HELLO

COMPONENTS OF A LAB REPORT

PAGE 1: This contains your personal details and summary details of the
experiment done.

o Your name, registration number, student number and signature

o Date of the experiment

o Number of the experiment

o Title of the experiment

o Aim (s) of the experiment

Note: Title of the experiment - This should capture the essence of the work
being reported. Be specific.

Aim/Purpose of the experiment - What is your goal for that particular

experiment?

PAGE 2: ABSTRACT -This is a summary of the entire report from the aim of
the experiment to the conclusion. It should be just enough to inform the lecturer
of all key details of your report even when they don’t read through the rest of
the report.

OTHER PAGES:

1. Theory of the experiment/Introduction -This should summarise all

details one needs to know prior to the experiment and explain the essence
of the experiment generally and in depth. The various key terms should
be clearly defined, examples stated, illustrations made (if any), necessary
equations written and any other important information deemed necessary
for that particular experiment.

2. Procedure -Outline of the procedure. A paragraph or two summarizing

the important parts from the lab manual. This should not be word for
word but rather enough information that someone else could replicate
your results. This includes the actual measurements performed in the lab

(if the manual says to weigh 0.1 g and you weighed 0.1103 g, you should
report here that you measured 0.1103 g).

3. Results - Results should clearly be recorded, most preferably in tables.

(For your lab journals, it is advisable to make data tables in your lab
notebook before coming to the lab, as they will make it simpler when you
enter the data you collect).

4. Calculations/Treatment of results -Make necessary step by step

calculations to manipulate your experimentally obtained data carefully
since this is the basis for all your discussion and conclusions to check
whether the aim of the experiment has been achieved. (Record the key
steps of your calculations and the final answers in your lab journal to
quickly refer to them in the future).

5. Discussion - Analyze your data in the context of the purpose of the

experiment .Quantify how well your computed/measured values compare
to literature (this includes statistical analysis such as percent error and
standard deviation).

Ø Sources of errors -Include discussions on possible sources of error in

the execution of the experiment and how they might have affected the
outcome.

Ø Recommendations How might they be avoided in the future?

Recommend for each error you mentioned

Ø Figures - These can be included in the discussion to emphasize concepts

being discussed.

6. Conclusions - State the main findings of the experiment, and relate them to
the purpose in the introduction. Concisely summarize your work.

7. References - These refer to text books or websites you referred to for

information while writing your lab report. If you used text books, you should
clearly quote the text book used as follows:

Author (year of publication)>Title of the book and edition>name of

publisher>city of publication>page numbers you read
