*It is musical genre that originated in African American gospel singing, it is closely related to rhythm and blues
or RnB, and is characterized by the intensity of feeling and vocal embellishments.
*It developed in the USA in the late 1950s from an African American church music called "gospel music”.
While soul music genre has a lot in common with R&B musical genre, its differences is that it includes its use of
gospel-music devices, its greater emphasis on vocalists, and its merging of religious and secular themes.
*Soul music traces its roots to traditional blues and the gospel music of the Black church.
How did soul music come to be?
*Soul music was the result of the urbanization and commercialization of rhythm and blues in the '60s .
When and why did the soul music begun to splinter?
*By 1968, the soul music genre had begun to splinter. Some soul artists developed funk music, while other singers and
groups developed slicker, more sophisticated, and in some cases more politically conscious varieties.
Call and Response-Soul music features a heavy call and response routine.
Repetition -This plays a major role in soul music. In the soul music genre, its not uncommon to hear the same musical
notes, phrases and rhythms throughout a song.
Instrumentation-Soul music infuses a wide variety of instruments together, such as the piano, drums, and the guitar.
Borrowing elements from African-American gospel, jazz, and R&B, soul music was integral to American life in the 50s
and 60s and is still a worldwide wonder until today.
Soul pioneers of the 1950s are Ray Charles, Etta James, Sam Cooke, Clyde McPhatter, Little Richard, and Hank Ballard
they learned music through performing in gospel groups.
