery. Arch is the root of the word architecture. Although an arch is
among the strongest of architectural structures, it needs support during the construc-
tion phase before all of the “stones” are in place. Fortunately, there is ample scaf-
folding and bracing, and a kit of spiritual tools to aid in the construction.

The recovery fellowship itself provides the scaffolding and supporting bracing
structure for the recovering person by “sharing their experience strength and hope”
(see AA preamble). Tools are also needed in a building project, and spiritual tools
are required for our spiritual arch (see BB p25 & p95). The following are 12 such
tools that are commonly suggested by veterans of recovery programs, along with as-
sociated practical words of wisdom that are sometimes associated with these tools.

7) Attend Meetings: How often? Ask yourself: How often did you drink?

each in the BB and 12&12.

Building Stones: Working the Steps

With the scaffolding in place and our tools at the ready, the construction begins.

text and the “Virtues” or Principles that are sometimes associated with each step as
they appeared in various AA related literature like Grapevine and other sources.

7
Honesty
Step 1. (Pg 30) We admitted that we were powerless over alcohol, and that our lives had become unmanageable.

Hope
Step 2. (Pg 56 & 60 ABC’s) Came to believe that a power greater then ourselves, could restore us to sanity.

Faith
Step 3. (Pg 60) Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God, as we understood Him.

Courage
Step 4. (Pg 64) Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

Integrity
Step 5. (Pg 72) Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

Willingness
Step 6. (Pg 76) Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

Humility
Step 7. (Pg 76) Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

Brotherly Love
Step 8. (Pg 76) Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

Justice
Step 9. (Pg 76) Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or
others.

Perseverance
Step 10. (Pg 84) Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.

Spirituality
Step 11. (Pg 85) Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God we understood
Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

Service
Step 12. (Pg 89 & all Ch.7) Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps, we tried to carry this message
to other alcoholics and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

our recovery will be put in place to secure and solidify our spiritual arch as a lasting
spiritual structure for living.

5) Keystone: (BB p 62 & 63)

The summit of the arch, the Keystone, is regarded as holding all the other pieces in
place. In our personal spiritual program, as well as the fellowship at large, this key-
stone is a complete dependence upon and trust in God and His will for us as stated
VUWHNL VM[OLIPNIVVR!

“God was going to be our director. He is the Principal, we are his agents. He is the
Father, we are his children. Most good ideas are simple, and this concept was the
keystone of the new and triumphant arch through which we passed to freedom.
When we sincerely took such a position, all sorts of remarkable things followed. We
had a new employer. Being all-powerful. He provided what we needed, if we kept
close to him and performed his work well.”

6) Freedom:

The arch is an architectural structure that is designed to support the weight

above it. It protects the inner space of the archway from the destruction that
would be associated with its structural collapse. Our spiritual arch shields us
from the destruction of addiction and the “Bedevilments” listed on page 52 of
the Big Book. The arch, that is the 12 steps and the foundation stone, corner-
stones and the keystone as laid out in the Big Book, result in the “Twelve Prom-
ises” as stated on page 83 of the BB, replacing the “Bedevilments”.

7) A “WE” Fellowship:

The twelve Steps start with the word “we”. The arch structure is a strong one, but it cre-
ates horizontal pressure and will collapse without abutments on either side. It cannot stand
alone. Many arch structures are build in a series, with one arch following another, connect-
ed to one another, providing the critical support that allows the structures to remain strong.

The “We” in the recovery fellowship is comprised of millions of individuals, building

their personal arches to freedom, inter-dependant and “…united under one God, with

certain aspects of the Old Testament Biblical scripture. This process of interpreting the scripture
resulted in an overall spiritual philosophy that would be associated with that particular special

learning their teachings directly from them as a way of life.

The Alcoholics Anonymous program has roots

in a previous Christian / Bible based fellowship
known as, The Oxford Group. The steps and
principles of AA can therefore be traced rather
closely to scripture in both the Old and New Tes-
tament of the Holy Bible. The primary author of
the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous was one
of the co-founders of AA, Bill Wilson. Bill wrote
[OPZIVVR^P[OZ[YVUNPUÅ\LUJLMYVT[OLV[OLY
co-founder, Dr. Bob Smith.

“ But we were convinced that the answer to our problems was in the Good Book…. the parts we found
absolutely essential were Sermon on the Mount, the 13th Chapter of Corinthians, and the Book of James...
We already had the basic ideas, though not in terse and tangible form. We got them, as I said, as a result
of our study of the Good Book, We must have had them. Since then, we have learned from experience
that they are very important in maintaining sobriety.”
(Dr. Bob Smith, Co-Founder AA. Excerpt from AA Pamphlet The Co-Founders of Alcoholics Anonymous # P-53, page 13 & 14)

The suggested premise is, therefore, that the modern day recovery movement, which evolved
from the AA program, is essentially a Yoke, or interpretation of Biblical Scripture and the teachings
or “Yoke” of Jesus Christ. Jesus therefore is the ultimate spiritual sponsor and the recovery “princi-
ples” are actually His teachings.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and

Millions of alcoholics and others that are beset by crippling addictions of all kinds have found
recovery through this “Yoke”. We present herein, a correlation of the main principles of AA and
their Biblical sources and underpinnings.* For those that are already yoked to Christ as Christian
believers, the wonderful fellowship of AA will be enhanced by the unlimited power of the actual
Word of God in association with these AA principals. For those who are not as far down the path

9) Summary:

The Arch Building project is an adventure of a lifetime. As with any structure, once
built, it requires ongoing attention and maintenance. All of the components are in-
ter-dependant and must be kept in place for the structure to remain standing strong.
In summary, the 12 key concepts for Arch Builders are:

1) Foundation Stone: Helping Others

2) Code of Fellowship: Love and Tolerance of Others
3) Cornerstone #1: Find a Higher Power
4) Cornerstone #2: Be in companionship with God
5) Arch Support: Fellowship
6) Kit of Spiritual Tools: Aid in All Phases of Construction and Maintenance
7) Twelve Steps: 12 Stones of the Arch
8) Keystone: God is Supreme Director, Principle and Father
