8- Artevia Slabs Installation and Protection

8.1. General
It should be well understood that the Artevia slabs lies under the category
of sensitive decorative works, thus it should not be treated like traditional
concrete slabs under any conditions. This is why LafargeHolcim highly
recommends that the Artevia works start after all other construction
activities are finished.
Generally, it should be considered that the Artevia Exposed finish
slabs are not designed to accept any wheel loads before 3 to 4 weeks
of placement, i.e.(cars, trucks… etc).

8.2. Installation and Protections before and during works

a) After compacting the subgrades, areas where Artevia slabs are to
be placed should be closed, or surrounded by a sufficient
protective cordon or fence, this is in order to protect the
compacted subgrade from damage and to avoid rework loops by
the client in preparing the subgrade.
b) In case of placing by chutes, LafargeHolcim is responsible of
delivering the Artevia concrete in truck-mixers to the nearest
accessible placement point, accordingly it is necessary that the
client provides accessible roads that ends at the placement point
(formwork box).
c) In case of inaccessible placement points, it should be agreed on
the method of transporting the concrete from the truck mixer to
the placement point, i.e.(pump, crane, loader, dumper and labor
…etc), this should be considered extra.
d) In case of placing concrete using LafargeHolcim pump, the client should
provide a safe place for the pump centralization. In such case the client
should provide accessible roads that end at the pumping point as well.
8.3. Protections after placing

a) After placing and before applying the sealer, no type of

traffic is permitted over the Artevia slabs (even foot traffic).
b) Freshly poured Artevia Slabs should be strictly protected from
any type of traffic before washing and sealing. It should also be
protected from any dirt or stains.
c) In emergency case when the client needs to use the slabs prematurely,
the client should cover the Artevia slabs with overlapping plastic
sheets, on which a 10cm layer of sand is placed. But by all means this
should not occur before 3 days of the placement of the slabs.

Decorative concrete –
Guidelines for curing
and sealing
Making the choice of decorative concrete is judicious but also an investment. Like any
finished surface, concrete needs to be protected and maintained to preserve its beauty
from day one to years into the future!
Proper curing and sealing are the most important and often the most neglected aspects
of quality decorative concrete construction. When properly protected and cared for,
integral color concrete will retain its color indefinitely. Decorative concrete demands slight
differences in placement and curing compared to standard concrete. These differences
are no more difficult, just slightly different to ensure the desired finish and appearance.

Curing
What is it? Why cure?
Curing is the surface treatment of the newly placed concrete during the period in which
it is hardening so that it retains enough moisture to assist the chemical reaction called
hydration.
The fresh concrete contains enough water to allow the cement to hydrate and to allow
the concrete to be placed easily. However, if the excess water evaporates too quickly
on the surface because the concrete is not protected against evaporation, the hydration
process can be delayed or even prevented resulting in a poor finish.
Curing has a major impact on the quality of the finished work. The proper hydration of
the cement on the surface will give the concrete what it needs to gain strength properly,
to minimize shrinkage and cracking, and to have the durability required to resist scaling
caused by deicing salts. In fact, curing is so essential to installing decorative concrete
correctly because the result of water evaporation is more noticeable on colored concrete
surfaces than traditional concrete making decorative surfaces look faded or lighter in color
when not cleaned off. Properly cured decorative concrete is stronger, more durable and
more water tight.

Clear curing is the most common and also recommended on projects
that incorporate multiple colors. White pigmented compounds are
recommended for use on hot, sunny days because their reflective

The most common and practical way to cure colored concrete is to

What maintenance is required of decorative concrete?
Because the life expectancy of a sealer depends, in part, on exposure conditions and
how well the sealer is maintained, it’s important to select a sealer that will protect your
decorative concrete from the traffic conditions and elements to which it will be exposed.
Proper maintenance includes reapplying the sealer on a regular basis depending on how
the concrete is used. A home patio or pool deck might require another coat every two years
while a more heavily traveled surface might require a new coat of sealer more often. Exterior
surfaces need to be power-washed and interior floors need to be cleaned prior to resealing
the surface. Again, the sealer needs to be applied on a clean, dry concrete with a surface
temperature of no less than 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the concrete is clean and dry, the
sealer can be spayed or rolled on the surface concrete. If a pump sprayer is used, it must
be designed for this kind of product. Ordinary garden-type sprayers are not recommended.
Exterior and interior concrete surfaces may receive several thin coats of sealer.

Compatibility
To avoid incompatibility problems, we suggest using the same product used initially; if a
cure and seal was first applied, a product by the same manufacturer is recommended.

Where do I find sealer?

Most home improvement stores and construction supply retailers supply many different
sealers and can assist in selecting the best product. Several suppliers offer high quality
sealers like Grace, BASF, Euclid, Dayton.
The coverage rates for sealers are calculated by square footage and will vary if the product
is applied as a first coat or a second coat.

Artevia Joints Guide

Warning: The following limits and recommendations, and details are only
applicable for Artevia decorative concrete range manufactured by Lafarge,as
typical constrains have been considered in the Artevia design of concrete
mixtures, and it may not be compatible for any other concrete types.
Artevia Joints are used in to limit the frequency and width of random cracks
caused by volume changes and to reduce the magnitude of slab curling.
Normally, the layout of joints and joint details are provided by the designer.
Such layouts should comply with Lafarge standards elaborated herein. If the
joint layout is not provided, Lafarge/applicator submits a detailed joint
layout and placing sequence for approval of the designer before proceeding.

As stated in ACI 360R, every effort should be made to isolate the slab from
restraint that might be provided by any other element of the structure.
Restraint from any source, whether internal or external, will increase the
potential for random cracking.
Three types of Artevia joints are commonly used in concrete slabs on-
ground: isolation joints, contraction joints, and construction joints (Please
refer to figure 1).

Figure 1: Slabs on Grade Types of Joints

Readymix Gulf LLC
A Member of Holcim

Artevia Contraction joints:

Should be provided in the Artevia slab to accommodate shrinkage and to

relieve internal stresses, it should allow horizontal movement.

1. Artevia contraction joints are normally sawn using the narrowest

blade practical (3 to 7mm).
2. Artevia contraction joints should be provided at areas where
differences in subgrade and slab support may cause cracks, such as
above large underground utility trenches.
3. Artevia fiber reinforced range recommendations, ratios of the long to
short side to be between 1.25 and 1.5, by all means should not
exceed 2.
4. Odd shapes should be avoided, but if they cannot be avoided, re-
entrant corners should be reinforced to limit the cracking at these
locations.
5. Contraction joints should be provided at 24 to 36 times the slab
thickness in both directions up to a maximum spacing of 5.5 m, and it
is recommended that joint spacing not exceed 4.5 m when load
transfer depends on aggregate interlock.
6. For relatively high-slump Artevia concrete with the maximum
aggregate size less than (20 mm), spacing should be at the low end of
the above range. Greater spacing can be used for low-slump concrete
with larger aggregate.
7. For the Artevia slabs, the contraction joints are usually sawed in the
sequence as the slab was cast. However, hot weather, winds or other
special conditions affecting shrinkage may dictate the sequence of
sawing.
8. In some critical cases, Hand-tooled or preformed joints are required.
These are done by hand-tooling to the required depth, or by inserting
plastic or hardboard strips into the concrete before finishing.
9. Subgrade support is very important in contraction joint effectiveness.
Soils such as some silts and clays have low support values, and
repetitive loadings will cause a loss of aggregate interlock faster than
for slabs supported on sandy soils. Crushed aggregate is more effective
in transferring load than natural gravel, and coarse aggregateis more
effective than fine aggregate.
10.Artevia contraction joints should be continuous, not staggered or
offset; L and T panels and sections should be avoided.
11.For heavily loaded slabs with a high percentage of reinforcement for
loads and crack control, contraction joints may be opened up too
much for adequate load transfer through aggregate interlock. Load
transfer at these joints can be accomplished with dowels. A
combination of shear and bending action by the dowels will allow for
load transfer between slabs.

12.To permit horizontal movement,

the dowels must not bond to the
concrete on at least one side of
the joint. Only smooth bars
should be used (Please refer to
figure 2).

Expansion or Isolation Joints

The purpose of isolation joints in slabs on grade is to allow horizontal and

vertical movement between the slab and adjoining structures such as
walls, columns, footings, or especially loaded areas (i.e., machinery
bases).

1. Artevia isolation joints should be used wherever complete freedom of

vertical and horizontal movement is required between the floor and
adjoining building members. Isolation joints should be used at
junctions with walls (not requiring lateral restraint from the slab),
columns, equipment foundations, footings, or other points of restraint
such as drains, manholes, sumps, and stairways. Isolation joints are
formed by inserting preformed joint filler
2. Artevia isolation joints in slabs on grade also may be expansion joints.
However, the expansion of concrete slabs on grade is generally less
than the initial shrinkage, and provision for expansion is seldom
required.
3. Isolation joints can be formed with preformed fiberboard,
polyethylene foam, or similar materials before concrete placement
begins.
4. A circular joint avoids re-entrant corners where stress concentrations
may occur. Square isolation joints at columns are usually rotated
(forming a diamond shape). If the square pattern is not rotated, radial
cracks may propagate from the corners. If this layout is used,
additional reinforcing is needed at corners to restrain crack
development, for typical isolation joint details around column, against
walls and equipment footings please refer to the figure 4,5 and 6).

Construction joints

Construction joints are placed in the slab where the concreting operations
are terminated.

5. The construction joint type and layout should be determined before

concrete placement, so that it will coincide with the isolation and
contraction joints. Construction joints can coincide with contraction
joints. These joints could then be keyed and dowelled joints
discussed earlier.

6. Bonded construction joints should be used if the concreting

operations are interrupted long enough to permit the concrete to
harden. A bonded construction joint with tie bars crossing the joint to
limit joint opening is adequate for an unreinforced slab-on-grade. PCA
recommends the use of 750 mm long tie bars, spaced at 750 mm.
These should be 13 mm bars for slabs 125 to 200 mm thick and 16
mm for 225 and 250 mm slabs.
7. Butt joints could be used when construction joints do not coincide
with isolation or contraction joints, butt joints may be used in thin,
lightly loaded slabs. Load transfer is not a major factor in the design.
Otherwise, dowels or thickened slab ends could be used.

8. Formed construction joints should be similarly sawn but to a depth of

only 25 mm
